    Warmth regulator.

Everyone's peak looks different—calculus final, half-marathon, first 5.10 climb, hike the PCT, pick up the kids on time. The Patagonia Women's R1 Fleece Hooded Pullover can help you cross your own personal finish line comfortably—and it will be there for future accomplishments as well. It's been updated this year with a Polartec Power Grid fabric, which features a raised grid pattern that traps heat. This allowed Patagonia to make the R1 lighter and more breathable than before, while ensuring it keeps you just as warm and still offers the same outstanding stretch and durability. Thumbholes provide your thumbs a place to rest while preventing the sleeves from sneaking up your arms. When the wind kicks up, throw a layer over this hoodie, and never miss a beat as you reach your personal summit.

    Great design, short arms

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size

I returned this product because the sleeves/thumbholes were too short, and a bigger size would have been too boxy. I have long arms. The R1 is great in so many ways - lightweight but warm, breathable, and I LOVE the hood and the face coverage features on it, including the extra-soft zipper covers. They've really thought of everything. Ultimately, I decided I want something that I can have my thumbs through the thumbholes while climbing if necessary, or belaying, or putting on a jacket - and this was just too tight.

    Great Material, Infuriatingly Short Arms

    • Size Bought: Medium

The R1 is my go-to layer for highly aerobic outdoor activities in cold temps, whether it's charging up a skin track or climbing a couple of blustery pitches after work. Oh, and really aggressive lounging/snacking activities apres-ski. The soft, waffly material will keep you cozy and comfy warm, but can dump excess heat when you start moving.

The 3/4 zip feature is fabulous if you'll be layering and de-layering while wearing a helmet or hat-- I can easily take it on or off while wearing my POC Receptor Helmet or BD Vector Helmet when climbing or skiing. It serves the additional purpose of allowing you to thoroughly ventilate your torso if you start overheating. Some people have qualms about the extra long zipper, but if you're using it for the purpose of high-output alpine activities, I believe the design reflects user needs and offers great benefits for keeping cool and quick layer transitions.

However, as a fairly tall and gangly armed person (read my reviews and you'll notice this is a common theme), there is one MAJOR CON: the damn arms on this pullover are WAY short in comparison to the length and width of the body. Especially if I'm wearing a this with gloves or spending time at cold belays, thumb holes are a must have for me. If I wear the thumb holes on this for longer than 5 or 10 minutes, the loop starts digging in between my thumb and index finger to the point of being unbearable (yes, I know how melodramatic this sounds, and I don't care). The torso on the size medium is already a bit loose, and if I size up to a large, the sleeves fit better (not perfectly) but I'm swimming in the body. For reference, I am 5'9", have a 5'10"ish wingspan, and weigh between 130-140lbs.

The fit is distinctly baggier than in years past. I don't think my body type is THAT abnormal, but it seems like this piece would only get a five star rating from me if I could sew size large arms on to a size small or medium hoody.

Overall, I LOVE the material and the design idea of the R1 hoody, but I wish I could get the fit dialed better.

Zoe, your review was extremely helpful for me! As a 135 lb., 6' tall female, I share your struggle - finding slim apparel with long enough sleeves is next to impossible. However, your description/photo confirmed that a medium will indeed be my best bet, even if it's not quite a perfect fit. Thanks!

    Ladies Love It

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I bought this as a gift for my fiance and she almost never takes it off. Whether she's wearing it on a hike, with her sweats, or our running errands, it always looks great, performs well, and is super comfortable.
She's got the Howling Turquoise color and has gotten several comments on how good the color scheme looks.
I see other people have commented on the high zip, which has been the tradition on all R1s hoodies for a while. Although the zipper isn't offset as in past years, it doesn't seem to bother her at all.
The one thing that's interesting is the 3/4 zipper. It's sort of an impractical design, because I'm not sure of any situation where you would wear something unzipped 3/4 of the way down. Maybe a half zip or full zip would suit more people.
All in all, it's a really great piece and I'd highly recommend it!

    Returned

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XL

Just to be clear I've been a Patagonia fan for decades. I'm an XL normally and in no way unusual in my sizing. Unfortunately I returned it for several reasons. It's huge, way too long and the zipper was too long, i.e. Do I really need a zipper that goes to my belly button? And the zipper shield on the inside is way overbuilt and thick. Waited a long time to get one and very disappointed. In contrast I also ordered a Houdini pullover in the same size and I could barely get it on. Too small. Patagonia I love your products quality but can we PLEASE see some consistency in your womens sizing?

    Lightweight and warm

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

This pullover is super lightweight and warm. The fit and material are nice. Although the full face zip isn't as cozy or comfortable as I wanted it to be.

    3 Items in One!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

I love love the women's Patagonia R1 Fleece Hooded Pullover for many reasons (below) and highly recommend it!

First, the obvious reasons of Patagonia quality, construction and company values. Love them all.

Second, the benefits of having three items in one: a pullover fleece, a neck gaiter and a hat. The 'scuba' looking hood acts as (at least in non-sub 10 temps) as a neck gaiter and a hat saving me from having to bring multiple items on a hike. When it is super chilly, I'll put a fleece beenie on under the hood and also pull up the hood on my outer shell to stay toasty warm.

Third, easy temperature regulation as temperatures rise/fall throughout the day by just popping the hood down vs. pulling a neck gaiter or hat on/off and having to stash away in your pack. I also have a strange claustrophobia thing about neck-gaiters (it can feel mildly choking or suffocating to have one on) so not having to wear one above 10-20 degree weather is awesome. The low-cut front zipper also really helps to cool you down fast if you need to.

I wear it hiking, wash it after each wear and it's held up great. I don't dry it due to its form-fitting shape (and trying to save energy). While it is form-fitting, I have found if you pull/stretch it a bit, it has give without getting too stretched or floppy so if it hugs in places, you can loosen it as needed.

FINALLY - the R1 for women!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

Okay so I have pined after this piece for awhile. And sadly, I don't fit into the men's XS. So when these came out last year I was ELATED. I bought one as soon as I could.

The R1 has all of the great technologies of the R1 jacket and pullover but with the extra awesomeness of the hood and thumb holes.

I usually buy an XS in the R1 series but opted for the Small as I found that they run a little more snug than the other R1 options do.

So - it wicks well, dries well, washes well keeps me warm well and gets stinky just the way I like it. I suggest the R1 to anyone who will listen to me.

It's pretty much the perfect base and mid layer for me! The hood definitely is fitted. Fits well under virtually anything. And makes you look a little like a scuba diver.

FINALLY - the R1 for women!

Sizing not what I was expecting.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

I talked to a friend of mine who bought the same top. She had the same thought. The size I got fit. BUT one size up would have been a bit better. Still love it and use it as a baselayer for the most part. Totally recommend.

    Warm baselayer for the win

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This is definitely my favorite patagonia baselayer. It's incredibly warm without the bulk. The offset zipper is a great feature and when it's really cold I'll pull the hood up under my helmet - it's bit snug, but I sized my helmet to fit without a hat or hood - and zip up the collar all the way up and pair it with the Patagonia Nano-Puff under my Gore-Tex Shell for some serious warmth.

Like everything else patagonia, the construction is stellar and this is definitely an investment that will last you SEVERAL seasons.

Fit is slim and long, so if you plan on layering underneath this you'll want to size up. If you wear it over just a t-shirt or tank, stick with your normal size.

    Good technical fleece

Thin, but warm. The R1 is great on its own in the spring and fall and is a perfect layer in the winter. I've used it hiking, running, and climbing. It has a slim fit--a long sleeve tee fits perfect underneath, but a sweater would not. The fabric is sleek, but the fabric on the palm is starting to show a little wear. I also have to be careful when climbing on southern sandstone because it has a sandpaper quality that will shred any fabric. The balaclava is designed really well--the angled zipper keeps it from pressing on the bridge of the nose. The only thing I wished it had is two side hand pockets. It's also pricy, but for its intended purpose, it's great.
