i am 5'5@ 125lbs, and bought these bottoms in the medium - perfect fit, with no muffin top, but still tight enough to not float off when high tide rolls in.

I am 5'7" 118 lbs, ordered the small and they fit perfect. Good coverage and look super cute.

I ordered these bottoms last spring along with the Patagonia Kupala top. I loved the fit of the top (Med.), very sporty, with a criss-cross back, that keep my girls (34C) in place in every situation. But the bottoms... the cut across the waist was tight enough to give me a muffin top (!) while the seat etc. fit just fine, that was in a medium size. So I returned that one and ordered a large thinking that surely would do the trick (I'm 5'7 and 140Lb.). Again same problem with a unproportioned, tight, waistband. Okay, at this point I love my matching top and am willing to size up one more time for the matching bottoms. So I order and XL. The waist is still slightly tighter than I would like, I understand these are supposed to be sporty bottoms and that you want them to stay put but come on! P.S. I still love you Patagonia, forgive me for the bad review!
