    All together now.

Made for wintertime activities ranging from backcountry skiing to mountaineering to ice climbing, the Patagonia Simul Men's Alpine Softshell Pant is a lightweight, breathable, do-it-all workhorse that you'll want to pull on pretty much every morning. While the polyester softshell fabric gives you plenty of stretch and breathability, the articulated cut and gusseted crotch add an even greater degree of flexibility, and the narrower lower leg and adjustable cuffs keep your pants out of the way when you're skinning, front pointing, or glacier walking. Patagonia hooked the Simul up with a water-repellent DWR coating to help you stay dry and also built in its OppoSet waist adjustment, so you'll never have to worry about your pants falling down when you're making some tenuous ice moves or skintrack kick turns.

    Awesome multi-use softshells

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 36

Was looking for a pair of soft shell pants to bridge the seasonal gap - light/breathable enough for fall hiking, and warm and weather resistant enough for ice climbing. These were on sale so I figured I'd give them a try and they are perfect. Couldn't have asked for anything different. Except one thing.

When deciding to purchase these I read a review that said the thigh pocket zipper jingled at which point I thought to myself "lol what a picky consumer" and bought the pants. Then I put them on and started walking out of my house and heard the jingle. I don't know how such a small zipper can make as much noise as it does. I just laughed to myself and put a piece of tape over the zipper and it's all good now.

Love these pants and would recommend anytime!

    Awesome multi-use softshells

    Built-in Bear Bell

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 32

When I say built-in bear bell I'm exaggerating. But the thigh zipper has a metal tab that jingles enough to bother someone who tries to stay away from noisy gear in the quiet backcountry or wind-less alpine. That was enough for me to pass on this pant.

    Great pants

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are my go to ice climbing pants. Great mobility, breathability, and durability, everything a good pair of ice climbing pants should be. Basically lived in them for 4 days while climbing in Ouray, Co, used them at least 2-3 times a week for early morning ice climbs up Scruffy and GWI this season and i've yet to see any signs of wear. Pockets work well with a harness, and the waist adjustment provides just enough wiggle room to really narrow the size to just how you like it. Great overall pants!

    Awesome Pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 36

These are great pants. I've only used them in the summer and spring months but I've used them quite a bit in that time frame. I've used them mostly for cool to warm weather mountaineering trips in the sierras and have stood up to most everything I've thrown at them within reason (crampon spikes obviously don't count). They also work for climbing as they stretch a lot and offer great mobility. They breath well for they're weight and I am able to manage my body temperature pretty well. They do get warm when the temperatures are higish(like >75) but that's expected. The opposet belt works great to as I dropped a size or two but they still cinch down to fit pretty good across about 3 sizes. They're also great for off the mountain as they are reasonably fashionable and not too techy. Overall these are awesome and I am probably going to buy at least 1 hopefully 2 more pairs.

    Great fit and very durable.

These pants met all of my expectations and more. I was climbing some gritty gneiss this past weekend and the pants didn't pull or tear in the least which I cannot say for anyother pant I have ever worn. The length is a bit longer than I was hoping for (I'm 6'1'' 165 lbs). I was in the same camp with everyone else about the OppoSet belt thing being nothing more than a gimick but I actually use it ever time I put the pants on and it has been great. Worn the pants 24 days (not in a row) and haven't had to wash them yet. Only complaint is when the main pockets aren't zippered up they tend to scrunch, especially with a harness on. Not a big deal but a draw back that I noticed. Over all great pant, psyched on these!

    Unanswered Question

Are these ever available with different inseam lengths? According to the size chart, a 36 waist will have a 33-inch inseam. 31 inches is about right for me. I can sometime live with 32, but 33 is going to be too long.

How do these SIMUL pants compare to the Alpine Guide Pants version? Im 6'3 and 33-34 waist. Which would be better for alpine- and higher-altitude trekking (not full climbing). Thanks!

    Best Answer

These pants use a tight polyester weave with DWR coating, meaning that they are breathable and water resistant, but lightweight with not a lot of wind protection. The Alpine Guide pants use a Polartec fabric that is slightly heavier and adds windproofness. What works best depends on your usage; I would wear the Alpine Guide on its own, but would wear another layer beneath the SIMUL pants if I were to use them.

Do these pants fit over ski boots?
