On nasty storm skiing days when the gapers are huddled in the lodge, you’ll be shredding free refills in the Patagonia Men’s Rubicon Rider Jacket. Made with weather-resistant softshell fabric and reinforced with waterproof breathable panels where you need them (shoulders, elbows, and bottom hem), this puffy ski jacket packs big warmth with just enough protection from the elements. The removable hood and powder skirt let you customize to the day’s conditions, and the quilted design adds some style and keeps the Thermogreen synthetic insulation from shifting. The Rubicon Rider also features lower webbing loops that attach to any Patagonia ski pants.
Bottom Line: Ride out the storm in the Rubicon Rider.
everything is solid about this jacket, it's a great warm winter piece. Only a few minor things I would change: put a two way zip on the front zipper, and not put black fleece on the collar of a brown jacket (I have the henna color). The cuffs adjust nicely without bunching up when cinched down, drawstring waist is nice and the powder skirt and hood zip off. Also, there is a small mesh pocket inside the outer chest pocket that's pretty cool. Not a totally water tight jacket but great for cold, snowy conditions.
okay, i'm on the fence. i ride in the sierras. will this puppy keep me warm and DRY when it's blowing and wet. (i'm not talking rain, i'm talking hour after hour of laps on the lifts).
This jacket will keep you warm, that's not much of a question. As far as keeping you dry, this jacket won't shed water/snow like a good hard shell. It is thick enough and has waterproof panels in the places that you are most likely to get wet, that it's typically only the jacket that get's wet, and not you.
I personally prefer a hard shell with the appropriate layers underneath. But if you like an insulated jacket, you'll be happy with this.
This is my first Patagonia jacket, and I actually got last years jacket. So far I absolutely love it. I live in South Eastern, Idaho and have had the opportunity to try it out up in the Teton's on dry blowing days. After reading some reviews about "wet conditions" I decided I would just take my time breaking it in and not try to go out in any rain storms, and I think that was a good idea. Overall, very warm, decent length, soft but not overly puffy. I even get plenty of comments on how good it looks (which is never a bad thing).

I am curious about the Camel color. On Patagonia's website, it looks considerably darker than it does here. Take a look: http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/mens-rubicon-rider-jacket?p=29453-0-030
Can anyone tell me which picture is closer to the actual color? Thanks a lot!
Well built, nice looking jacket...but this coat is WARM! I wear it only a few days a season. Last time it was -8 at the base of Winter Park in Jan, this jacket kept me toasty all day! Awesome cold weather gear!
I just received this guy and it looks sweet. However, how does this material do against a day of wet stuff? Seems like the heavier material would hold up but most of the middle DWR seems slightly questionable. Fortunately where I live we have lots of amazing blue sky days but I travel, unfortunately to the northeast, where damp, grey, wet snow--basically miserable--days come often and I'm wondering how it holds up, in terms of keeping you dry, under those conditions. Obviously, I'm not looking to use it as a rain shell with a day of a downpour but would be in winter wet conditions where it's wintry mix, wet stuff.
Snowman, your observations are right on the money -- the Rubicon Rider isn't designed to be a fully waterproof piece. The heavier fabric is full H2No and waterproof, w/ the Patagonia Deluge DWR for the rest of the jacket. Definitely good enough for the drier Boulder and Colorado winter conditions. If you're out in the wet Northeast weather all day you might want a fully waterproof jacket, but the Rubicon Ride is ok in wet snow and light rain for shorter periods of time. The good news is that since it's not down if it does wet out the synthetic Thermo Green insulation will still keep you warm.
I just received this in the mail yesterday. I ordered the Black size M on SAC for a KILLER deal. I live in Kansas, so this jacket won't see the slopes too often (I zipped the powderskirt out immediately), but it has been frigid here lately. I have not tested it yet, (short, warmer spell), but it looks and feels like my warmest coat yet! I love the fact that the shell and insulation both contain recycled content. I am an athletic ( 4-pac and a little pudge) 175, 6'. The first thing I noticed was that the sleeves were a little longer than I'm used to, then I extended my arms. No wrist exposure! It seems like all my jackets allow exposure when driving/biking. The second thing I noticed was that it DOES HAVE PIT-ZIPS! This was somewhat of a surprise because I even chatteded with a "gearhead" that confirmed the lack of Pit-zips (while a review stated they were included). The M cut leaves enough room for me to wear an additional layer of insullation under (a 200 fleece) although I doubt I will ever need it. The material appears to be durable and the lifetime warranty gives peace of mind. Patagonia is the $#![.
Awesome jacket, I just pick this up a few weeks ago, and have been trying to put it to the test. Conditions last week were about 1 degree F on the mountain, and I was pretty warm through the whole thing. looks good, fits good. On the negative side, the zippers are a little weak, and come off track pretty often. The thicker more resistant material is pretty good, but the lighter smoother material which makes up the majority of the jacket doesn't hold up too well.. I already have a couple little holes, and I think given more time carrying boards or skis around would result in even bigger tears down the road. I wish they had this in a sand color, metal zippers, and better material throughout the entire jacket, including the hood.
i have last years, which i'd give 4stars. and the reason this gets 5 is because they FINALLY ADDED PIT ZIPS, which was the one bad thing about last year's. this is a warm jacket, you heat up like crazy, and if you're riding the lift then your temp is fluctuating +/- 20º
