The three-layer waterproof breathable construction of the Patagonia Men’s Primo Jacket gives you near bombproof protection for the deepest, sickest days of winter. This streamlined shell features clean looks and essential winter features like a zip-out powder skirt, helmet-compatible hood, and an interior pass window. Interior webbing loops attach to any Patagonia ski pants to keep the jacket from riding up, and an internal insulated media pocket lets you keep the psyche music flowing.

Bottom Line: The name says it all.

Primo, an apt name

An excellent version of what so many companies have to offer; the 3 layer hard shell jacket. What stands out on Patagonia's version is the construction and fit which results in one of the lightest on the market and unrestricted movement. The waterproofing is also top notch keeping you warm and dry in the harshest of conditions. Large hood is helmet compatible so braving the wind is pleasant. The primo pant is a great pairing and the powder skirt can be fastened to any patagonia pant. Super durable it has survived many high speed brushes with branches, whipets, trees and death. Layer your puffy jacket underneath to create and unstoppable system in the coldest weather. Love this jacket.

Waterproof out the wazu

I am amazed. I skied this weekend and it rained for four hours. this was between rain and frozen rain. The jacket looked soaked but I got to the car and my base layers were dry as a bone.
Sizing. I'm 5'10 160 Athletically built but I wouldn't say top heavy. I got a large because I like having mobility to twist, turn, flip, and store. The one feature I do not like is the powder skirt. It does not stay in place that well. The hood fits over my helmet perfectly. The collar is big but nice when it is zipped. Some what goofy when unzipped but not enough for me to care. Someone mentioned in their own post about the sizes being dis-proportional but the waist can be cinched.
Function-The zippers keep the elements out but they keep me out sometimes. I know I'm being picky but they are tight because of their fully taped quality.
The chest pocket has insulation for your music as well. I thought this was sweet because my ipod use to freeze up on me.

Bottom line this jacket withstands water like a champ, takes a beating, is comfy minus the pow skirt (avoided by using Patagonia pants(i don't have a pair))

This hood is not stowable, however you can minimize flapping by cinching the hood adjustments down a bit.

Patagonia Primo

Quality 4 stars, sizing 1 star. I'm a Patagonia fan. All my base and mid layers are Pat's so I was pretty disappointed with the jacket sizing. on the Primo and Powder Bowl jackets. I consider myself athletic build at 5'8", 42in chest, 16.5 neck, 31in waist and 170lbs. For some reason Patagonia makes their jackets narrow on top with smaller arm holes but huge in the waist area. The Med fit great in the waist but way too tight in the shoulders and arms. I couldn't get more then a thin baselayer underneath. The large fit great in the shoulders but was a tent in the waist area and the sleeves way too long. I don't understand how they size their jackets. The Primo is 3 ply but I was surprised by the how thin and light it was. It was definitely high quality materials and construction but it fit me very poorly. I actually went to Backcountry's warehouse in Salt Lake City (Ski trip) and exchanged it for a Cloudveil 3L Gortex. Backcountrys customer service is awesome! I tried on many different jackets and the Marmots and Cloudveils were generally more athletic fitting. The size large Cloudveil fit great around the waist.

Anyone have this jacket and want to fill me in on sizing/quality/amazingness?

Anyone have this jacket and want to fill me in on sizing/quality/amazingness? I'm coming from the arcteryx gamma mx hoody (softshell) and need to get a new piece for the winter. Does this run a bit small? I'm between a M and a L in the Gamma MX and want to get my purchase right on the first try. Thanks!

JCN, the Primo Jacket ranks high on the amazingness scale. I've got a large in the green oasis color and I am super stoked on it. Bomber construction, great features, and a killer fit. It's truly a regular fit, enough room to layer, but not too baggy. I'd base your sizing decision on how much you want to layer underneath and how loosely you like your jackets too fit. I don't layer a ton, but like a slightly looser fit so I'm in a large. go for it, you'll be stoked for sure.

Worth the $$$

I got it last fall as a replacement for my Mountain Hardwear Hairpin Jacket and couldn't be happier. I have the Large in Red (easier to be seen on the mountain) and I'm 5'11 with 44 inch chest and it fits great with a insulating and base layer underneath. It's a bit long but the cinch at the bottom fixes that in short order.

LOTS of features and I was very happy with this on both cold and warm days because of the venting capabilities. It doesn't feel as "bomber" as my Arc'Teryx Beta AR but seems great for quality so far.

Based on my past experience with Patagonia if it doesn't live up to their hype they'll replace or repair it for free...
