I've been really happy with these pants for everyday skiing at the resort. The tough fabric looks great, hangs nicely and stays waterproof. Sizing now accommodates more leg sizes with a short, reg, and long choice for each pant size. Long outside thigh ventilation zips dump heat quickly, pockets are big enough nut not bulky looking, boot cuff skirt is adjustable as is the waist, so you can go without a belt if you get the waist size close enough. I ski enough that I can generally make a pair of pants look pretty mangey in a month or two, but these ones seem to stay cleaner and look nicer for quite a bit longer. I'm 5'11" 175lb and I go with a regular length medium. It's not a park and pipe cut, nor am I sagging these things, but it's a relaxed and comfortable fit.
Expensive, but very functional pants. No real issues at all, but I did buy some suspenders for safety's sake Everyone should have pants like these, if they cost $150 less!

I succeeded in wearing out a set of Patagucci Rubicon pants and since the new sizing for that model doesn't fit me I decided to try the powder bowl. I talked to the Patagonia lady on the phone and she assured me that the powder bowl is every bit the pants that the rubicons are (durability). Well, they are a decent well thought out pant, but aren't really on the same level of durability bomberness that rubicons are. Too bad they only fit short fat people... Thats the nice thing about the powder bowl, you can get it in a variety of inseam and waist sizes. Powder bowls are durable, better than most others, but no the best. The fit is in between slim and regular/loose fitting.
I'd definitely try the Powder Bowl. It is more of a combo between the old primo and the rubicon. The old primo rocked... The PB is a nice option now. Rubicon has excess material--feels like a wider cut.
My husband is about to exchange a pair of Patagonia Primo pants for the Rubicon. He is skinny and 5'10, typically waist of 32. Would you say the Rubicon Medium would not work for him? I was also researching this Powder Bowl pant, and came to the same conclusion that they do not look as beefy. The new Primo pants are nothing compared to their old ones. Thankyou!
When you compare these to the various competition, they hold up pretty well. The Arcteryx pants between $50 and $100 more. They are very comfy and flexible--great for an all-around snow pant. Yes, I also use them sking, but also for shoveling, sledding, building snowmen, you name it. Are they 'perfect' for the BC? No, but they aren't supposed to be. If you are BC touring a lot, you probably own the Gamma MX, or you should. If you ski wherever/whenever you can, and that includes some BC gates and a bit of skinning/hiking, these are the pants for you. The fit is a bit more generous than my drop-seat pants from 15 years ago, but that's the style; they seem a bit slimmer than the Snowshot. They are easily adjustable, which helps.
For those that complain about durability, quality, or a broken zipper, you are crazy. While these don't appear to be as 'tough' as a cordura-style pant like the Rubicon, they tend to function much better while avoiding wear, which is a problem with high-texture fabrics like corudura, which tend to develop wear creases and rough spots wear they rub themselves. You are not going to find a company that stands behind their product better than Patagonia. Bring them back in 15 years with a broken thigh zipper; they fix it for free. Sell them on ebay in 15 years; they will still have value.
I'm thinking of getting this pant in an XL titanium (I'm 6'3" and 220 lbs)and was wondering how true to color the website pics are. The color name suggests something near a light grey, but the pics look pretty white...are they just washed out ? Anyone seen them in real life ?
The Titanium color in the Powder Bowl Pant is definitely more of a grey, and the image above is pretty washed out and not a good representation of the true color.
These pants saw a lot of use last year on casual days skiing, big trips, and weekly as a patroller. The pants kept me dry through some lovely east coast winter rainstorms. The knees held up while spending a lot of time on them tending to patients on east coast ice, which will tear up lesser fabrics. The cargo pockets are great for storing snacks, or medical supplies when patrolling (and skiing with crazy friends).
So if you plan on spending lots of time on your knees - these pants are for you. If you don't - buy 'em anyways, they're bulletproof.
Sizing - I'm an athletic 6' 175lbs and went with a large. Fits good through the hips, but they're a little big in the waist. Medium was just too tight through the hips, but good at the waist. That's why I they get 4 stars instead of 5. They're perfect for anyone that doesn't have big quads.
Finally! After trying several pairs of snow pants (about 6 different kinds) i have found a pair that meet what i was looking for. These are not insulated, though they are made of several layers of fabric. You will need to layer under these. I am 5'9" 130lb 30in waist and a Medium - Short fits me perfect. Not baggy but not tight, i guess a relaxed fit. These pants are very durable, totally wind and water proof. Adjustable gaiters and a adjustable waist make the fit perfect. Total of 6 pockets. Vents on the outside of the legs. I would highly recommend!
The quality of the pants was very good. I just wish the fit was bettter. The combination of the waste size, length, and adjustability was not what I was looking for. Therefore, I returned them and got a pair of North Face pants.
Nice quality pant. Well thought out. Yes, bombproof. Only problem is sizing for me. I'm 5'6" with a 32" waist. Small is too small in the waist and medium is too big in the waist and thighs. Even though I ordered the short length it was still a bit long for me. Pants might also be a bit on the heavy side if you hike for your turns. Wish they would have fit. Went with TNF Freedom pant in size small instead. Hope this helps with sizing questions.
Excellent quality, plenty of pockets, killer fabric, great relatively slim fit. One beef: they're kinda heavy for backcountry. Think I'll stick to using these at the resorts.
I had to send these back to get a better fit, but when I got the right size I was very happy with these. Although the fit is described as regular, I found these a little baggy and got a size smaller for a slightly slimmer streamlined fit. The waist is pretty adjustable so I didn't have a hard time swapping sizes.
I've been really happy with these pants for everyday skiing at the resort. The tough fabric looks great, hangs nicely and stays waterproof. Sizing more...
