Description

From spring corn skiing to summer backpacking to autumn climbs, this pant does it all.

Slip into the Patagonia Women’s Simple Guide Softshell Pant and follow your heart into the mountains. The Simple Guide’s recycled materials help the planet you live to explore. This stretchy pant’s DWR finish beads moisture and sheds snowflakes on your approach, be it a skin track or rocky trail. Halfway up the mountain, the Simple Guide lets perspiration evaporate away from your legs and wicks away the sweat that would otherwise freeze you on the ridgeline. If a climbing harness or scrambly moves are in your future, the pant's shaped knees and gusseted crotch will play right along.

World travelers rejoice!

  • Gender: Female

These pants are the perfect weight, length, and fabric for probably most things you do year round. I took these pants on a two week trip to East Asia and the Arabian Peninsula and they stood the heat and kept me protected from the elements. I was initially worried about overheating in them, but that never happened. They were quick to dry overnight when I washed them in a sink and and there was no stretching out like some fabrics. The zippered pockets came in handy for quick and safe access to my passport and the smaller pocket was excellent for money. As to the waist band the flannel wrapped elastic was extremely comfortable. I'm 5'1" and these pants were just the right length so as not to drag and ruin the hem. If you are over 5'6" they may be too short on you. I'm a size 12-14 and ordered the XL that were spot on, as well. These are what I would call investment pants- totally worth every penny and will last for years to come.

Nice pair of pants

These are a great pair of pants for hiking. I used them backpacking in Wyoming. I got the light color which was kinda dumb because they are already stained and looked dirty after the first day. They are so comfortable, though, that I even slept in them. I am very tall (5'10" with a 35-36 inch inseam) so they were too short even when I re-hemed them (look okay with boots, though.) There are marks from where the original hem was but it kinda just looks like a design and faded with a wash. If I had it to do over, I would just get the mens, ha. I wear an 8 normally (gap, old navy) and the mediums fit me well.

Look good!

These pants look very nice on and appear to be made of a sturdy durable fabric. I think that these will look fine for travel or casual wear as well as for hiking or xc skiing. Be aware though that these are cut very generously. I just measured the L that I purchased. They were more like a 34 -36 inch waist. This was significantly different than the size chart indicated. I went with my hip size when I ordered rather than my waist size because some others had indicated that they fit loose and I have a small difference between my hip and waist anyway. Also, the inseam measured 32 inches. So if you are short you will likely need to have these hemmed. Since they are a straight leg they should be easy to have taken up. If I were to get another pair of these I would definitely order then M instead. Although I think these will work fine with a belt and allow plenty of layers. Overall I think I will be happy with these pants.

Bring back the previous version

I ordered these as I have two pairs of the 2007 version which I wear to death. I found the waistband very uncomfortable, and the fabric stiff compared to the previous style. Also the legs do not fit as nicely. I use these pants for bushwalking, and need the ease of movement for some of the steeper and more difficult tracks we follow. The previous version was much more comfortable, so the new ones stay in the cupboard and the old ones still keep on working!

Awesome Pants!

These pants are really cute...especially for being an athletic-style pant. The grey color is photographed appropriately. I am 5'7" and weigh 125 lbs (I typically wear a 27" - 28" waist size in pants). I ordered a small, and they fit really well. The waistband has elastic in the back (don't worry...it's tastefully done and doesn't look nerdy), so that's something to keep in mind if you're not sure what size to get.

I was concerned about them being on the short side, but the length is perfect.

Thanks for the info about the elastic- i love the feel but do not want to look nerdy! It must be very discreet!

Responded on

Sarah, my guess would be that an XS would be the best fit for you -- unless you're using them for downhill or backcountry skiing, or if you want a tad looser fit I'd say go small. Hopefully this helps?

Are the cuffs of these pants durable? I'm concerned about ski edges cutting through, if the cuff is just softshell fabric.

Responded on

They have a two inch cuff; however, it's not reinforced with any extra material -- it's just doubled up on the pant material like any other cuff would be.

Hey i am going to Europe in November for 8 weeks and want warm travel pants. Thought the Patagonia simple guide soft shell would be a good move. Would they be a little too "ski-pants" in design for simple everyday travel? Are they noisy?! Might be going skiing so would they hold up for this?

Responded on

Kylie,
This would be a great travel pant for your trip that doesn't look like a ski pant, but would still do ok if you go skiing. You might want to check out the Patagonia Rock Guide Pant as well that uses the same soft shell material but is a little more of a casual pant.

Patagonia Simple Guide Pants

I just got back from a mountain biking trip to Colorado where I practically lived in these pants for four days. Water and dirt brush right off, keeping them looking clean despite multiple days of use. The zippered pockets are amazingly useful for organizing things like hotel key cards, keys, phone, wallet, etc. I thought the weight and stretch of these pants was perfect for the 40-60 degree temps I wore them in and the gusseted crotch came in handy when hopping on and off demo bikes. I personally think these pants run on the large side. I'm 5'6", 134lbs and usually a 6-8 in most pants with a 10 sometimes thrown in depending on the brand and got these in a medium and they practically fall off of me. Good thing they have belt loops!

Better design this time around

Previous year model was pretty miserable - what's up with the drawcord and no waist band?! For this year, the fabric is also very water repellent - water rolls right off. Fit is great, although I don't really like the elastic band at the waist and I plan to take it to a tailor to have him remove it. I have a small hip, had to size down in order to not have fabric bunching up at the hip. The pants has got a really good stretch to it. I don't see any problem trying to lift up my legs while bouldering / climbing.
