Outdoor enthusiasts and mountain athletes turn to the Patagonia Mens R1 Full-Zip Fleece Jacket to keep their cores warm and comfortable. This breathable, moisture-wicking jacket can be used underneath your shell for increased warmth on super-cold winter days or as a spring jacket on not-so-chilly days. The R1 Fleeces jersey microfiber face allows for smooth layering, and thanks to its high / low polyester grid interior, you can easily compress this quick-drying jacket into your backpack. Dont forget to recycle this killer fleece through Patagonias Common Threads Recycling Program once it has seen years and years of abuse.

Bottom Line: Play hard in the R1 Fleece Jacket.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

great little jacket

great little jacket, throw it on for a cool morning commute, pack it up for sitting around a fire durring the fall or wear it under a shell for more sever weather. i love this and the slick outer part is great for layering because it doesnt get stuck or snag under a shell. it wont be windproof or keep you warm when it gets below 60 if your not moving but for what its for, it does a superb job

I think you might actually want to go XL unless you're looking for a very trim, more technical fit. I'm 6' 170 and wear a large comfortably, and medium's a bit too small.

Best bet will be to compare your chest and waist measurements against the sizing chart below the price. Best of luck!

Superb Insulator

By:
January 12, 2012

A simple waffle top with a full zip. Not much to say other than it fits great at a size L being 6'1'" and 195 pounds. Keeps me warm unless the winds get up too much. Worn under a soft shell, this is usually enough to keep me warm even in the German winter. Paired with a loft insulating layer, you can sit around happy and warm all night.

The above pic is a pretty accurate depiction of Alpha Green - kind of Olive Taupe? (not too green)

One of my most used jackets

By:
March 10, 2011

I am very happy with my purchase of the R1. My brother bought one of these and after I tried his on I knew I had to buy one for myself. First of all, I noticed that it is very light weight. If I use a hardshell over the R1 I am PLENTY warm, even in our 30 degree weather. Plus it looks great enough that I can just wear this over an undershirt and look good walking through town. The texture is soft and has a "waffle" like pattern but isn't tacky by any means. Overall, I recommend this to anyone looking for a great laying jacket.

I would go with a large, at 6'2" and 185 I wear a large in this and it fits perfectly, I also have a really long torso and have had no issues with the large being to short. I feel the xl would be a bit big on you for sure.

This piece has a slim fit, so it depends on how tight you like it. There is also a sizing chart under the price that may help with your choice.

I only take it off to wash it

The R1 fleece is a pleasure to wear. It’s one of those things that always finds a place in your pack, regardless of your destination or activity. If you have not had the opportunity to take a look at the R1 material in person, do it. It is pretty cool stuff. The waffle texture of the interior provides a comfortable amount of warmth and insulation while the smooth exterior makes it perfect for layering under shells. It glides easily over the skin, and won’t snag on long underwear or other base-layers. It does come in a ¼ zip at a slightly reduced price, but the full zip is worth the extra change when it comes to disrobing after cold weather exercise.
As a standalone piece, the R1 works perfectly in fall/early winter weather. However, it is to be used strictly as a base-layer if you plan to take it near or below freezing temps. If you are looking for a warmer fleece, look toward the R2-R4. The higher number = warmer fleece (and higher price).
Pros: Great design, comfortable fit, amazing material, built to last.

Cons: Your friends will steal it.

Overall: The best all purpose poly fleece.

Hey Mark, I think a large would fit your torso and sleeve length better than the medium.
The sleeve on the large is 35-36in.

The R1 full zip is warm, breathable, and has a great fit. In cold weather it makes a perfect layering piece over a Capilene 3 and under a Nano Puff Hoody and shell. Great for cooler evenings over a t-shirt or baselayer. I cannot recommend this enough.

I just received this glorious mid-layer today right before I went nordic skiing with my wife. The timing couldn't be more perfect because we are getting hit with a spring storm (really wet snow). I need a breathable, yet warm base layer to go under a shell jacket. It works as described and is really comfortable to just sit around in too. I am 5'9" 175 and a medium fit is perfect. If you are teetering whether to buy it or not, it is definitely worth the investment.

Like a second skin to me

By:
December 29, 2011

I bought this because it was on sale, color is killer, and I wanted a nice lightweight fleece. The slim fit is great as other patagonia stuff is too boxy for my frame. I'm 6ft 160lb and wear a medium. It's a tad short length-wise but I can live with that because of the fit everywhere else. Anyway, there's rarely an occasion when I don't grab this guy. It's a great stand alone when there's a slight chill out or an equally great base layer for colder temps. Wrap a down sweater, rain shell, softshell, insulated softshell over this thing or any combo of those mentioned depending on temp and you're set. It's slick outer material makes it slide right into your shell no problem and never gets bunched up. One star short of a 5 star rating due to price- 140 is a LOT for 100wt fleece. If you can grab it on sale it's not as painful and your expeditions will be a lot more comfortable.

Returning

By:
December 27, 2011

I bought this for my 22 year old son.. I am returning it. The jacket has a tighter fit.. It is shorter than his other Patagonia jackets. It just wasn't the jacket we were looking for. He is tall and thin, but the larger size wouldn't have helped.m

Patagonia R1 full zip & pull over

By:
February 5, 2011

I have 2 R1 full zips & 2 pull over's in size large. I'm 5'10" 165, athletic build and could have gone with the medium for more form fit but I like a little room so lg works. They are warm, great looking and you can live in them when temps drop. I'm a gear addict and these are on my favorite list..

'Patagonia R1 full-zip fleece' = simply fantastic!

By:
November 19, 2011

I'm a HUGE fan of Patagonia. 5'10', 185lbs, chest 42in; however, medium fits me perfectly. It is very light (I wouldn't say ultralight) and yet it maintains your core-warmth well. The inner "grid" system makes this fleece jacket the most versatile; definitely works great not only as a baselayer but also as an insulating layer. R1, obviously, isn't warmer than the rest of the Regulator series jackets, but it definitely adds warmth when layered up. I have mine in alpha green, my favorite color, and it looks awesome! I've been wearing mine for the recent hiking trips, and I can say now it is one of my most essential gears. I recommend you try it.

My Favorite Sweater

By:
September 16, 2011

I am probably a little bit biased here - I have more Patagonia in my closet than most retailers have in their inventory, at least those that are located here in my little corner of paradise. But, this is the one sweater I seem to always reach for - headed out to the beach for a bonfire, a 2nd layer under a rain shell for a walk among the trees, stuffed into a pack to ward off the chill standing in the clouds on an afternoon alpine trek, or just headed to the office, this one does it all. Excellent attention to details, awesome fabrics, durability that I still can't believe, these are the reasons I keep going back to Patagonia. This sweater is a perfect example of these things.

Lives up to the hipe

So before buying this fleece I'm reading the reviews and seeing a bunch a really positive ones. After putting the fleece on for the first time I completely see why. The material on the jacket is really soft and comfortable. It's pretty light weight but has kept me warm when chilly out. I haven't used it yet as a base layer so can't comment there. I'm 5'10 and 150 pounds and the medium fits me perfect. The deep space color is pretty true to the picture on the site.
