    My favorite climbing pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 33/short

I might have a pant problem. I have a pair of all the major brands and styles (Prana Zion, Brion, Marmot Arch to name a few) and these are my favorite overall. They are pretty lightweight, so when things get chilly, I opt for different ones, but these are great in all other cases. The fit slimmer through the leg than other styles, but are not too tight through the thigh, which is a must for my thunder thighs. Also (and most importantly) chalk dusts right off! I will likely end up buying some more pairs.

    Favorite Pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 34 Short

These pants fit well, dry fast, and hold up to lots of abuse. I've had my first pair for 4 years and they've been my go to for all backpacking trips, which include lots of bushwhacking, and off trail adventure.
They have a slimming fit, and seem true to size

    Great pants!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

What could be better than a pair of pants that are super comfy in the Cascade backcountry and in chasing kids around town. Buy them, you won't regret it.

Best "adventure" pants that I own

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 32

I bought these on sale & decided to order other colors after a few weeks. Lightweight and cool for warm(er) days with the typical Patagonia quality. These may be the most comfortable pants I own. You'll also get a lot of compliments, if that means anything to you.

    too small, too loose

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 30

I felt these fit a lot smaller in the waist than my other pants the same size (30). They were also too loose for what I was looking for. I wish Patagonia would make this same thing with a tapered leg!

I wish I had more pairs of these pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

These pants are absolutely awesome for all sorts of situations. I love wearing them when I go out for long multi-pitch climbs, just hanging around the house, going out with friends, or anywhere in between. They fit incredibly well, are lightweight and super comfortable! The zipper pocket is just the icing on the cake. Super handy and representative of the overall quality Patagonia offers in their pants.

    Blue slightly tighter than tan

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 32 Short

Absolutely love these pants. I bought them mainly for office work slacks, but wear them casually out of work. Glass blue pants purchased after tan were slightly tighter in the waist, seat and rise. The 32 Short tans fit my 173 pound 5'8" frame perfectly. Very comfortable and have plenty of give for an active person. Really happy with my purchase. This was my first Patagonia product and won't be my last.

    Climbing Galore

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium Regular

I was skeptical at first that these pants would hold up on the granite of Yosemite and the other places I climb but was very impressed. I have had several pairs of BD Castleton pants with the double knee and they wear out faster than I would like. The Nylon and Spandex hold together very well and I have yet to have any issues with tears or rubbing and I have put at least 100 pitches of crack climbing on these pants already. I could also wear these out and look stylish, or have worn them 20 days in a row and be living in my van and nobody would know!

    That Fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 30

I love the fit of the Quandary pant - finally a technical fabric pant with a slimmer fit! I did, however, return the pair I originally ordered because the blue ones totally look like hospital scrubs. I just picked up the Tan color and I'm way happier.

    Business casual

Loving these pants. I like a straighter fit, not necessarily slim, and these fit the bill. I'm 5-11" and 180 and a 32" waist fits snug enough not to need a belt, but enough that I can get a shirt tucked in if I needed to. I worked out with them this morning and they handled everything I could throw at them. Durable, lots of movement and good looking - what more can you ask?

      Great quality!!!

I gave this as a gift. After reading all the reviews, I decided to buy this pair. They are super comfortable and stretchy, great for hiking! It's also very breathable. The fit is great! I ordered 33 long, the gift recipient is 6'2" and 188 lbs.

        Great quality!!!

        Love Love Love

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size

As soon as I pulled these suckers out of the box I was so stoked! They just looked great, the color was exactly as shown, the quality of and feel of the material was sweet, and I love the optional sizing for these pants. I am 6 foot 1 and 155 pounds and ordered the 33 waist size and short inseam. The length is perfect for where I like my pants to fall, and as expected the waist is a bit big (I can wear a 29-30), but my upper legs areas usually feel constricted in smaller waist sizes. Anyway, once I put these on they felt awesome, the pockets are nice, not to high, not to low, they are correct size and the pants material feels great against your leg. The following day I took them upto in to some 30-40 degree wet, rainy, snowy weather to test these things out (and well show them off). They were a bit cold sitting around when temps were hovering around freezing, but they are a pretty fairly thin pant. As soon as your body starts generating the pants warm up and kicks out the chilled feeling on your legs. My friend and I were hiking around, climbing on rocks, jumping around and being basically goons for the entire day... And wow, these pants are so comfortable no matter what awkward or weird position you are in, the fabric stretches giving no feeling of tension or restriction in the pants materials. The best part though, was how the responded to the wet condition... Wether I was sitting down on my butt in the snow, down on my knees taking pictures or making snow angels, I never got wet or had the feeling of these pants retaining any dampness. Once I got up from the ground on one occasion, I felt the pants where my knees are, wet from being on the snow, but completely dry on the interior of the pants! 5 minutes later, once back in my van, the pants had already dried on the exterior! Also, I did get some mud on the knee region of these pants and the mud and gunk, dirt, whatever you get on there just wipes right off! Really hope this helps with anyone trying to buy these pants, and please, if you have any questions feel free to ask! Can't wait to get more pairs of these puppies!

        Cody,
How do yours fit in the waist with sizing up? I did the same because I didn't want them to be too restrictive in upper thigh also. I am now a 32" waist but ordered a 33". The waist is slightly large but they seem to fit well in thighs legs. How do yours fit in the waist? What do you think, should I stick with the 33" waist? I am thinking a 32" waist will be too restrictive in upper thighs.
        Best,
        Albert

        Perfect Fit!

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: 32S

I wanted some comfy travel pants for long plane rides and something that could be worn for hiking and other outdoor activities as well. I just received these and they feel perfect. I'm 5'6", 155 lbs with 31" waist and ordered the 32S which turns out to be 32x30. These are a perfect straight leg fit and if you normally wear a 31x30 or 32x30 in jeans, these are perfect. They are super comfortable and seem like they'll be very durable also.

        Best Adventure Pants Out There

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size

These are the best adventure pants I've tried! They really fit great (I'm rather slim) and have lots of stretch and ability for movement. I've climbed and bouldered in them, stretching to reach the foot holds with no hinderance from them at all. They are also very light weight, but also block wind well when I paraglide in them. They also breathe well, so hiking in them is a great choice, also because you won't feel restricted in any way.

Cons: they're thin, and thus not warm (which is fine by me), and they won't stop you from getting scrapped by rocks through the pants-(aka. they won't protect you like jeans will) although they held up great, and no signs of wear appeared.

All around great pants! You can't go wrong!

        Quandary Versus the Zion

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Large

So last year I was in search of new climbing pants. Everyone says Prana Stretch Zion, so I went with those. Loved them, bought 4 pairs. Then I spoke with our Patagonia rep, and he told me to try out the Quandary. Who cant use another pair of pants right? Got these and here is my take on them versus the Zion.

They fit more true to size than my Zion's. The Large is truly a large, meaning that every other pant I have is a large for a 34" waist. These dont have a cinch strap on them, so I was worried as I always have to use the cinch strap on the Zions to keep them up. These fit perfect no belt or cinch strap necessary if you are a 34" waist then the large is the size for you.

As far as stretch goes, they are just as stretchy if not more than the Zion, this is key for a climbing pant.

Durability is the same as Zion's. I havent used them all year so its truly hard to make that assessment but, they didnt rip through a recent off-width adventure.

So why these over Zion's? I wouldnt say go with these over or under the Zion's to be honest, they are just slightly different. I like that I dont have to keep cinching them down, they just fit me perfect as does all Patagonia gear. I am bigger/boxier so this is the brand for me. The other big take away is that they are lighter. Not by much but, the Zion's are .9 oz and the Quandary's are .6 oz. This means on hotter days I will definitely wear the Quandary's, especially in the desert. I have found the Zion's to be a bit too thick on days where its really hot and the Quandary fills that void.

I do have to admit I like the thigh pocket a bit more on these. There is only one zipper but, I havent found a need to really NEED the second zipper you get on the Zion's, so to me its just less bulk and complications with forgetting to zip up that second option on the Zion's.

Ive never had to go through Prana for a warranty claim. ALMOST for a pair of women's pants my girlfriend got but, we just sewed the buttons back on and it was all good. What I do know about Patagonia is that they are hands down the best to work with on warranty/ repairs. Its a "no argument, we'll take care of you" experience which I have come to love and havent really found anywhere else in the industry.

Side note that might not mean anything to you as a consumer but, when my climbing partner/mentor picked me up he was also wearing a pair of old Quandary's. If he likes them and uses them then they gotta be great in my mind! We were twinsies on this climb, same pant, same color!

If you have anymore questions feel free to send me an email or call!

        Quandary Versus the Zion

Bill - How's the thigh pocket opening's size on the Quandary? I noticed that the thigh pocket on the Zion (whether attacking it from the top or side) is almost too small for me to fit my hand inside. I guess I may have freak hands according to PrAna's design team... #Slap

        I love these pants!!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size

This past summer I spent 6 weeks doing archaeological survey work for the Bureau of Land Management in AZ/UT. We were working mostly in desert locations where temperatures reached 100-115F almost everyday! Work involved walk/hiking 6-8 miles everyday in an effort to record unknown archaeological sites on BLM land.

Anyway, I put these pants through the wringer quite literally! I guess its a dry heat but still these pants were remarkable cool! Plus they're still in great shape. I was expecting the fabric to tear since we were moving through some incredibly overgrown terrain at times but they've held up remarkably well. Right now I have 3 pairs of pants and 5-6 pairs of shorts all are fantastic. For long distance hiking these would be great they pack down to almost nothing. I've also worn the shorts while hiking some incredibly muddy trails in Hawaii! Surprisingly the mud washed right out! I have clothes that are completely ruined by Hawaii mud but these Patagonia pants/shorts are stain free.

        I love these pants!!

Is the material more like soft-shell or just nylon? The description mentions stretch which makes them sounds soft-shellish

I'm looking for a durable pair of pants that dry (relatively) quickly. Any word on how fast these dry? I'll be fishing, hiking through rivers, and rafting - getting wet is a given. But I like to wake up to dry pants.
