I bought these shorts in 2013 and have wore them almost every day of every summer since. These ARE the shorts you're looking for. I'm 6 feet tall and bought the 5 inch for a couple of reasons. 1) I have great legs 2) going commando with the 5 inch inseam means you get steady airflow up there all day. Swear to god it keeps you at LEAST 10 degrees cooler 3) This isn't AND1 mixtape vol.22, shorts are supposed to be short otherwise we'd call them shants. These shorts are extremely durable. I've used them for climbing, hiking, swimming and picking up women. I get compliments every time I wear them and guess what? All the compliments are from women. It doesn't matter what your male friends think. As you walk through Whole Foods on your way to buy quinoa and kombucha, people's heads will turn as they admire your confidence and physique. Do your love life a favor and buy these shorts.

I've tried lots of shorts from many places and these are always THE BEST. Patagonia products are not cheap but last for years and years.

7" is the perfect length for me. Hit just above my knee at 6'1". Super comfortable and durable fabric. Doesnt wrinkle too easily.

Stand up indeed

Had these shorts for nine years now and aside from the Velcro coming loose recently, these are my go to shorts. Love the deep back pockets, perfect for dropping my phone and wallet and easy enough to reach down into. Comfortable, breathable and time tested. Testament to good design and quality. Time for a new pair...

Not the same....

Granted is has been many years since I bought my last pair of Stand Up shorts from Patagonia, but I was truly disappointed to see the huge change in fabric. Yes it is organic cotton, but I was more concerned about getting that heavy, tough, rugged, long lasting fabric same as the vintage stand up shorts in my dresser. Again, I understand things change with time, but in my opinion, this was not a change for the better. Would not buy these again!

I have thrown out all other shorts

I guess I am just adding to a perfect review line up here, but I have to make my case. First off, I am a short, stocky guy (imagine rugby player build). Suffice to say, I am not a fan of the long shorts movement. I like short with a 7" inseam. I first bought the standup shorts in a 5" inseam but it's really too short. The 7" is perfect. The shorts feel like they could take a direct grenade hit. The material is really sturdy. Also, love love love the pockets. All pockets two main front, two main rear (with a separate wallet pocket) are deep (like to the bottom of the shorts). I've bought like 8 pairs of these shorts in different colors and basically thrown out all of my other shorts.

what is the difference between the 5" and...

what is the difference between the 5" and 7" shorts? is that the inseam?

Responded on

Hey Brel,

You are correct, the 5 and 7 reference the inseam of the shorts. I will see if I can bribe one of our content guys to get that added to the tech specs.

What's not to love

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love the Patagonia Stand Up short so much I own about 6 pairs and they are my go to casual shorts in the summer months. I bought the 5 inch inseam 'cause I've got short (29 inch inseam) legs and feel like the 7 inch inseam looks too long on me. Admittedly, the 5 inch inseam on these shorts seems even shorter sometimes (like when I sit down), because the material is so stiff that it sort of pulls up (or back) when I sit. I feel a little extra exposed in those moments, but not enough to stop wearing them.

I love how thick the material is (they really keep their shape), and I love the deep pockets - particularly in the back. Generally, when I wash them I let them air dry rather than putting them through the dryer (for some reason I think this keeps them stiffer, but that maybe is just me). Can't go wrong with these shorts.

Wear'em casual, wear'em technical

I have had these shorts for about a month now and they have been very multipurpose. They look nice and presentable when you aren't climbing or trotting down a trail, but it has enough flex to allow for that too.

Killer shorts!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Look like your old-school dirtbag heroes with these canvas short shorts!
They looked goofy with my chicken legs at first, but I've grown to love these shorts over the years.

I love the functionality of these things. Lots deep pockets, and generous leg openings to allow for climbing/high stepping.
The fabric is super tough cotton canvas, and should definitely last you a few seasons.

Let the sun shine a little on those pale legs of yours with these 7 inch wonders. Make sure you're wearing some briefs though...

The best

These are my go to shorts during the summer. They are very durable, and fit comfortably. I'm on my second pair of shorts (still use first pair from many years ago, but the color faded). If you want something that will last a while, these shorts are perfect.

Good old fashioned shorts

Had a pair of these 25 years ago and wondered how the changes might have affected them. After a few weeks of steady use, I really appreciate the new wallet pocket and the fabric is great. These are dependable, comfortable and tough shorts that you won't be disappointed in. I like the length- not too long like so many shorts these days. When you hike or clib stairs the bottom of the short isn't bunched on top of your knee. Great product that will last.

Talked into them

So when Pata had their 50% off sale a month or so back, I went to order the duck shorts. The girl on the phone told me they were out of stock, and my heart sank. She recommended these, and I asked if I'd love them as much as the duck shorts. She said yes, and I took her word for it. Long story short I'm quite glad that I made the purchase because these things rock. My jealous friends make fun of my legs, as the shorts are a little short. They're super durable, but not heavy like carhartt. They're reasonably quick drying, but not like swimtrunks. All around they are my go to shorts. I love being able to climb in em all day, and then head to the pub for a couple beers and not have to change shorts.

The dirt color serves well...

...to hide the effects of occasional scooting on one's butt, as does the double seat.

THE shorts

Never have I had a pair of shorts I love more than these. Nothing beats them for comfort, practicality, durability, and dirtbag style. The color faded pretty fast on mine, but they might just be sun bleached. Price may seem a little much at first, but you'll wear them for years to come.

Take some getting used to but now my Favorite

Ok so let me first say that I originally bought these out of curiosity as many of my friends had them. They are SHORT...but that being said...I have never had a more comfortable, easy to hike in, durable, and just overall great. The shortness allows for a wide range of movement and keeps you cool down below. They are a thick duck material but its not so thick that it becomes hot. The pockets are a little weird at first but the big back pockets are easy to stick larger items in and the wallet pocket still feels good. Plus the big back pockets are loved by the ladies hands...dont ask me why but apparently they call out to them...I dont get it but I am certainly not complaining. These hold up great and are a great short for hot summer weather hiking or just around town.
