The Patagonia Men's R2 Vest provides lightweight core warmth for hiking, climbing, backpacking, and other backcountry pursuits, and it doesn't take up a lot of room in your pack. Patagonia made this vest from stretchy fleece fabric so you can move freely up the climbing route or down the scree-strewn trail. This breathable fabric wicks perspiration so you don't get swampy-feeling, and it's compressible for easy packing. Shoulder seams on the R2 Vest are set forward, so they won't rub underneath your pack straps.
Bottom Line: For all-around backcountry use, the R2 Vest leads the pack.
i picked this vest up for my girlfriend, and regretted that i didn't get it for myself! i wish they still had the grey in stock. she always gets complimented on it, and never complains when we're out hiking or climbing. this looks and functions great. the regulator series by patagonia is definitely the competition to beat. very warm, lightweight, and breathable.
I'm 42'' chest and 38-39'' waist. TNF short sleeve shirts in M are fine but almost too tight on the chest. So, will an L size of the R2 vest be OK over either a short sleeve shirt or a midweight long sleeve shirt? I need freedom of movement so I can have one or two arms up (holdig a microphone on a boom pole) Thank you

This is a great light weight athletic cut (a.k.a. runs small) vest. I was amazed ow warm it was for the weight. It is my go to layer for when things start getting a little chilly.
This is a great vest for layering. Adds lots of warmth, but does not block the wind (and never claims to). The arm holes are cut right and the fit, as mentioned by others, is very athletic. I'm 6'4, 180# and the medium is good over a wool baselayer and r1 hoody, but nothing else. Looks to be high quality - I've had mine for about 9 months and it still looks brand new!
I bought the R2 vest to replace a no-name fleece vest I've been wearing and loving for almost 10 years, so the R2 had a lot to live up to, and so far, I'm loving it. The fleece is really lightweight and compact, so I can wear it under other layers with no bunching. The R2 has a close fit but is comfortable and not restricting at all over a couple of thin layers. The fleece is super soft, doesn't seem to pill, and the pockets are deep and big, but have a very low profile. I'm planning on 10+ happy years out of my R2 vest.
I've now had the R2 Fleece Vest for a month or so. I usually size Medium, and the Medium vest fits me just fine. I know people have noted that it is a slim fit. I'm not overweight, but neither am I slender, and it fits without problem. I usually wear it under a Patagonia soft shell outside.
It's plush in texture, virtually weightless, and warm. I have no complaints at all. It has a rather "open weave" to it, so wouldn't be appropriate as a wind barrier. Perfect under something.
Great vest! Super light weight but warm as heck under a shell. Looks good too. Athletic fit - I'm 5'8", 170, 42in chest and I wear a size large. I tried the med but it was too tight around the waist. Skied Alta the week of Dec 6th. It was subzero with the windchill but the Pat 2 vest over a mid base and expedition wgt crew or Pat R1 pullover, kept me warm and comfortable under my hard shell.
