Description

Environmentally friendly clothing for outdoor activities.

While the Solar Wind Jacket can’t guarantee that those in power develop renewable energy sources within the next ten years, Patagonia did make this jacket with environmentally conscious fabrics, and it’s recyclable through Patagonia’s Common Threads Garment recycling program. This earth-friendly jacket blocks alpine gusts and adds a bit of insulation on cold camping nights.
  • After a ten-year hiatus, Patagonia reunited with Gore-Tex to offer waterproof breathable fabrics and the earth-friendly technical simplicity you’ve come to expect from Patagonia
  • Water-resistant WindStopper fabric provides protection from wet weather and extreme mountain winds
  • 60g of Primaloft Eco insulation provides lightweight, compressible warmth
  • Low-profile cuffs on the wrists keep water from running down your arms when you are climbing steep mixed ice and snow
  • Cord locks in the hood and hem to seal out rain and snow

Around town and around the mountain

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket is light, comfortable, and warm! What more could you ask for? The Gore WindStopper really does stop wind, to the point that the rest of your body will feel cold! Fit is spot on; fine by itself, room for layers underneath. The pockets are generous (although the internal pocket is a little awkward) and the hem drawstring is easy to operate. While I wish the insulation was something other than Eco (Sport or One), it does keep you warm. Did I mention it's light?

Great Jacket, very light, strong material. It won't beak if you scratc it on a rock by accident. Overall good quality, and a sober look: you can't expect less from Patagonia. The zippers are awesome and it definitely is windproof. you can tight the bottom so it really protects your entire body from the wind The fit is slim ! I am 6"1' - 190lb and I bought a Large. I actually like this fit a lot. You can totally wear it around town. I was hesitating between this one and some of the Marmots windproof jackets that I think are really awesome. This one tends to keep you warmer and leaves enough space for an R3. It makes the Solar Wind jacket adaptable to cold weather. Also the fabric allows for wider mouvement! I could definitely see myself skiing or ice climbing with this one !

i'm 6' and 175lb and would love this jacket to go over base and mid layers. what's the best size in this cut?

Responded on

I'm 6'1" 180lb and with base and midlayers, a large fits best on me, so you'll probably do well with a large.

Happy to call this a "go to" jacket.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The majority of controversy about this jacket seems to be about the fit. For reference, I think it fits EXACTLY like a MHW Monkeyman. A little short in the body, a little long in the arms, kinda snug throughout but nothing that I would call "weird". I am 5'10" and 135, (clearly) pretty thin, with longer legs I guess. A Small fits me perfectly. I can layer a midweight baselayer and midweight fleece (Arc'teryx Appache Cardigan) and do not feel restricted at all. That said, it really isn't too baggy if I just wear a t-shirt or something underneath. I really wouldn't change the fit.

Small is my normal size in Patagonia jackets, with this fitting just a hair smaller than average.

I was expecting this to be a great jacket for casual use, snowshoeing, as a warmer weather belay jacket, etc. because I didn't expect it to be too packable, given the beefier windstopper shell. However, I was wrong, and it's totally packable enough for a lot of backpacking trips, especially in cooler weather where I'd be wearing it a lot, either as a midlayer under a shell, or a semi-active outer layer.

The collar, zipper, drawcord, cuffs, pockets (elevated for pack/harness compatibility), and materials are all perfect.

I'm gonna be wearing this at the crag this spring, chilly mornings in the ADKs this summer, Winter bouldering California, to class, to work, backpacking in NH in the cold, and any other time I wanna fend off the wind with a little worry-free insulation added in.

Great everyday jacket

  • Gender: Male

This is a great jacket that I can wear daily. It is very light and compresses very well. Lightly insulated but the windstopper makes a huge difference in blocking out the breeze. The pits are a little high, very comfortable if I wear a thin shirt, but not great if I wear a thick sweater. I'm about 5'8, 140 the small works great.

Very Comfortable

Just got mine in and i have to say it's probably one of the most comfortable jackets i've ever put on. Like someone else mentioned, the draw cord system is very efficient and i like the pockets up right below the chest. I'm already ready for the cold weather to get here so i can start wearing it. Im 5'9 and 170lbs and the medium fits perfectly. I was worried that the armpits would be cut a little too small for layering(which is the case with some of my Marmot jackets) but there is plenty room for a light base layer. Great jacket and it should stand the test of time like all my Patagonia gear.

Does this jacket fit similar to the nano or micro puff jacket?

great jacket

this has the best waist draw-cord I have ever seen- totally technical and works perfect- the cut is unlike any other jacket I have- I'm 5'10" and 189 pounds and the large fits perfect- I tried a medium on at a local store and it was too small so I knew to order a large- the cuffs have no elastic so if you don't get them adjusted just right you have to loosen them to take the jacket off- i wish it had a small amout of elastic but I have adjusted them so I can work the cuffs off my wrists without pulling the velcro apart- the pockets are the best, the are higher up than most jackets so when you put stuff in the pockets like your cell phone it doesn't fall down to belt level- I echo the comments of the last reviewer and suggest that you really try this jacket on to get the perfect fit- its way better in person that the pictures online- very light and the collar is just right - well worth the $250.

Double The Goods

Combining a Nano Puff with a Gore Windstopper shell...smart move on the end of the folks out in Ventura, CA. Used this jacket just about everyday on the river during a 2 weeks Steelhead fly fishing trip. I was a bit skeptical at fist of Patagonia teaming up with Gore-Tex, but seriously, it couldn't have been a better move. The shell is great and the Nano insulation is the best. The fit is unique, so before you buy, I would try one on. It has a shorter cut to it than what you might think. I am 5'9" and 185 lbs. with big shoulders and I got a size - M. At fist I thought it was too tight in the shoulders, but as I started to wear it more, I realized it fits great. A Large would have been way to big, especially for someone who is 5'9". The cuffs are stellar. The waist cord draw-string system is on of the best I have ever seen. All in all, a great do-it-all piece to add to your mix.
