Attack the trails like they owe you money when you put on the wind-resistant, paneled Patagonia Nine Trails Jacket. Your body breathes through back, side, and underarm panels that also stretch with your strides through the mountains. As the wind whips up a quick shower, you can pass through it and stay dry with the Nine Trails’ Deluge DWR finish, and when you get back on the road, the reflective logos keep you visible in the fading light. If the weather looks good, fold the Nine Trails into its chest pocket and keep it close-by in case the pass trail is a little blustery.

Bottom Line: When you just feel like running.

Great trail running jacket

The jacket is very warm once you start running. When I run in the low teens, after a few miles I normally unzip a little. I will say this jacket is not really for causal wear. When I am warming up, the fabric is cold to the skin.

Best. Trail running jacket. Ever.

Amazingly, a super-light shell that cuts wind and the chilling fog we get here in the Bay area, but still breathes well enough to not turn into a sauna on punishing trail runs. Shell material is surprisingly quiet for nylon and seems pretty durable–the back panel, less so. But cut really well for cycling or running both, with a nice looong back hem that covers your kidnesy when down on the drops. Sizing and cut are spot on, juuust enough room to fit a mid-weight baselayer, but not baggy at all on the runs. Best of all? NO JANGLY-ASS ZIPPER. The chest pocket is on the inside and secures with velcro, which also eliminates the bouncing key problem. I use this backpacking almost constantly and the breathable back panel is actually pretty nice against the pack–although I question its durability in the long term (also, not thick enough to stop the skeeters). But that's what the iron-clad guarantee is for, right?
