Play hard in the R1 Fleece Jacket.

Ask any climber, mountaineer, or backcountry skier and you'll quickly discover that Patagonia fleeces hold iconic distinction in the outdoor community—and the Men's R1 Fleece Jacket only adds to the fuel to the fire. With warm, highly breathable Regulator fleece material, the R1 is a go-to jacket for the full spectrum of mountain endeavors. This jacket breathes when you sweat during a hard climb, it stretches when you're ladder-hooking your way up a steep slope in deep powder, and it compresses easily when you're pack up for a peak-bagging mission on foot. Inside and out, the R1 exudes a sort of versatility that few midlayer jackets can match.

  • Regulator grid fleece uses warm, breathable, and highly flexible Power Dry material inside and out
  • R2 grid fleece interior insulates against the cold and it has a soft, smooth finish that easily slides over your base layer
  • Both the internal and external fleece materials are breathable for comfort and highly compressible so this jacket is easy to pack
  • Fleece material is Bluesign-approved so you know it came from a supply chain audited to reduce consumption and environmental impact

So nice fleece jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Height: 5' 6"
    Weight: 138 lbs
    Size Purchased: SMALL

I think patagonia R1 jacket is the best lightweight fleece jacket, it breaths very well and also warm enough for hiking. the fit is a little tight , but I can accept.
My only complaint is the color:El Cap Khaki seems ugly. I bought El Cap Khaki color since it's more cheaper than others color model.

Really like this base layer. Check Size

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 10"
    Weight: 220 lbs
    Size Purchased: X Large

I originally went with the XL as I'm ~5'10", 220 lbs, 45" chest and my biceps usually cause me problems in fitting into tops as they usually pinch/bind in that spot or at the arm pits. I checked out this in a Large but it was too small. The only odd thing I found about this base layer is that it is long in the torso apparently allowing you to tuck it in.

Quality as expected

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 6' 0"
    Weight: 180 lbs
    Size Purchased: lg

Patagonia is usually on top of their game. This piece is stretchy, very comfortable, and very soft. It fits more like a shirt than a jacket. By that I mean it is snugger and more fitted than I would expect from a jacket. I am 6' 180 lbs. The large is roomy but not too big. It is best for layering under a shell. It is more expensive than the competition but when you use it all the time and want to buy another it's hard to complain. Cons: It is unusually long. This piece is definitely more mid layer than outer-wear in my opinion.

Good jacket--inconsistent sizing.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

It was very difficult to determine proper sizing on this piece since Patagonia apparently keeps changing the fit. I'm 6'2" 180lbs with a 43" chest and bought both the Medium and Large. I returned both. The large fit me like a billowing sack and the medium was just a bit too tight in the chest, which was frustrating because I loved the feel of this jacket. I ended up getting a Black Diamond CoEfficient (it uses the same Polartec Powerdry grid fleece) in size Large, which fits perfectly.

What is center back length of a medium?

Responded on

Grant - I have the R1 pullover, and the R1 jacket feels longer. Have you noticed this as well?

So nice, I bought it twice.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I had the R1 half zip and loved it so much I bought this one. It looks a little nicer wearing it alone, and is perfect for cool weather. It layers great when it turns chilly. Great for spring skiing.

Perfect for Fall

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This fleece was worth the price. Patagonia continues to do it right. Super comfortable and a nice light layer for Fall and year-round. The thumb holes and the different cuff material are nice touches as well.

Great little jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Since getting one of these I have worn it almost non-stop. It is unbelievably versatile and comfortable. It works fantastically when used as part of a layering system, say, under a down jacket and shell or even just by its self. I've worn it next to my skin a few times and over the top of merino base layers and in both cases it was great but would probably keep wearing something merino underneath just so I dont have to wash the R1 all the time. The materials Patagonia use for this fleece are great and the lack of stitching under the arms means it is a very comfortable garment under other layers. I dont have any doubt that Ill have it for years to come in true Patagonia style. My one and only annoyance with this jacket is the thumb holes which are just tiny bit tight and slightly awkward to use. Other than that its great and I think everyone should own one! :) I have it in a medium and Im about 6ft and pretty skinny and it fits really well with a bit of space to breathe underneath.

I'm in love

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I already had a Patagonia R1 Hoody, but didn't like that because the combination of the hood, half zip chest, and slim fit made it impractical for layering where you change layers often (backcountry skiing). The R1 Jacket version solves all these problems and improves on them. It has a fantastic fit, is easy to take on/off, adds handwarmer pockets, and maintains some of the great features of the Hoody version (thumb loops, long hem for staying tucked in). In addition to being great for skiing, its wonderfully cozy yet breathable as a warmup jacket for biking or hiking, or just wearing casually. Great color too (glass blue)!
What I like:
*trim, athletic fit works great for layering
*thumb loops for keeping hands warm
*full zip means easy to take on/off when layering
*handwarmer pockets
*long, snug hem for keeping tucked into ski pants or under climbing harness or hip belt
*R1 material keeps me warm but breathes extremely well
What I don't like:
*that I didn't buy the Jacket version instead of the Hoody first!
Bottom line is this is easily one of my favorite all-around pieces of gear.

2013 Updated model and a different fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

The fit is completely different with the updated model in my opinion and not in a good way. I own the Patagonia R1 Fleece Hooded Pullover in a Medium and love the fit (except the length). This updated model in a medium has very baggy arms and seems to have lost it's technical fit. I ended up sizing down to get the more technical/athletic fit and I found it was a good choice as the arms were no longer baggy and everything else fit like I was hoping it would. This model DOES have thumbholes. The stitching is also different and puts seams in better locations in my opinion. The armpits are seam-free which makes the piece more comfortable when worn tight. I'm about 5'8" 140lbs with an athletic build and 37" chest.

Responded on

So for a guy that is athletic but 5'7, 156lbs, and 42" chest and 29" waist the medium will probably fit like a glove?

Responded on

@fre620... So did you eventually got a Medium?? I'm 5'9 160lbs, Chest 38-39". If it fits you then I would go for the medium too. I'm going to wear this on top of a baselayer.

Stop thinking and buy it

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is my go to mid layer for everything including skiing/ice climbing/running. It's also perfect for just walking around town, or throwing it on over a button down in the fall. May be my favorite piece of gear. I've never met anyone that didn't like their R1
