Not much of a short guy, but...

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 34 x 12

I haven't been too big on shorts since I turned twelve, but I must say these shorts are pretty killer. They're light, stretchy, and super comfortable to hike in and just kick around camp in. I'm a pretty tall dude (6'3") so I went with the 12 inch inseam, which sits about mid-knee on me. I wouldn't go much shorter, unless I was really wanting to put my pasty white thighs on full display.

    Wanna love these...

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 32x10

Actually, I do love the fabric and look. They stretch enough to have some 'give' and they're light weight. I also like that I have the option of a 10" or 12" inseam. However, based on customer reviews and Patagonia's description of fit, I got the size I would normally buy in other pants/shorts. Big mistake. I could barely get them over my hips. Once I did, they were extremely 'form' fitting.

Edit: Trying a size larger. Still love the fabric and style.

    The Second Best Shorts Ever

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I really like the Quandary Shorts and own several pair. They are the best shorts ever second only to Patagonia's now discontinued Rock Craft Shorts.

These shorts fit. They are lightweight. They dry quickly. They wear like iron. I have pair that have seen dozens of washings that look brand new.

They are slightly inferior to the Rock Craft Shorts in a couple of ways, though. The Rock Craft has better pockets, both front and back. The front pockets feel better and the back pockets, with the little flap, hold things more securely. The side pocket on the RC short is also larger and cut on an angle to it works better. I use it on both for my wallet because I hate to sit on it and the RC is just better. There's also no need for the little Levis coin pocket. I've never used it. Does anyone? The fabric is also slightly heavier than the Rock Craft Shorts. Since I live in the desert I appreciate a lighter fabric and since the fabric is extremely durable the extra weight doesn't help much. I will say that the button on this short is far superior to the RC button. The RC buttons never were great with the weird snap button on the first model and the basic four hole button on the next version. The solid webbing button is this is a great button. Patagonia should use this for all their shorts.

I love these shorts and if they used the superior pockets from the Rock Craft it would be the perfect short. I have a pair in every color and look forward to them producing them in Navy Blue so I can wear it as a uniform short. I pretty much wear either these or the Rock Craft Shorts every day.

Too similar to Wavefarer but still great

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 34"

Bought these thinking they'd be a bit more rugged than the Patagonia Wavefarers, but I was wrong. Still an awesome pair of shorts, though a little on the thin side for anything where you might be scraping against lots of jagged rocks. The cut is perfect, color could be a bit darker. We'll see how well they hold up to backpacking this summer!

Lightweight nylon is super stretchy and doesn't bag down when hiking up steep inclines. One complaint is that the pockets are a bit small, but then again, I don't hike much with stuff in there.

Too similar to Wavefarer but still great

    Boston Basin's marmots love it

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After several years of approaches, bush whacking, rock climbing and even some summer snow marching, my trusty short's life came to a curious end. Back to camp from Mt. Forbidden (North Cascades), I found the shorts (left on a rock to dry) not just ripped off but with large patches missing. My friend's non Patagonia apparel lying aside was untouched… Since the only life form in Boston Basin capable of the feat is the marmot, we could only presume I somehow have offended the local community. In addition, they must have found the fabric suitable to den lining. Needless to say I have ordered a replacement right away. Actually two, of different colours, since I have plans for another couple climbs starting Boston Basin… :)

Great, if they stock your size.

    • Fit: True to size

Just a note, and an appeal to Backcountry... I am not a 32 or a 34. I ordered two pair of the 34 hoping they'd suffice. They didn't--too big. Ended up sending them back and ordering size 33 from a different vendor. They fit perfectly. I recommend you order your size in these fantastic shorts. If Backcountry doesn't stock your size, order them somewhere else.

    great short

These shorts are awesome - a cool balance of an every day short, and something a little more technical. The fabric stretches well and dries quickly so it's a great hiking/biking short. But they still look sharp enough to wear every day. I feel like they run spot on for sizing, and have held up well even with a fair amount of abuse so far this year.

They feel great and wear great.

I'm a size 30-32 waist and got the 32x10 and depending on the day I usually go with a belt to keep them where I want them. Maybe a 30x10 would have been perfect, actually I'll buy another just to be sure :)

No complaints, they are a quality pair of shorts, well made and the pockets are deep and will hold your essentials safely.

I have the previous years version which aren't a slim fit and they fit great. Just wondering if the leg openings will fit my 24" circumference quads on a waist size 36?
