Thought this fleece was just ok, sort of had a hard time finding a place for it in the layering scheme. Might be for a little too specific of a purpose for my liking. I think it would be great for layering under a shell, but I found the R1 to be just as warm, and substantially more windproof. I know it is designed to be layered, but plenty of other pieces out there can act as a warm layer and a stand alone, breathable, wind resistant fleece.

This thing rocks! perfect fit very warm and very breathable. Throw a shell over it and you have a great backcountry system. I like the r2 over the r3 because the r2 can be layered with a puffy and a shell in winter while I think the r3 would be a little too warm for that use. Pairs great with a marmot ROM shell.

Great 200 weight Fleece. It's lighter than my Khumbu, but I like the fit of the R2.
Perfect for my recent trip to Los Angeles , where it was cool in the mornings and evenings, and on my return back to louisiana where it was 45 degrees and cold, this Fleece kept me cozy and compfy. Lots of compliments on the Dill color I got. Stoked!
To good!

My biggest complaint - it just won't wear out! I have been wearing my R2 for over ten years now and I want a new jacket - but I need a reason. And the R2 is still going strong! I live in Colorado and wear my jacket probably 10 months out of the year...as casual or a layer! Everything from hikes and snow tubing to shoveling the driveway. It is amazingly lightweight, wicks incredibly well, and compresses for trips - and I have never had a problem with zippers not working or seams ripping.

I gave this as a gift and it fits and looks great. 6'4" and 210 the Large fits great. Worn either as a layer under a shell, or alone this is perfect.
Love my R2 fleece!

This is a great layer to have. It works well in fall or spring as a stand alone piece. In the winter skiing I tend to get overheated by down and synthetic insulated jackets. This somehow has the perfect amount of breathability and keeps me at a consistent temperature when coupled with a Gore Tex shell on cold days (15 degrees or below).
Perfect fit, great feel, Awesome!

6'1", #210, 42-43 jacket, and I bought a large which is form-fitting and is perfect. I alternate this with a few other jackets as daily commuters here in the Wasatch, and am never cold! Love this jacket!

6'4" and 210#, size 44L suit coat, tried on a Nanopuff in XL and it felt a little snug, any suggestions on sizing for the R2 fleece jacket, XL or XXL? Thanks!

Per your question, I am a very similar build as you: 6'4" @ ~200 lbs, with long arms and same coat size. I wear size large in most Patagonia jackets because the sleeves tend to run long. However, I bought and returned the R2 fleece jacket in size L. It seemed too unflatteringly-tight and short through the torso. I didn't try the XL but I would think the XL would fit us better -- start there.
I didn't care for the stretch side panels and fleece texturing of the R2. FWIW, I bought this Norrona fleece in size XXL (sizing is European) and found it to be a great fit for my proportions and kept it. http://www.backcountry.com/norrna-trollveggen-warm2.0-fleece-jacket-mens

I am 6"1, #210, and wear a 42-43 suit coat. I bought the large and the fit is perfect! its form-fitting,which is what i was after with this piece. I would probably go XL since your chest is bigger than mine. An XL would not drown me; i wanted this to fit tighter.
Softer than expected

I'm 6'and 176 lbs.
I wear in a size medium.
It's perfect for me.
Wearing this jacket, I'm going to enjoy winter hiking.

The purpose of this jacket is to provide mid layer warmth under a shell in Winter or in my case to provide highly breathable outerwear in the summer evenings in the Alpine. I traded in my Nano Puff for the R2 because frankly the Nano Puff doesn't breath and I would quickly get sweaty/clammy if I was in cool temps (i.e., 50's to low 60's). The R2 is more versatile. In cool temps I can have it as an outer layer, knowing that any significant heat build up will easily escape before I sweat, in colder weather I can throw on a wind shirt/shell over it to block any wind.

The Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket is super soft on the outside but not as much warmth as I expected I liked the better sweater weight better but this is still awesome for a little warmer weather.

I'm looking for a spring/fall type of fleece. Something light and not too warm. I live in KY and temps are fairly moderate during these seasons but can get chilly at night. Is this jacket too warm for this purpose? (temps I have in mind are 50-70 during the day and 40-60 at night)

Depending on how you personally deal with temperature, the R2 may be too warm. If you're normally a cold person, it may be perfect. If you're normally warm, take a look at the R1 series or something similar.

I would think Small would have a fitted fit and Medium a relaxed fit. You are right between sizes IMO.

I agree with Mike. I'm 5'8" 145-150lbs and I usually wear Patagonia jackets in a size small, but they definitely have a more fitted look. I go with medium for baselayers, because they end up being uncomfortably tight.
I really like it.

Perfect layer or summer evening

Really light weight fleece, slim fit. The pockets are amazing that when they are open the bow out making it easy access. when they are closed then bow in staying out of the way. Use it as a light sweater on cold evenings, or layer underneath shell.
Great fleece when there's no wind

I love Patagonia and have been impressed with the quality of all of their products - including this fleece. I bought this after spending a few hours reading reviews. I live in the northwest with normal temperatures around 45 degrees during winter. It rains a lot, so I planned on coupling it with my hard-shell.
The good: It's SUPER soft and comfortable. I loved wearing it even inside. I found it to be comfortable from down to around 50 and up to around 65. However, I grew up in San Diego, so take that with a grain of salt.
The bad: Without a shell, even the SLIGHTEST amount of wind pierces right through this jacket. I realize it's a fleece and not made to block wind, but I was expecting close to the same level of wind protection as a regular sweatshirt or long sleeve shirt. Being soft and stretchy, it also would get caught up my shell when trying to take them off.
If you plan on not wearing this in the wind or always having a shell, this is an awesome jacket. It compresses down very small and packs a surprising amount of warmth.
