Ski big peaks in epic conditions with the Patagonia Men's Primo Down Jacket. As Patagonia's warmest three-layer shell jacket, the Primo shines when the weather doesn't. The Primo Down features an H2No waterproof barrier sandwiched between a tough 80D nylon shell and fluffy 700-fill down, for toasty warmth that keeps the elements out. Welded seams and a DWR coating increase weather protection, while the lightly-insulated, three-way adjustable hood cinches during serious tempests. The Primo's powder skirt features a pass holder and webbing loops that connect to any Patagonia ski and snowboard pants.
Bottom Line: Patagonia's warmest shell jacket for foul-weather descents.
I did alot of research on this jacket. Thanks Backcountry.com. Tried it on and it was tight in the arm pits and arm length. I am 6'4 225lbs. Returned it for a Patagonia insulated Powder Bowl.
I have 3 other medium sized Patagonia jackets which fit fine but this one is slightly tight in the arm pits with a thin shirt on but otherwise ok, If I go to a large will it be too big. I am 5'9" and 160lbs.
Hey there, sorry about the sizing confusion, and the pits being too tight in the medium. I think a large would be fine for you, just a little looser, and a touch long in the arms, but with resort skiing jacket like this, those are things that most seem to not mind. Hopefully that helps, and hope you're able to find a Primo Down that fits well.

Can someone help me with the size? I am 5'10", weigh 175 with a chest measurement of 42" and sleeve length about 33". I bought the Patagonia insulated Powder Bowl jacket last year in a medium and it fit me perfectly everywhere except in the pits. The pit zips and pit area was too tight with only a baselayer and light fleece underneath. I tried on a Large at a local retailer, but then it was way big around my body and long in the sleeves. I don't know if this Primo Down is cut differently or will fit the same as the Powder Bowl jacket does.
Milwaukeehaze, thanks for your question. Both the Primo Down and Insulated Powder Bowl jacket come from Patagonia's snow line. This being said the feature very similar fit blocks. Regarding the Primo, the insulation package on this jacket is outstanding. You really should only need to wear a next to skin garment and this jacket to be perfectly comfortable in even the coldest temps. Keep that in mind when looking at this jacket versus the Insulated Powder Bowl jacket. Based on your dimensions I would probably go with a size large. I hope this is helpful for you. Pray for snow.
Patagonia has been making bomb proof gear since they started. It is one of the few companies that can actually stand up to what they make, and this jacket is just another one of those jackets that will last for ten years. If you like the new and latest trends in colors and fashion, this jacket is not for you, but if you like stuff that can withstand anything and love to be cozy all day long this is your jacket. What is unique about this jacket is there is a down sweater pretty much sewn into the shell, making it one of the best jackets I have ever owned. I hope to use this jacket for the next ten years, but I would advise to get a shell accompanying this jacket, simply because its too damn hot! So I use my shell Primo for warmer days and trekking, where I use my Primo Down for chilly resort days, or just chilly days period. Simply put, this is the best jacket ever invented.
The Primo Down Jacket is similar in warmth to the Insulated Powder Bowl, but is more comfortable and has a greater temperature range since it's got down as the insulation, so you'll won't overheat as quickly, and it will keep you warmer in the coldest temps. Insulated coats don't breathe incredibly well since there's a layer of insulation between your body and the outer shell, so if breathability is a concern go for the Powder Bowl. If it's between the Primo Down and the Ins Powder Bowl go Primo Down for sure - one of the sweetest ski jackets ever.
Finally got to try out the new jacket and was very pleased. The lifts are not open yet and the huge pit zips worked. Plus, I stayed warm as toast while resting between climbs. The only negative for me besides the cost is that I am not able to operate the pit zips without removing the jacket. I am just not that nimble.
Large for sure. I'm 6'4 180 and wear a large. You might even get away with a medium if you don't want to put much more than a base layer and light fleece under this.
I bought this jacket after investigating all of its features. This jacket is very weatherproof. I do not use it for skiing or mountain climbing. I use it for everyday use in Chicago. The one thing I did notice is that I was expecting it to be very very warm after all the reviews. Well last week it was 10 degrees in Chicago and I was wearing the jacket in the yard while I had the dog out. It was a bit cold, I was confused since I heard how warm this jacket is. I spoke with several people and was told this jacket is made specifically for "technical" use.. ie lots of activity.. So when constantly moving, it does stay very warm. If standing still, you might feel a bit of the chill at lower temps. To solve this issue, I bought The patagonia R3 fleece (breathable fleece). When I put that on as an underlayer to the Primo Down Jacket, everything was awesome and toasty again. So if your not working up a sweat and moving alot, just throw an underlayer on and all is good. This jacket is great. When I am moving around and being active, I definately do not need an underlayer. Great jacket and very stylish.
I'm 6'2 195lbs and I want to make sure I'm getting plenty of coverage with possibly a little room to layer (even though I'm sure you don't need much with this). I generally run XL with winter coats so would XL be a good choice here?
I just received this jacket in the Narwhal Gray and thanks to the advice I received here, the Large fits perfectly. I tried it on with a baselayer and a light fleece and it is PERFECT! Sorry to those looking for a review of use, but I will have to wait a month or two to use it on the slopes and elsewhere in the snow. So far I am impressed with the fit, weight and overall construction.
This jacket deserves the highest of ratings. My super cool wife bought me this for Christmas. I have used it about 15 times on the resort and around town for other things. A day tele-skiing is about as much as I can handle in this jacket because it is so warm. The best part about the jacket is its ability to vent. I love how the fill is separated from the shell to allow air in the back. This is great when the down gets wet or your sweating it out. The separation creates constant air circulating to keep the down dry and preforming to its fullest.
It's not detachable. It's lightly insulated and designed to fit over helmets if necessary. Those using this jacket usually need a hood with such features, so it's not detachable.
After careful consideration and months of research i finally pulled the trigger on this jacket...best gear decision yet!!! 4 days in Breck, jacket kept me warm & dry, was flexible and practical. i am 5"10 170 and the Large is great, Medium was too tight in the arm pits
Not it doesn't. This is Patagonia's top-of-the-line winter activities jacket. It's designed to be warm in extremely cold/wet outdoor endeavors. If the down EVER, does get moist and/or clumpy, the thing has a lifetime warranty, but I VERY seriously doubt that it will EVER be an issue.
I pretty much want it to be disastrously below zero right now just so I can wear this thing. I've worn it with just a t-shirt on underneath and it feel nice, soft, and warm.
I am sure you have all seen this jacket highlighted in just about every outdoor and ski magazine this season as this is Patagonia's flagship jacket. Well I am here to tell you that it does not disappoint! Think Down Sweater sewn into the Powder Bowl Jacket and you are on the right track. If you want a jacket that will keep you toasty warm in the most frigid days on-hill, while still looking totally stylish and having the highest quality waterproofness and breathability, look no further friends....this is it! This jacket has changed the way I think about layering and insulation. Just put it on with a thin baselayer and COLD BE DAMNED!
This jacket is way overpriced. I returned it. I have 4 other size M Patagonia jackets which fit perfectly and the medium Primo Down is tight in the armpits. I am wanting an all in one jacket without the zip in liner. This jacket is ok but whats this fad with waterproof zippers, is this jacket for kayaking? My old north face goretex shell does great at the top of Steamboat in a heavy wet snow white out, I don't need these silly hard to pull waterproof zippers. It does ok in a downpour as well with its normal zippers. The left bicep pocket can't be opened with just your right hand, you have to hold the material very taught with your left somehow and then pull with your right. I have a north face jacket of the 1990's with a zip in down liner. The primo jacket is rated as the same 700 fill as my old north face down liner but sure doesn't seem like it. It is weak on good secure pockets too. Just a big mesh pouch inside with no zipper compared to my old north face with 2 giant zipper pockets you can put some goggles and big gloves in and a zippered inside chest pocket to put a wallet or keys or change. Whats this elastic mesh going to look like after 10 yrs of use, or is it just meant for use for a year or two. The primo has 2 good outside pockets but they are too low and not ergonomic to put your hands in and have them there a while and be comfortable. There is a good outside zippered chest pocket but kind of small and inside another inner zippered pouch for an MP3 player. This jacket is nothing special, there are better jackets out there for much less. They don't make them like they used to.
Love this Jacket...Extremely warm but vents very well for when it warms up in the afternoon. The nylon outer shell is super tough.. had a close call with some pine trees and thought I ripped it for sure but not even a mark. The one down side is the hood does not fit over my Smith Holt helmet but its not that big of a deal. The Audio pocket is well thought out as well ..There is a small zip up pocket inside the left chest pocket which has a headphone access hole so you can have your tunes within easy reach... I'm about 5'8 165lbs I went with a Medium Fits perfectly no need to size up for layering with this jacket as it is all you need other than a base layer.
