Description

The ten essentials just became eleven.

Originally conceived as a prototype for weight-obsessed alpinists, the Patagonia Men’s Nano Puff Pullover is now a go-to layering piece everywhere from Indian Creek to the Himalaya. This sleek pullover provides maximum warmth in a minimalist design—throw it on at chilly morning belays, then pack it up in its chest pocket and clip it to your harness when you get down to business. The Nano Puff also makes an ideal mid-layer for frigid backcountry ski tours. Patagonia combined a windproof and water-resistant recycled polyester shell with 60 grams of highly compressible PrimaLoft One insulation to give you the most warmth and protection for the lowest weight.
  • 60g PrimaLoft One synthetic insulation for compressible loft even when wet
  • Wind-resistant, water-repellent micro ripstop face fabric for lightweight durability
  • Overlap quilting design prevents cold channels and insulation shift

Good Layering Piece or on it's Own

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

The nano puff is warmer than all but the loftiest of fleece pullovers, but much lighter. The smooth fabric it's made out of makes it easy to slide between layers. The face fabric also offers a good bit of wind resistance on it's own.

It's not meant to be water resistant and it's certainly not. The elastic band around the bottom does a great job of blocking out drafts but can occasionally cause it to ride up. The fabric has stood up pretty well to abuse, so far it only has a few small tears which were easily repaired with Tenacious tape.

In the Bag

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Great synthetic puffy. It is always in my bag. Kayaking, boating, skiing, hiking.. it always comes along. It takes up very little room and adds even less weight, but it is always warm. The first time I wore it was a super rainy overnight paddle trip.. needless to say we were soaked, but the puff kept me super warm. Great layer, and perfect for an emergency layer.

great

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I grabbed the large off SAC 2 years ago. Its great, warm and packs up small. The large takes up the space of about 2 beer cans when packed into the chest pocket. It fits into the cargo pocket on my ski pants once the day warms up. Large fits good, loose but not baggy on me at 6'2" and 200lb.

Good, not my fave

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I like the nano puff quite a bit, and I got it on sale which is another plus. The synthetic insulation will keep me warm when wet. It packs down small, and has cool colors. The reason why I give it 4 stars is the fit. I am not particularly a patagonia body type. Their pieces generally run pretty wide and boxy. This is no exception. What I prefer instead is something like an arcteryx atom hoody. I am definitely an arcteryx body type: tall, skinny, long arms. The atom is a synthetic piece as well, and has fleece lined pockets as an added feature. Nevertheless, the nano puff is still a great piece to have in the gear closet, just not my favorite.

Nice fit. Perfect insulation with or without a shell.

So-So

I felt the Patagonia nano was a so-so jacket. First, the fit isn't slim built friendly, baggy in the middle of the torso. Second, needs more pockets. Third, colors can be a little too goofy.

Great Synthetic Sweatshirt

The Nano Puff has been with me over the past two months during daily dog walks, hikes, and other outdoor trips. It has seen light to moderate rain, wind, and temperatures from mild to cold and has performed like a champ. Weight, warmth-to-weight ratio, and packability are superb. Long-term durability and abrasion resistance have not had substantial tests but my sense is that both should be more than adequate. It's been used as both an outer layer and a mid-layer. Quite comfortable, too.

I was initially wary about the lack of side pockets on this version and whether or not I would enjoy the pullover style. Neither has proved to be an issue. The single chest pocket holds multiple small items, and I have not missed the side pockets. The put-on / take-off is natural and easy.

I rarely spend this kind of money on something unless I'm certain it's going to get a lot of use and give superlative performance. The Nano puff has come through on both counts. If you live in an area where Mother Nature asks you to deal with a wide variety of weather conditions, you will love this thing. I highly recommend it.

Versatile Item

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a very versatile piece of clothing and the second one I have purchased. I wear it daily as a middle layer for alpine skiing in the Adirondacks. I also use it for back country ski trip since it is easy to put on when I stop for a break. I prefer the pullover to the jacket because I don't have to mess with a zipper when my fingers are freezing. The shell is windproof and it slides on and off with ease. It also gets carried in my pack on spring and fall hikes. The PrimaLoft works as well as down and insulates when wet. It's a little pricy but Patagonia's quality is excellent so it should last for many years.

I'm like 6'4 and I know I'm between an XL and XXL and I was just wondering what size I should get? I don't plan on layering it, just for casual use, and I don't like things tight.

Responded on

Tough call man. This Nano is a slighty roomy fit since it's a pullover, and I think you'll have good length in the body and sleeves with either. Kinda of depends on your build - 6'4 and slim - XL. 6'4" and "I could crush you with one hand if I wanted too" - XXL.

Close fitting

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have a 20 year old puff jacket in navy that I love and wear constantly. It is getting a bit worn so I thought I would replace it with a new one when I temporarily misplaced it. The new jacket had much longer arms, much smaller arm holes and was closer fitting than my old one. Not as versatile as an outer layer which is how I usually use it. My old one is also not not quilted. So I returned the new one when my old one turned up on the coat rack! Patagonia does truly last forever.

Works well as an insulating layer

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this pullover to wear on cold days skiing in the White Mountains of NH. It has worked great on single digit and below zero days. It's light weight but under a jacket and over a base layer, it has kept my upper body warm and toasty. The smooth finish allows for freedom of movement as well. Several friends have also bought the Nano Puff pull over after seeing mine and agree that it's great on cold days riding chairlifts.

Tumeric is definitely a bright orange, but not quite as bright as shown above. (the color is a little off)
