Description

Layer up right for the cold.

The Patagonia Men’s R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover gives you the extra warmth you need when belaying your ice climbing partner or waiting for the town bus to take you up to the resort base area. This breathable, moisture-wicking fleece works great as a heavy base-layer or as a mid-layer when you ski, climb, or tour in chilly temps. A warm hood helps keep your head and neck toasty, and cuffs with thumb-holes help block out snow. This slim-fit pullover can be worn over a lightweight base-layer, and the R1’s stretchy arm panels give you more than enough flexibility to maneuver through thick trees when you ski or to reach for that bomber hold when you rock climb.

Product perfect

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This is the best jacket I have had so far. Warm, fits perfectly breathable. Perfect for summer climbing as a top coat, and in winter as a base layer. Patagonia rules :-)

Nothing that hasn't been said

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Had a regular R1 with the long body and long cuffs- no thumb loops- before Pataguch shortened it and love the shirt. With it being well on its way to obliteration, i went for the hoody and havent looked back. the extra length in the body is essential for covering the crack when de-skinning skis at the top of a run, and the thumb loop and long cuffs help to keep the sleeves down when re-donning the outer layer for a decent. Killer mid-layer, not much else can be said.

On the best ridge hike of my life.

This hoodie is definitely the highest used piece of gear in my quiver. Year round use! This thing takes a lick'n and keeps on tick'n!

The Alpine Midlayer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is THE alpine midlayer. Thumb loops keep the blood running to my hands warm, deep zipper allows me to dump heat when I'm working hard, hood means I dont have to carry a backup hat, cut long so it stays under a harness, body mapped fabric weights for comfort, pocket for the small essentials (gu and chapstick mostly). I only wear mine when I'm expecting temps to be very low (30F and below for the high). I wear a lightweight merino base layer under it and a houdini over it. With this action suit top layer, I can pretty much move through anything. Throw an ultralight shell in the pack if the forecast is bad and the DAS for a little security and we're ready for alpine climbing all over the world. Noteworthy too is the fact that this is one of the only patagonia tops that fits me well. I'm 42" chest, broad shoulders, 33" waist and the L is perfect.

One of my must-have items

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

After I received some nasty frostbite on my lower back in Jan 2013, the local EMS store manager recommended this item to me despite the fact that they don't even sell it. The price was off putting, but I trust the guy, so I took the leap of faith. It is easily one of my favorite items of clothing. It is always in my pack, and I was used throughout winter. I even wore it on Mount Washington on June 22nd, 2013 when I was doing my presi-traverse. The only issue I found with it is that during one winter hike I wore it as an outer layer and it absorbed too much moisture, eventually freezing in the elbows at elevation. I realized that this was user error and it is not great for those types of conditions (I should have only put it on at elevation, but I am lazy sometimes). All in all, it's an item without which I will not go into the mountains!

Wow!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Best mid-layer piece I have ever owned. The hood doubles as a face mask when fully zipped, its breathes and dries with the utmost efficiency. Its hard to imagine outdoor pursuits before owning this, definitely would recommend purchasing. I am 5'8" and around 200lbs the large is perfect for me. The hood also fits perfectly under most climbing helmets.

Wow!

Nice midlayer piece

  • Gender: Male

I was hoping this would be a nice stand alone pullover that would block the wind a little bit, but it doesn't.
Pro's:
Lightweight
Small hood
Athletic fit
Stretchy
Looks Great!

Con's:
Ninja mask when zipped up (not my thing)
Doesn't block any wind (I know, I'm picky)
No hand pockets

I was hoping to use this as a stand alone jacket in chilly slot canyons to help keep me warm by blocking wind. It ended up not being a good fit for what I wanted it for, but overall it's a great pullover!

Perfect

Does the R1 hoody need another review? Maybe not but couldn't resist, this thing is that good. I reserve this piece for skiing and climbing, works perfectly for those. Warm but breathes well. Really appreciate the low bulk lower torso area that can be tucked into pants for extra warmth. Hood is great as well, will fit under or over a climbing helmet and can eliminate the need to bring a hat along. Not very windproof, but when combined with a light shell it keeps you very toasty.

I wear it almost daily

Truly a piece that can be worn anywhere. It looks sharp when worn alone and layers perfectly with everything else. I'm 6' 195lbs with long arms and the XL fits awesome.

Very Functional Piece, Love it!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been using this hoody as a layering piece under a shell for skiing, and also on its own for trail running in cold-ish temps (material is soft and comfortable on bare skin). I'm very impressed with how well this thing transports moisture away from the body and keeps you from feeling clammy. Also, the balaclava, hood, and thumb-loops are great for skiing, although it zips up a little tight over your mouth. My only real gripe is that the sleeves fit so tight in the forearms that it's tough to fit long-sleeve baselayers underneath, but a t-shirt fits easily, and you can actually just wear this thing as a heavy base layer in the first place. I'm 5'11, 170lbs and the medium fits great. This piece will definitely be getting a lot of wear!

great.

mostly just adding to the chorus of praise and giving my sizing info.

6'2" 165lb. large is a little looser than i'd like but medium's too small. still love this thing.

colors are a little weird so i went with black. overall absolutely unbelieveable piece-- warm, light, feels great. ive worn it literally every day ive climbed this winter. i dont wash mine often enough to wear it around town, but its definitely stylish enough for that.

hood looks really stupid, but i only wear it under a helmet anyway, and it adds a TON of warmth (and keeps your neck warm way better than a hat!).

overall, WELL worth the money. this is my go-to article of clothing for literally anything other than t-shirt and shorts adventures.

beautiful piece

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

But it runs small. Be sure to size up. Didn't end up keeping it as the next size wasn't available. I measured a dead on small on the size chart, but a medium would have been a better fit.

Great product, misleading color.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Perfect addition to my arsenal for cold-weather layering. However be warned, the Paintbrush Red color looks nothing like the picture Backcountry.com shows. It is more of an orange color. See the picture at the Patagonia website for a more accurate example: http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-regulator-r1-fleece-hoody?p=40072-0-065

Still a great product, just wish it was like the red in the picture.

Need I say it again?

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the greatest article of clothing ever made. Perfect fitting for me in a L. I am 6'2", thin athletic, 175 lbs. Medium is restricting, large is perfection. Length is awesome for skiing to keep cold drafts out. Chest pocket is perfect. thumb holes if you want them. long enough sleeves. drys super fast, keeps cool and warm when needed. perfect in every way! and from a great company to boot!

This is a great technical layering piece for pretty much anything.

Buy this

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This might be the best item of clothing I own. I wear it all the time for almost everything outside. It is very thoughtfully designed. The thinner R1 fleece combined with the option for full of minimal coverage makes this my go to mid layer.

I am 5'8 135lbs. A small is perfect

Awesome except for the forearm

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm 5'10", 180 and a solid medium according to the size chart. I bought this to replace my beaten old north face as a midlayer for snowboarding and bumming around. The fit in the chest and waist was great. However, the forearm was way too tight; similar to compression base layer. I tried a large, which resulted in lots of extra space in the chest/waist, but almost no change in the sleeve. Does anyone know if the standard R1 pullover has more room in the arm?

Nothing to add that hasn't been said

This is a great piece of gear, I'm 6' 185lbs athletic and the large fits great, a tad bit loose, but snug enough in the arms that a medium would be too small. Can't wait to try it out in colder conditions but so far it seems pretty versatile in the temperature range. Have worn it in breezy and 75f and it wasn't too warm. Seems to breath really well. Love the bright blue color.

Great Pullover!

After using the R1 for a couple weeks this fall in the White Mountains I don't think ill buy another pullover again. Temps consistently dropped into the 20's and 30's and I kept pleaty warm with this and a flannel.
Sizing is also great. I'm 6'1" and 160 lbs and the medium is tight but perfect for layering.
