This is a great pant that does it's job. It keeps me dry in whatever the conditions I'm in. The velcro around the cuffs keep them over my boot, and the drawcord around the waist holds them where the need to be. The only issue is that I have them in the tan/biege color, and they got a bit dirty, but I've not noticed a change in performance. Great value for the price!

I'm a 30-31 waist, would a medium be too big?

No. I'd go for the medium, depending on your height. Looks like some customers are feeling like the medium was snug for a 32 waist. I wear a large in this pant and I'm a 33 waist.

Bought these pants on sale. I am usually a medium, but after reading reviews, I went with the large. They fit right, leaving room for layering. I tried them on, they seem to breathe well. They are light weight and compact really small. I want to use them for summer backpacking trips. I think they will do the job, but I have yet to take them out. So, so far so good...

I didn't even keep these for more than 5 minutes. I stepped into these pants and instantly felt clammy. Size up, because they are really tight. I'm a 31-32 and the medium was too tight. I regrettably own the jacket version of these pants . I wore the Jacket torrent shell in several storms and it bled through in the shoulders

Patagonia torrent pant- I planto wear it over khakis or jeans. My size is 34 waist, 32 inseam. Should I upsize to large size or stick to medium.

Large would be the best option for your size and the relatively bulky pants you want to wear them over. Good luck!

Needed to not get sludged on in rainstorms when hiking, these pants are waterproof. Simple, basic, lightweight, functional. The zips at the bottom allows to get them on and off quickly with boots. velcro and drawstring to keep them up.
Great buy

They will be a little long, but the cuffs are narrow enough that they shouldn't slide down over most hiking shoes/boots.

I plan on wearing these over jeans or mountain khakis. Should I size up to a large? My jean size is 32 waist, 33 inseam.

Dan, I think you will still be ok with the mediums.

Can leg length be shortened. I am a 33 waist but a 27 inseam.

Jim,
You'd have to have a pretty skilled seamstress, but the Torrentshell Pants could most likely be shortened. There's an 8 inch zip at the cuff which might be tricky, but I've heard of people having just about any pant in the Patagonia line hemmed.

Jim, probably too late for my answer but.....I'm short too, what I have done with pants of this type is to "hem" them not at the end of the pant but double it up around the thigh/calf area (ie create a fold in the material and have it sewn down)

The Torrentshell pant is perfect for carrying in a pack, along with the jacket of course. The jacket and pants weigh so little and crunch down into such a tiny bundle that there's loads of room for everything else you might want to carry. Both garments do their job, that is preventing you from getting soaked in the rain. They are not for keeping warm as there is no insulation, so think under-layers when using the Torrentshell system. Quality is first rate as you would expect form Patagonia.
I've tried the pant both with and without regular pant underneath and it works well both ways.

nice pants. good tough, quality. i dont wear them too much because they are too hot when hiking in moderate temps, but i almost always pack them with me just in case. ripstop nylon is indeed just that... pretty light weight. warm. pack small and compress pretty well. elastic waist with drawcord and elastic. velcro on the ankles. i am a 34" waist with 32" inseam. got the large, they fit well enough considering i dont wear them too often. gore-tex is better, but for the price you cant beat them. these are warmer than my mountain hardwear epic pants.

These rain pants are great. Matched with the torrentshell jacket I stayed completely dry during some pretty heavy rains.

I'm a Gore Tex fan, but at $62, I took a chance and bought these Patagonia pants. They fit fantastic, not baggy at all, and good range of motion. Lightweight and packs small. And they look good!
I wore them to a Formula 1 race in Montreal and it rained hard for over 2 hours and I was dry as toast!
They were long enough to go over my boots as I sat in the bleachers, so my feet stayed dry.

There's no description of how the sizes run w/resepdct to waist size and length. If I wear pants that are 38waist and 31 length, what size rain pants should I get?
Eli Hauschild

To the right under the price, and right under where you 'Select Options", you can click 'Size?' which has the waist and inseam size chart. It looks like you are a size L or XL, both which may be a little long in the inseam.
What's the inseam for the large?

Typical Patagonia quality for these rain pants. Features elastic waist with a drawstring, velcro closures on the hems and a great feature, zippers to allow easy on/off over boots. Waterproof, breathable and durable. I keep these in my pack for sudden storms.
Fit is true to size, I have a 33 inch waist and the Mediums fit perfect.

Got this to go with the Patagonia Torrentshell jacket, and it keeps you dry as can be. Not super warm, but thats not really what its for. Good fit and the zippers at the cuffs allow you to pull it over and off of your hiking boots.
