    Beware of H2No

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit:True to size

I have owned this rain jacket for 4 years and have very mixed feelings about it. Although there are many features that I love in this jacket, it is not as waterproof as I expected it to be when I first purchased it.
H2No is not effective in anything more than a light drizzle. My layers have gotten soaked through while wearing this jacket and the inside material always feels damp and clammy when I take it off. I had two friends who took the same jacket on the John Muir Train this summer who were just as disappointed as I after we got caught in a few rain storms. There are many things I love about this jacket including its fit (with or without layers) and how compactible it can be when I'm short on room. I ha™ve also used it ski touring in good conditions and have appreciated the pit zips and lightweight feel (compared to my bulkier Gore-Tex ski jacket).
If you are looking for a jacket that will "do it all" I would advise considering something that can hold up better in a storm. However, if you are looking for a simple shell for day-to-day use in a wet climate or a windbreaker for fair-weathered adventures, I would definitely recommend this jacket.

    Best rain jacket I've owned

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium

This rain jacket is the most protective rain jacket I've owned. I ordered a medium but should have ordered a small-past reviews were misleading. I decided to keep it anyway as its not a fashion statement, it's a functional statement. Used it up in the Boundary Waters between Canada and Minnesota. Works like a charm!

    Best rain jacket I've owned

    A great shell!

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

This shell is awesome. I bought it for those rainy Seattle days and it keeps me perfectly dry. The ventilation is on point too. I would highly recommend this jacket as a basic rain coat to keep you dry through those wet seasons.

    Stellar jacket

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: Extra small

Absolutely love this jacket. I have wanted a Patagonia Torrentshell for years and finally got one this year. Definitely have been impressed! Lightweight, yet totally waterproof, this jacket will get you through the wettest of conditions. I haven't been able to wear it as much as I would like to yet because I live in drought-burdened California, but this summer has seen the occasional thunderstorm and I stayed dry throughout. Planning on taking this jacket to the UK where I know it will come in handy!
I'm 5'2" 110 lbs and the XS fits perfectly with room underneath to layer. I originally purchased the Mayan Yellow color which turned out to be a lot more neon green in person, so I exchanged it for the Curaçao color. The blue Curaçao is awesome - still bright enough to be seen in a storm, but you won't be confused for a construction worker. You won't be disappointed!

    keeps me dry

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: small

It's a rain shell and it works! It's definitely a slimmer fit through the hips so the bottom of the jacket will fit close to your hips if you are more of a pear shape.

    Go with your normal size!

    • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
    • Fit:Runs large
    • Size Bought: med

    Hey all-
my normal size is small. I have a north face hyvent small rain jacket- but its a little snug with a hoodie underneath. So on this jacket u pucked medium.......... wrong. The sleeves went over my fingertips and its waist was 4" lower than mine.
So- go with what you usually wear and itll turn out just fine. Cant wait to get the smaller one back so I can rock it all over the PNW!
    Cheers mates! -A

    • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
    • Size Bought: medium

Love the color (Mayan Yellow-great on a dreary rainy day) and the quality as well as the style. Sadly, it is too snug across the bottom hem/hips.
Note to manufacturer: Not only widen the hip area but put in a two way zipper so it doesn't bunch up when you sit in the car.

3 stars till it goes thru a storm

Bough this for my GF as a surprise and the fit is true to size with the sleeves just a little long, 1-2 inches. She is 5'2. The fit is good but might be tight with a hoodie underneath. Will update after it rains on her face :)

      Love this jacket

      • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit:True to size

Been using this jacket for over a year in New England and regardless of conditions my upper body is always dry, even if the rest of my outfit has failed me and I'm soaked everywhere else. I primarily got this jacket to use to block wind/rain/snow during my bicycle commute and have zero complaints. I exclusively used this jacket during Boston's snowpocalpse and clearly have lived to tell the tale.

It's proven to be durable, easy and convenient to pack down, fit my giant head, fit well w/o being shapeless, and low maintenance. DWR is going strong despite many washings.

Only complaint is that I can't get spots of bike grease off the shell, but let's be real, that's my fault.

      The Scotland bomber

      • Fit:True to size
      • Size Bought: small

Took this jacket for a trip thru the highlands of Scotland in April, and I was not dissappointed. Performed perfectly in a mirad of conditions, not just torrential rain (see what i did there......) on the lochs, but effing blizzards at the top of Ben Lomond and Ben Nevis. Packs up small for easy transport, 'cause let's face it, it's Scotland, and the weather sucks 75% of the time. I bought this in a SM. It fit big enough that layering underneath was quite comfortable (usually 2 layers -again, Scotland). Had good shoulder mobility, and long sleeves and wide enough cuffs to get a good sized glove underneath.

      Nice long fit!

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times
      • Fit:True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I wore this jacket through some light (non-backpacking) travel in Canada and Alaska - and it did great! It kept me dry the whole time even in misty conditions that lasted all day.

I am 5'4" and usually wear a small comfortably, but this time got the medium based on other reviews. It's not too large can fit a few layers underneath since it is a thin jacket. The long fit is also very flattering.

I agree that the white inside might not last long, but it otherwise seems like a very durable jacket. I'm looking forward to using it for a long time!

Very cute, but a little too light

I got this jacket for fly fishing. The inside of the jacket was very white and I don't know how long I would be able to keep it that way. Especially around my face. I was worried I would have makeup on the collar forever after one wear...I know its silly to wear makeup on the river, but come on, I am still a girl. I am looking for something with a different feel as well. It felt a little too light for what I want to use it for. But everything fit true to size and looked great.

      Keeps me dry!

The day my jacket arrived we had the biggest rain storm in ages. Kept me dry biking to/from work. Love the adjustable hood and vent. Great color (Mayan Yellow) helps me to be seen while out and about.

      Holds up to the rain!

      • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I bought this jacket as a Christmas gift for my mom for our trip to Patagonia (Torres del Paine), and we ended up squabbling over who got to use it! It kept us dry during through the famous shifting Patagonia weather, where one minute it was abundant sunshine and the next it would be absolutely pouring with huge gusts of wind. It was roomy enough to wear a light fleece under. It is not quite as durable as a GoreTex jacket, but it holds up well and keeps you dry.

I loved the color of the jacket , the blue, but the fit has changed. It is longer and the body fits differently. I have a black one of the previous generation that I really liked. I am 5'3" 120 lbs. I have not really changed in measurements. I am returning it because the fit is unflattering on me.

      Tyrian Lavender...not purple.

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times
      • Fit:True to size

      I love this jacket! But....
The only complaint I have is that when I ordered the Tyrian Purple it was not as dark as pictured here. When I received it, it was more of a light lavender color. For this reason I returned it for a different color.

      Disappointed

      • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

This review may be all preferential, but I unfortunately disliked this jacket although I love the Patagonia brand. What I disliked the most was the material. It felt very stiff and uncomfortable on bare skin because of plastic feel which can cause sweat. The fit of the jacket was off for me: ran too large and not flattering on my shape. The cuffs where too large, even with the adjusters. I usually purchase all of my clothing in a small and at times medium, and in this case for this jacket, I would have needed an extra small.

I ended up returning this jacket and went with the Mountain Hardware Banning rain jacket.

Can this jacket be used for snowboarding with baselayers?

ordered from BC two weeks ago and now my package is being held somewhere in phx. why havent i received my package? and is there a reason i cant update my shipping address? maybe thats why but now how do i get my package i paid for already!?

I am studying abroad this coming spring in Ireland and I am looking for a jacket that will be able to keep me warm, dry, and will pack easily. Would this be a good fit? Thanks in advance!

I am looking to purchase the torrentshell jacket for my girlfriend, but I am curious about the sizing. She typically wears a Medium in everything, rain jackets included. Two years ago I bought her the Patagonia Torrentshell Trench Coat (although slightly different than what is currently shown here: http://www.backcountry.com/patagonia-torrentshell-trench-coat-womens) and she had to go with the Large, mainly because it was a bit too snug in the shoulders.

Would I be safe in assuming that the regular torrentshell jacket is sized similar to the trenchcoat, meaning that I should also purchase the jacket in a large?

      Thank you.

I just want to follow up here, as the OP. I ordered the large for my girlfriend, and she was swimming in it. She could have worn a few jackets underneath, and rolled the sleeves up several times. I ordered the medium and it fits very well solo, or with a medium weight layer underneath. She does not need much more for the mild winters of Western Washington.

I'm 5'9 135 lbs but I feel like my arms are pretty long.... I usually fit s/m. Should I go with a medium? I want to be able to wear a down jacket underneath if needed.

I'm 5'8" and 130 lbs and can't decide between a small and medium! I'm from Oregon where it's not super cold, so I don't want it to be bulky with just a T underneath BUT I do want to fit a sweatshirt underneath for those colder days. Suggestions??

      Hey Zoie,

You would best suited with a Medium in the Patagonia Torrentshell., especially if you want to layer something like a sweatshirt underneath. My fiancee is 5'7", 125 lbs. and she wears a Medium in most Patagonia Jackets.

How long are the sleeves? I'm 5'11" and always have issues with the sleeves and body being long enough.

I 6'2" with a wingspan slightly longer than that. Buying my normal size jacket, the sleeves were long enough and then there is a velcro cuff to tighten it up if you need to keep it from getting in the way. Hope that helps a little. You can also get with one of the gearheads on chat and have them send someone to measure a specific size for you.

I'm 5'7", 125#, 34 chest, AND long waisted. Would you guys suggest small or medium?

      Hey Laurie,

Sounds like you need the small! Medium will give you an extra inch in length, but you would really need to layer up to fill that extra volume.

Scroll down and you'll see that Laura LaBar (Backcountry Gearhead) and several customers have provided some helpful measurements and respective sizes! I agree with Geoff Conner's response - go with chest measurement. Sounds like you are at the lower range of a small so I think you might be swimming in a medium. Hopefully that helps!

I am 5'7" and weigh 140lb, I usually wear a size 4 or a small in tops and size 6 in pants. I am debating whether a small or a medium would fit best for me in this jacket, and I would like to be able to layer it. Could you recommend what size would be best?

      Hey Heather,

Patagonia recommends a a size S for a size 4-6. However, for the best fit, I would recommend going of the chest measurements. A size S is going to fit a 34-35 in chest and a size M is going to fit a 36-37 in chest. If you have any more questions about this jacket or any other gear, please give me a call at 1-800-409-4502 ext 4446 or email at gconner@backcountry.com

I am trying to decide between a medium and large in this jacket, I am 5'10" and weigh 150lbs. I don't want it too tight that I couldn't wear a fleece under it too though. Any thoughts?

      Best Answer

Hey Erin, I would order that in Large so that you have enough room to layer underneath it. My shell personally runs more narrow through the hips so I find even if I don't have anything layered underneath the jacket it isn't too bulky. A really great measurement to go off of when jacket shopping online is your chest measurement. You'll want to measure around the fullest part of your bust and compare that measurement to the 'Chest' measurement on the Patagonia sizing chart, that way you know you are snagging a size that will fit around your chest (woman problems)

      I hope that helps!

Is this jacket bulky and heavy? I need a jacket for Ireland in March this year, but I don't want it to be bulky and heavy and in the way but I do want the jacket to protect me against rain, windy and be comfortable when I am walking everywhere.
