Built for big days in the backcountry.

The Patagonia Men's Reconnaissance Pants are for those high-mileage days in the backcountry. Their breathable softshell features a three-layer shell for burly protection from snow and weather, and fully taped seams prevent that unwanted bit of moisture from creeping through when the long slog up a steep coulie puts you waist-deep in the snow. The face of the fabric is treated with a DWR finish to make water bead along the face of the fabric, while snow seal gaiters prevent pow from creeping into your boots. The cuff is adjustable, so you can tighten them down around everything from a pair of ski boots to a pair of snowboarding boots. The cuffs are reinforced to protect the pants from rips and tears from buckles, boots, and edges.

    Great Multi-Use Ski Pant

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XSmall

I bought these pants to use primarily for touring and for that they have performed well, being quite breathable for the uphill but also blocking wind and most moisture on the descent. The vents are a nice feature. The fabric seems burly and is reinforced in high-wear areas. As far as sizing, they seemed to run a bit large. If you're on the cusp in waist size and length isn't an issue I recommend going smaller. I started with a size S and even though calling my waist size 28 is a major stretch right now (winter, beer) I had to size down to XS as they were quite baggy with far too much room at the waist. The stretchy belt doesn't seem as though it would correct well for an excessively large fit. Although perhaps not intended as a dedicated resort pant, I used the Recons for lift skiing in a blizzard with 40mph winds and was comfy with a light baselayer underneath. Really cold weather may dictate more layering or an actual hardshell, but so far the these seem to perform quite well in the weatherproof department with the added bonus of breathing much more freely than most Gore-Tex.

    soft-shell excellence

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

finally a pant that doesn't suck in the friend bought these last year and needless to say I was jealous and if you can't beat them join them. Glad I did. They vent great, the movement is unbelievable. I've had no trouble with the belt. The only minor complaint I have is the side pockets are a bit abnormal but I never carry anything in them so non issue.

    Great Ski Pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

First, these are the most comfortable ski pants I've owned and I've been skiing for 40 years. The fabric stretches and has lots of give making them super comfortable. They are very light weight and breathable.

I've worn them from 10 to 50 degrees, including in 50+ mph winds and was never uncomfortable. For the cold, I just added a layer and stayed plenty warm. In the warmer weather, I'd open the vents and stay comfortable.

Wore them at Tahoe during a typical wet snow, sleet, rain storm and I stayed dry. This was my biggest concern with a soft shell, but it wasn't an issue at all.

It's so nice to pull these off at the end of the day and not be all wet and clammy. I'll never go back to Pro Shell after wearing these.

Fit is typical for ski pants, a little relaxed, but not baggy.

    Complaints (minor)
With such a stretchy waist, it would be nice to have removable suspenders.
The cargo pockets need to be more towards the front. You end up sitting on anything you put in them.

    Backcountry skiing go to pants

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Lightweight, True to size fit that allows for layering, vents are a little on the small size but the pants breath well enough that it hasn't been a problem. The elastic waist belt is nice but I suspect it will stretch out eventually but I will probably replace it with a belt of my own soon. These are now my go to pants for ski touring and snow shoeing.
