My go to fleece!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Close fitting, smooth outer finish, grid-fleece on the inside. Basically everything I wanted out of a fleece. I also like this non-hooded version better since its easier to layer with during a climb or while snowboarding. The fleece is light weight yet warm enough for Seattle's fall weather (~50 degrees). The smooth outer finish ensures that the fleece doesn't stick to everything and doesn't clump up lint. Also, the collar is very soft and doesn't chafe my chin when it's zipped up all the way. Also, this thing breathes amazingly well and the chest pocket vents quite nicely when you begin to warm up. It's nice to have a fleece that I can actually hike/climb in. All in all: a truly amazing piece that comes with me on every trip.

I loved this thing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This was my favorite fleece ever. I'm 6'6" and 170 pounds and it was a trim fit that was still long enough in the torso and arms. I was warm and it layered great. Sadly I left on a bear box in camp 4 by mistake. I have tried to replace it with cheaper fleeces but nothing lives up to my old R1. So I will be buying another one

perfect fleece

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

very versatile piece of clothing. works great for a warmer layer on cold climbing days, or just something to throw on around camp. soft, durable, and breathable. the chest zip dumps heat extremely well. 5'10'' 170lbs. medium fits just slightly loose, but i dont mind since i typically put it on over other layers.

Paintbrush red is actually dark orange

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I'm a Patagonia lover and alteady own the R1 jacket in black. I wanted a red one so I bought the pullover in "piantbrush red." My only complaint is the color. The color is actually dark orange and nothing close to red. This one should have a different color name such as old pumkin orange or dirty cal- trans orange. It's still a great fleece with all the Patagonia quality.

2nd favorite fleece

This is a close second to my arcteryx delta lt zips. It isn't as warm as the arcteryx. But it breaths very nice. The wind cuts right through this, so it definitely needs a shell during windy, cold conditions. I love the waffled interior. It feels very nice agains the skin. Under a shell it is very warm. Colors are nice, as bright is they way I roll. It fits pretty slim too. I am 6'1", 155 pounds and the medium fits me nice and trim. Awesome piece, but the arcteryx delta lt is my fave.

My most-used piece of gear

I've had a black L R1 for three years. Comes with me on every trip, unless it's the absolute middle of summer. Lives up to the hype: comfortable, breathable, well-cut and warm.

Best Fleece Ever Made

This is my favorite piece of technical clothing. The fit and feel combined with the temperature regulation is simply unmatched. I don't EVER go on a ski tour without it. From single digit temps, all the way to 40+ during the winter, this thing keeps me warm / not overheating. I don't know how they did it! Im 6ft 183 and the Large fits perfect. Room for a layer underneath with no problem. Get it, you wont be disappointed. Even if you are, Backcountry will take it back 24/7/365 no questions asked.

Unicorns licking you.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the most comfortable and soft fleece I've ever worn in my life. If you throw a windbreaker or a rain jacket over this bad boy, it will keep you very warm in high 30 through 40 degree weather. It feels like unicorns licking you all over. My go to fleece, easily replaced my old North Face fleece (:

Can you say amazing?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great piece, wear it almost daily, indoors and out. Breathes well and perfect warmth for a mid layer. 6'1" and 195lbs, L fits well. 1/4 zip is the way to go. Only thing I dislike about this fleece is having to take it off to wash it. Wish I had bought a lifetime supply of the balsam green when it was in stock.

near-perfect midlayer

What's not to like? Fit is good - close but not confining. This is an improvement over the R1 I bought a few years ago, which fit like a condom. I'm 6'1", 200 lb, wearing a Large. Thickness is near optimal for a midlayer. Fleece manages to pack away pretty nicely. Dries quickly. Sleeve length is good for someone like me with ape-ish arms. Useful chest pocket. Good torso length. Excellent collar fit; very comfortable.

Nice layer over a light base for winter climbing, snowshoeing. Nice to have in the pack as an extra layer in case I didn't guess the temperatures correctly.

No brainer laying piece

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My R1 is one of my favorite tech pieces. I use it for skiing, working out and around town. It has been super durable, and keeps me warm, whether skiing Tahoe or Utah. Also, while technical, it works well for the local coffee shop (will sometimes rock a button down shirt underneath). In general, this is a must have layering piece. As for sizing, I wear a medium (am 5ft 7in and 140lbs), and straddle the small/medium line w/ Patagonia.

Perfect

I live in central Florida and use this most of the "winter." I have worn it casually, to the office, and on hikes in Florida, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Planning to ski in it in February.

Description doesn't lie

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I use this as my mid-layer and the Stoic Merino 200 Crew - Long Sleeve as a base-layer. The combination is warm and has worked very well. The pullover is very soft and comfortable and I love the small zipping breast pocket for storing my cell phone while skiing.

Classic layer

The R1 pullover is a classic layer for alpine climbing, providing serious mid-layer warmth and the half zip cuts unnecessary bulk and weight. The R1 does have an updated fit with an angled center zipper, leaving one side of the collar longer than the other. This is a great feature to keep the zipper off your chin in the mountains, but does look slightly irregular when in casual use.
