    Minimal design for maximum possibilities.

Whether you're layering up for an alpine ascent, ski mountaineering, or cool weather climbing, you'll be happy with the Patagonia Men's R1 Fleece Hooded Pullover. Utilizing Polartec Power Grid fleece, the R1 delivers exceptional stretch, a good amount of warmth, and a high level of breathability, making it great on its own or layered under a shell. Polygiene permanent odor control shrugs the resulting odors of time well spent in the mountains, while its slim fit, snug-fitting hood, and discreet thumbholes reduce bulk when it's worn as a midlayer.

    Rad Mid-Layer

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:True to size

I'm pretty darn stoked on my R1 Hoody. Comparing it to my BD Coefficient Hoody, the R1 is a little softer and warmer, thanks to a slightly larger grid pattern on the fleece. It's incredibly comfortable.
As for fit, it's pretty much spot-on. It's not as slim as the BD Coefficient, so I was able to go with a size small in the R1 vs a medium with the BD. The R1's sleeves are about the same when compared to the medium Coefficient, but BD's hoody is considerably longer in the torso, which I like because it's easy to keep under a harness.
All in all, I think I'm going to have a hard time choosing between the R1 and the Coefficient as my go-to mid-layer.

    5 star layer

This piece only has 5 star reviews so that should tell u all u need to know. It is a great addition to anybody's cool/cold gear arsenal. Trim fit without being constricting makes it a great piece to layer with either a t-shirt or a compression shirt underneath. Personally, I wear a piece of cold-gear UA under this, then this, then a shell, and I can ski into very cold conditions. Bonus, u can wear it straight to the bar and meet that sweet spot of warm, comfortable, and casual. I actually own 2 of these and 1 of the full zip jackets and love all of them. 5f 10in and the medium is dialed in

I never leave home without my Patagonia R1. It's the perfect layer for touring, climbing and anything else. The hood is my favorite feature - forgetting the fact that it makes me look like a teletubby, it fits under my helmet or hat comfortably and has enough coverage without being annoying. The material is extremely soft to the touch and pretty darn durable. It wicks well and dries quickly, keeping me comfortable during high aerobic pursuits. It fits true to size and is pretty close fitting. I'm 5'10 175 and sized up to a large for the longer length so it tucks nicely into my pants and stays tucked in - medium would have fit perfectly well otherwise.

    Soooo warm.

Just got this for Christmas from my mom. Thanks Mom! This piece rocks. It really packs a punch though. It's way to warm to wear as a layer on warmer days. But on any day below 32 degrees Its on my body. I got a medium and its a little snug but I don't mind that as I am wearing it as a layer underneath a jacket. In short, its super warm and I love it for storm riding.

    Go-to Piece

As my title implies, this is my go-to piece for layering for nearly every winter activity. From snowshoeing, to ice climbing, to A/T skiing, to you name it, this mid-layer does it all. The gridwork on the inside of the fleece allows for great breathability for higher output activities, but it is also very warm for its weight. It pairs perfectly over merino baselayers and under a shell.

I've been working in Outdoor Retail for over 7 years and have seen Patagonia keep making this piece better and better with small incremental changes. Fall '15 saw a some pretty big changes. Overall, this is still the same kick-ass fleece, but I have to admit they've taken away some of my favorite things about it.

For those of you who are familiar with some older versions, you'll automatically be able to feel the biggest change which is the feel; it is not as soft as it used to be on the outside. A benefit of this is that it is most likely more abrasion-resistant. However, even after one washing, the face fabric started to pill more than I'd expect. We'll see how this holds up over years of washing.

Another change is the removal of the lighter-weight fleece on the bottom-third of the torso, wrist cuffs, and underarm gussets. I loved these features as they allowed you to tuck in the fleece into your pants for better warm without bulk, or under a glove. The armpit feature allowed for greater breathability. The new R1 Hoody has none of this.

One change for the positive is the length of the zipper. The near 3/4 length allows you to dump a lot of heat if you're doing something really aerobic like skinning. The hood still kick ass too. It's come in handy for me during a mountaineering trip in the Wind River Range when I lost my touque.

As a stand alone, the R1 Hoody is also a great top for shoulder season hiking when the temps dip a bit. Throw it on under a wind shell and you'll be set for some peak-bagging some 14ers too.

I may be a little picky with the changes, but I'm still giving this a 5/5 for how well this fleece delivers. Don't like the hood? Too long? Pick up one of the pullovers or jackets that Patagonia make in the R1.

    No joke. This layer rocks!

It's easy to see a ton of five-star reviews for a piece of clothing and wonder to yourself, "Huh. It couldn't possibly be that awesome!"
Oh, but I can assure you, stranger... it lives up to the hype. I've used this layer ever since I got into climbing a couple years ago, and I absolutely love this piece.

The stretchy base of the fleece prevents it from riding up when you are reaching above your head. The scuba style hood provides a noticeable difference in warmth when worn, and the half zip allows for venting of heat when you're doing strenuous activity.

I've worn this fleece for activities ranging from backpacking to winter cragging and it's the absolute best. After a couple seasons, the only wear that is visible is that the area near the cuffs have some small holes from crack climbing. However, the fleece itself is quite durable even for chimney and OW climbing.

What are you waiting for? Get this and you won't regret it for a moment!

    No joke. This layer rocks!

    Super warm, even up high.

Bought this as a gift for someone that works at a local ski resort. The weather has been cold this past week and he reports that this jacket has helped a lot. He uses it as a mid-layer, it runs true to size and is really soft and comfortable. It isn't restricting in any movements and isn't too bulky.

I picked this awesome piece of insulation up after reading all the rave reviews. So far I've used it as an additional piece of insulation on colder days when my Arcteryx Atom LT wasn't quite enough on the ski slopes. This piece was excellent at adding just the right amount of additional warmth while managing moisture perfectly. Most days I needed it mostly for the cold lift rides and any time spent at the top of the hill. Skiing down I'd get nice and toasty and even build up a bit of a sweat. Never once did I feel like my layers were holding moisture or letting me get cold due to being wet. I highly recommend this very versatile layer!

I got turned onto this thing via one of the backcountry gear heads.

This fleece is great!! It's not as "stylish" as a lot of the other fleeces on the market but this thing is unbeatable in regards to working gear.

Just spent 3 days in Yaak, Montana and had temperatures as low as -8. I never took this thing off once! It was a great layer to have(I had a big down jacket on top). The hood is awesome and pretty much rendered my beanie useless. Was also great to sleep in. Highly recommend for anyone shopping for a fleece.

If you had to own one pair of fleece, this is it. I've abused it so much and can say that it's bomb-proof. I wash it about once every 6 months and it never smells too bad. Buy one, i'm buying a second pair right now while it's on sale!!

This is one of those garments you cant believe you lived without for so long. A slew of my friends own the R1 hoody and rave about it. I picked mine up about 3 weeks ago and have worn it most days since. Nice slim fit that is perfect for climbing. The grid fleece allows warmth while still being able to dump heat for high output activities. Its lightweight, and the helmet compatible hood is nothing short of perfect. I'm able to wear it under or over my helmet due to the stretch. Thumb holes are always an added bonus.

I got the green color. Flashy, but I prefer visibility in the backcountry. Gets dirtier easily, but has simple washing instructions.

    Superb hoodie!

I reviewed the R1 on Backcountry as well. The piece is about the same with the added addition of the sweetest hood you can wear. It is a great underlayer and eliminates most instances of needing to cram a warm cap under a climbing or skiing helmet. The balaclava provides good coverage too on those days when the wind is whipping. Same great features as the R1 but even more perfect.

    Superb hoodie!

So they made some changes to the R1 this year. The zipper is not asymmetrical anymore, and its a little shorter. They are also using an updated fabric that provides more breathability. The symmetrical zipper I thought was terrible at first, still has a fleece flap on the inside though so the zipper wont freeze to your lips. The shortened length isnt that much shorter and makes the overall garment lighter which I like.

I am 5'8" 200 lbs and I wear a large in everything, same for this. Fits a little snug but that's how its supposed to fit. Makes it great for climbing as there isnt a lot of excess fabric flapping or getting in the way of anything.

I use this layer in almost every sport I partake in. I climb in it, ski, ski tour, and even RAFT! The Hood is my favorite part, no need to carry an extra beanie and keep track of that. The hood can zip up over your mouth and if you are belaying you can tuck your nose into it as well but, expect some fog on your glasses if you do this.

Patagonia also has the best repair center, they will fix anything. They added some fabric to my wrist on this piece after years of tearing it apart. Was tough to send in for the few weeks but, I lived without it for a little while... Barely.

I am in the orange R1 on the front of the boat, not scared of the water in the slightest.
