Description

All your friends have one for good reason.

As the ubiquitous synthetic insulator found everywhere from the crags of Indian Creek to the backcountry ridges of the Tetons, the Patagonia Men’s Micro Puff Jacket is a time-tested classic that packs big warmth for little weight. The Micro Puff’s PrimaLoft One insulation packs heat even when it’s wet, and the windproof recycled-polyester shell fabric makes for durable weather resistance and easy packing.

Pleasantly surprised

I have the nanopuff pullover and vests and i love both of them. I had some hesitations abut how warm this jacket would be but was pleasantly surprised once i got it. The jacket is low bulk but it very warm. I wore it in Breck in a 0 degree whiteout with an underarmour and a shell and was warm. A great insulating layer for skiing or outdoor winter activities. Also double as a casual around town jacket. Admittedly I had relatively low expectations given its lightweight and (what feels like) minimal fill but the primaloft exceeded my initial expectations. The black is a matte finish (no trash bag look at all) and they give you a stuff sack which is more than ample in size. The shell has a finish which is surprisingly water resistant. by no means would i wear it in a rainstorm but in a light drizzle its fine

Does this jacket run true to size? I usually wear size Large in most things and am currently wearing a size Large Burton outershell. I'm about 6-0ish, 6-1 and weigh 175. Thinking of using this as layer under my outershell but also as jacket for when I'm out and about. Also considering the down sweater. Not sure which would be better. Thanks

Responded on

They run true to size but fit a little boxy. You can't go wrong with either jacket.

Great Jacket

I recently bought this and wore it for a quick tour of NYC in the winter. Weather was not extreme at all but this was the perfect jacket because it was very light yet kept me warm on the 32-34 degree evenings. Days were in the 40's and I opened it up to cool off. Also the bright Mango color was great against the contrast of all the black TNF jackets in Manhattan. LOL. I am 6'3" 230# and the XL was a perfect fit. I like how the back drops a bit more than the front. Elastics reach to the pockets so you could cinch up without taking your hands out. Large mesh "goggle" pocket inside on the right and large chest pocket on the inside on the left. Comes with a separate stuff sack which I thought was weird. Have not tried to fit into chest pocket yet but seems as if it could fit.

How does this jacket compare to the Patagonia nano-puff in terms of being bulky and in terms of warmth and durability?

I have a nano puff which I love.....with one exception....the outer layer is not as durable as I'd like. You have to be very careful of all things sharp or it will tear.

Responded on

The MicroPuff uses 32-denier fabric. The Nano uses 15-denier. It will be more abrasion-resistant. The Micro also uses 100 gram Primaloft One where the Nano specs only 60 gram, so the Micro should be warmer, as well. You do take a 5.5 oz weight penalty.

Responded on

Steve,
If durability is a major concern, a great piece to check out is the Patagonia Solar Wind. It's basically a Nano Puff with a Gore Windstopper Soft Shell for the exterior. It offers much greater abrasion and tear resistance than the Micro Puff or Nano Puff who's main goal is lightweight warmth.

How does this jacket compare in warmth to the Mountain Hardware Compressor PL jacket. It seems this has 100g of Primaloft One vs the PL has 80g of Primaloft Eco. Can someone tell me if there is a difference?

Best Answer Responded on

Primaloft One is Primaloft's top of the line insulation. Which means for the weight it's going to be the warmest, softest, and most comfortable synthetic insulation offered. 100g vs 80g isn't a huge difference, but the Micro Puff here would be a little warmer than the mountain hardwear piece.

Thank you Ty. This is helpful.

patagonia micro puff

Very versitile, I live in Laramie,Wy - it's a harsh environment - windy as heck this past winter. This jacket is comfortable - wind proof, light, but pretty warm.

Just perfect

Great jacket, real warm by itself with a light baselayer under (R1 was pretty much made for this I think!) and works for me down way below freezing, or if your looking to do something a little more intense throw on a shell and you've got yourself a bombproof outfit. The jacket blocks wind a heck of a lot more than I expected, a nice feature. 6'0" 155lbs, I wear a medium, (kinda like most 'gonia, it runs a little large) I was swimming in the large and it was hard to cram into a shell. Overall a very worthy investment. Plus my girlfriend thinks it looks nice!

Does this jacket have 100g insulation like the hooded version, or is it a lighter fill weight?

Brian, yup the Micro Puff jacket has the same 100g's of Primaloft One that the Micro Puff Hoody does.

Nice!

I was in a hurry when I purchased the puff...thought I was buying the pullover but ended up with the jacket. No regrets! Went skiing in -20 degree weather with a merino 4, can't remember the second layer, puff jacket and a arcteryx sindwinder shell and my core was perfectly toasty. Although my face and legs froze my upper body was perfect, and I was (at that point) happy that I had bought the jacket. I wear it often when I'm running out of the house, too. It folds nicely and looks pretty good. Excellent layer under my p-coat treking into NYC for work as well. NO BULK! Can't miss with this product!

Warm and generous in size

I have used the micropuff jacket and trousers for the last couple of years. The primary use has been as an extra insulating layer during breaks when doing backcountry skiing or as an "around camp" jacket during wintertime camping. The jacket fills this purpose very well. The size is generous, you can wear it outside your shell. Fiber fill is an advantage if the jacket gets wet or humid. The compressed size is approx 2-3 litres.

Terribly light and warm!

Excellent in every respect. Buy this jacket for cold weather pursuits. You won't regret it.

Great Choice

Am 5' 10" and 210 lbs - the large fits well with room to layer a thin vest. Not quite as warm as my R4 but much lighter and compresses nicely. Sheds a light rain well. Fabric seems durable. Not the lightest synthetic but a good all round choice.

How bulky is this jacket?
I'm going to be doing some rather lengthy walking around outside in the northern NY cold. It won't be anything too strenuous - though I suppose I could also wear this skiing as well.
I'm looking to wear this under a somewhat slim-fitting shell and would like to avoid looking like a marshmallow.
As a reference, how does the bulk (and warmth) compare to a North Face Denali? Is there anything else that is equally as warm that I should consider?

Best Answer Responded on

While I personally don't own one of these, I've read enough reviews and heard enough about this jacket to say that it shouldn't be bulkly at all. It should be highly compressible and should fit well under your shell, assuming your shell isn't tight fitting. I don't know how it compares to TNF Denali, but I know I would pick this jacket over the Denali any day.

Responded on

This is a great, low bulk insulated jacket. Perfect for layering, or super warm on it's own. It packs down small when you need it to, and the Prima Loft insulation heats up incredibly well when you start moving in cold weather.

Hey folks. Does anyone know how this jacket would compare to Mountain Hardwear's Monkey Man Fleece? In terms of how much it compresses (how much space it takes up when smushed into a backpack). As well as its warmth compared to the Monkey Man.
Thanks

Responded on

The Patagonia Micro Puff is going to be a lot warmer than the monkey man, and should compress to approx the same size. Each Micro Puff Jacket comes with a stuff sack that helps compress it even more.

Responded on

I've had them both and I think the micro puff goes as small as you could possibly ever get the monkey man with a compression sack. You'll want this over the monkey man hands down!

I am looking for a puf jacket in extra long size large or x-large do they make them.

Blaine, the Patagonia DAS Parka might be the best bet for you. It's longer than any other puff jacket Patagonia makes and is super warm w 160 grams of Primaloft One.
