Description

An ideal layer for just about everything.

Whether it’s next to your skin or sandwiches between your shell and baselayer, The Patagonia Men’s R1 Fleece Pullover does the job for everything from desert crack climbing to summer backpacking trips, to frigid backcountry ski days. The Polartec Power Dry fleece features a grid backing that helps channel heat and wick moisture, and the deep front zip dumps excess heat on strenuous pitches or long skin tracks. When you’ve beat your R1 to tatters, send it back to Patagonia for recycling in the Common Threads Program.

Hi ---

Any real difference(s) between the 2009 model of the R1 and the latest (2010) model. Thanks.

What's the back length (including or excluding the collar) of the size medium. I'm 6'2" but quite slim. I own one of these from 2004 and it is a bit short. Hopefully the current model is a bit longer?

Responded on

I can work on getting the measurement for you, but at 6'2" I would say that you'd need to go size large for sure.

Best midweight out there

I live in my r1 in cooler weather. I've dragged it halfway around the world, worn it to scrape up gut wrenching offwidths, and when it was new i even wore it to the first date i had in 5 years. It's still going strong but it will die someday and then i will just recycle it. Yeah patagonia!

Incredibly Versatile, Well-made Pullover

I have now owned 3 of these pullovers and wear one most days. (Although I now wear the Better Sweater Pullover during the schoolweek or at home.) I would highly recommend this fleece for almost any activity from hiking/backpacking to climbing. It is highly breathable and works well as a light midlayer. It is also surprisingly warm under a shell. Possibly my favorite piece of clothing I own.

Awesome mid-layer

I wear this as a mid-layer over a lightweight merino wool top and it does an awesome job of temp regulation. I’ve worn it skiing in temp ranges from single digits to upper 30’s and felt comfy the whole time. The weight was much lighter than I expected, which was nice surprise since I was not sure if this would be too bulky as a mid-layer. The size is pretty true. I picked up a large and an extra-large to see where the best fit would be. I’m 6’2, 220 and the large was okay in the arm length, but tight across the chest and a little short in overall length. The extra-large is on par with other XL’s from Patagonia. Great layer all around.

All Around Awesome

This fleece is magic. I wear it alone and manage to stay warm on some pretty frigid trail runs. Worn over some capilene and under a shell skiing in 30 degrees is pretty comfortable. Plus, the waffle pattern and fabric combination is amazing. I've been poured on while simultaneously running and sweating, but this wicks like you wouldn't imagine and leaves me feeling nice. Running, skiing, backpacking, climbing, you name it, this piece works great. The smooth outer facing means layers slide over it easily. It's so light, works great as a base or mid-layer (even standalone outerlayer), and is great insulation for most situations!

No light weight

I love it!! Warm, thin, love the chest pocket. I wear all the time at work and play....I have few of them. I live in Colorado and it is the perfect weight for cool days and a perfect mid weight layer under a shell!

Warm and Dry

The R1 top is a great layering piece or worn on it's own while skinning or climbing. Really warm and feels dry even when wet because of the waffle pattern. Really, how can you go wrong with Patagonia?

The Finest Ever

You name the piece of Patagonia clothing that has been made and I have owned it. In some cases owned a bunch of a single design. THIS IS THE BEST I have ever worn. Most comfortable and most warmth for the weight. I only own one and waiting for it to be washed takes all my patience

I'm pretty confused about what size to get. I'm 5'9" 160lbs - smallish build. A Patagonia capilene 4 zip neck large fits me great - but an r4 jacket sized large is a little big. The reviewers here and at patagonia.com give spotty information. Can anyone help?

Responded on

I think you'll be good in a medium R1 Pullover, large would be ok, but might be a little loose.

Responded on

I am 5'9" and 170. A medium fits well...not too tight.

Awesome

this is a great all around fleece. It is always in my layering set up. great for hiking. i like how it clings to your body, it also dosen't bunch up above ur harness when your climbing

Awesome

The temperature range of this shirt is amazing. It breathes so well when I'm sweating and keeps my warm when its getting chilly. Sharpest looking fleece out there as well.

Great piece. Perfect for cold weather stand alone over a polypro T-shirt or over a capilene 4 for the really frigid days. The length of it is great as well especially if you wearing pants with suspenders.

Well, what can I say..another fine piece of gear from Patagonia. I enjoy how you can wear it as a warming layer that breathes while you perspire! I'm the kind of person who sweats when its 20 degrees out when I'm ascending a peak and taxing myself. I def. enjoy the grid like pattern and the chest pocket, great piece of gear! I recommend it, but the Patagonia price always kicks you in the ass!

An amazingly versatile layer

This is probably one of my all time favorite pieces of clothing. It is useful for a wide variety of situations. Works great under a softshell, or on its own on a chilly autumn day. The fit of the R1 is great. I'm 145 and 5'11 and the medium fit me perfectly.

This fleece does everything it should, keeps you warm and wicks moisture to help keep you dry. You won't regret buying one... or several.
