Patagonia put used pop bottles and worn-out threads to good use in the Men's Micro Puff Hooded Jacket. The water-resistant, windproof, insulated Micro Puff Jacket has your back—and your front and head—in the storm. Patagonia used synthetic insulation in the Micro Puff because it won't wilt when it gets wet and leave your core open to cold winds. Recycled polyester makes up the durable, DWR-coated shell. The adjustable hood fits over your climbing or ski helmet, so your head stays warm and protected. Interior mesh pockets provide a handy place to put wet gloves to dry. With a regular fit, this jacket works comfortably over layers.
Bottom Line: Ski or mountaineer in your lightweight, warm Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket.
I live in the land of puffy coats as my friend calls Montana and this coat fits right in. I didn't have the fit problems of other reviewers but I don't like my jackets tight. This coat has been warm enough for milling about town and walking to and from school. I don't know if it would be adequate for the recommended uses of climbing with the standing around belaying or stand up to the abuse of backountry skiing as the nylon would rip at the slightest snag. I like it for what I use it for, which is walking around town when it is really cold.
This is not an athletic-fitting jacket (doesn't hug your torso) nor can really be used as an outer-layer on backpacking or hiking excursions because of the delicate outer fabric that rips easily. But as a great warm layer for winter camping, or to wear around town, it does the job very well. It's very warm, very very light/compressible, and very stylish.
How about the Patagonia Das Parka? Very warm and great quality with a thicker shell material than the Micro Puff. The latter is a terrific jacket however.

Great jacket! As said above, the fit is a little weird. I'm 6' and 160 lbs, and a small fits me best. If you want a lot of layers under it, or if you want to create dead air space, then a medium would work. If fact, I'm a small in most Patagonia jackets. Once you get it fit correctly, this thing is the shit. Super warm, nice features, excellent zippers, packs down small, and water resistant finish to boot! One of the best jackets I've ever owned.
i am trying to figure out size for my husband. He is 5'8" and weighs 180 . i usually buy size large but some of your reviewers have said that it has a very generous fitHis shirt size is 151/2 32 or 33 and sports jacket is 42 regularshould i order med or large?
It's true to size so do NOT size UP unless you like it roomy. It's slightly roomier around the waist to chest but that's expected since most people wear a sweater or jacket underneath for insulation. It really depends if the person likes a bulky fit or a slim fit. Best thing to do is try it on at a nearby store, if available.
you read the reviews to see if you should or shouldn't buy it. You should! But I'll start off with the cons to get straight to the point. 1. Yes, the sizing is weird. I recommend sizing down. Where I normally wear a medium even in patagonia shirts a medium was huge in this jacket. I'm 5'9" 145 lbs with "broad" shoulders relatively speaking. so while the fit wasn't bad in the shoulders so much and the sleeve length I couldn't deal with all the extra room and length in the midsection. I was worried a small would have sleeves too short and be a little restricting in the shoulders, but it was perfect. So be wary of the sizing before purchasing 2. To me this jacket is for backcountry adventuring where weight and packability matter. This is my belay jacket for backcountry climbing, and if any of you are serious climbers you know how nice it is to have a second bottom up zipper so you can keep it zipped and still open the bottom for your belay device. If it bothers me that much in the future I'm sure I can have one put on it and solve that problem. so if neither of these cons have turned you away from this jacket let me tell you about how awesome it is! Super light and compressible! Awesome loft, esp for synthetic insulation; it's very warm Sizing down allows for easier layering: still plenty of room underneath for a baselayer and a fleece, yet small enough to throw my hard shell over top The hood is very adjustable with quality cords and cinching systems. Not too big for normal use, but still big enough to fit a helmet under it well. It also will move with your head when not wearing a helmet, so as not to limit your vision Big hand pockets and HUGE inside pockets that are good for bottles or books or whatever. Seriously, I can carry my textbooks in them! It comes with a super light stuff sack that I keep in the zipper chest pocket. It works out perfect since I'd probably never use that pocket for much else anyway. At the same time though it's nice to have a good zipper pocket if you need to keep some change or cigarettes or whatever else you wanna smoke in there Did I mention it's super comfortable and just feels like excellent quality? I got this jacket on steepandcheap for just over a hundred bucks, but after having it for a while I realize it's well worth the 225 retail. Now that winter is ending I'm seeing them on sale for like 150 or 175 tho. so other than the zipper deal this jacket is so perfect for me. I hope you can enjoy it the same.
the fit is sooo off - I am 5'9, 150lb and after reading some reviews got size small - when it arrived, it was still quite roomy around my body but too tight around my shoulders and sleeves were a little short. I am very very worried that if I sized up to medium, the fit would be way too roomy around my trunk... it is a shame because otherwise it looks like a great, warm, packable jacket and I really liked the hood. I know you are supposed to wear this with layers but with such a roomy fit I would need to have so many layers on that I would probably not need a warm jacket anymore... I think I will complain to Patagucci that they need to design something with an athletic fit.
You'll need to check the measurements in the sizing chart.Generally, someone who's 6ft and of "average" build would fit a large and XL for a bit more room. There are "tall" sizes when it comes to Patagonia outerwear!
Had this for a month in the freezing cold of Boston (ranging from 0-30degrees fahrenheit), and it has helped me a great deal. Cuts through the wind and keeps me as warm as you can be in 0 degree weather. Comes with a handy stuff sack to put the jacket in, and is uber-versatile. I'm 5'10" 150lbs and the small fits perfectly (I love the Patagonia fit, not too baggy and not too slim cut). Definitely recommend if you can get it on sale.
I have always been aggravated when the jacket that I ordered just did not fit right so I am here to help you. The fit is nowhere near regular unless you have a huge belly or a baby on the way. I am 6" and weigh 167 with a muscular build and I bought a medium. This jacket fits great on with just a t-shirt or with layers. It has a very generous cut throughout the body but I feel it is lacking in sleeve length by about one or two inches. The reason I say that is b/c it is semi tight in the back when you cross your arms even without layers. With that said, I am able to comfortably layer a base layer, light weight mid layer (Patagonia R2) and my Arc Teryx Theta AR underneath the Micro Puff. I also own a Mtn Hardwear Compressor PL in a size large and feel that they are cut just about the same but the Micro Puffs sleeves are a tad shorter and the hem a bit longer. I hope this helps. Bottom line is if you want a light weight but burly insulated belay parka then this is the one to get. I have not tested it in the cold yet since I just got it and that is the reason for not giving it five stars.
Wear it daily around the town during this cold Detroit winter. Very light, warm, and blocks wind well. The hood is a big plus. I am 5'11" 165 lbs with relatively long arms and the Large fits nicely (but I like to layer). My only complaint is the pockets are not deep enough. But other then that, I love the jacket.
Others may disagree, but I have a 4-5 yr old model, and a 1-2 yr old model, and they perform great. I am sold on synthetic insulation after a couple rafting trips, and was surprised to find that the jacket works great for warmer ski days solo w/o a shell. Cuts the wind, decent water repellancy if treated, and I have little problems with tears, even on climbing trips. Oh, and the lightness/packability factor is key for packing it on BC ski trips.
Have a older model ~3-5 years but it has roughly the same material just looks different!
It's thin but more true to size so do NOT size up unless you like it roomy. For a thin jacket, it's really warm especially if you layer correctly with a nice warm fleece jacket!
It blocks the wind well and it's water resistant not water proof due to the slick nylon shell. Not sure if this version's hand pockets are insulted but the older version is NOT so leave gloves in the pockets!
It's rather PRICEY, but that's usually the case with Patagonia products!
