Description

A tasteful, toasty sweater jacket for winter window shopping.

Travel your mountain town’s salty sidewalks this winter once you put on the mid-thigh length, casual Patagonia Women’s Merino Sweater Coat. The basket-weave 5-gauge merino wool holds your body heat close when you button up the sweater’s front placket and tall funnel collar, which adds some class to your shopping or dining adventures when worn as a large shawl collar. The forward facing princess seams and slim fit allow your feminine shape to shine despite the puffy-jacket weather and the fold-over cuffs provide some elegance as you point out accessories in shop windows you only pretend to afford.

I was hesitant to purchase this item because some reviewers have been critical of its propensity for pilling and I have not found this to be a problem. The sweater is the perfect length both overall and in the sleeves, it is very well made, comfortable and warm. I haven't washed it yet but when I do I will be putting it in a laundry mesh and wash it separately inside out so as to reduce the chance of it pilling from abrasion from other clothing items. It's a great and versatile piece.

I really like the looks of this sweater,...

I really like the looks of this sweater, but I don't want the pilling. Is this problem due to the basket weave or dye specific?? Which color did felix4480 buy?

Hey there, not sure about what which one they bought... but I think a few years of pill-free use on a wool sweater is pretty good... my experience has been that the pilling starts because of how they are washed; my washer/dryer would cause some garments to pill faster... maybe just need to heed the washing instructions inside the garment...

Write your answer here...I believe the poster stated five wears, no five years. There was no mention of whether they had even washed it yet. For a sweater to start pilling badly after only five wears is not good; however, if they were wearing it under something else that was made of an abrasive fabric then this would have to be expected. Wool is pretty sturdy but even the best wool socks will pill after rubbing the inside linings of shoes/boots. Even wool/merino wool socks are to be washed and dried inside out to help avoid the pilling.

A way that I have found to get rid of pilling is to wash my merino with a pair of jeans or heavy duty khakis. It doesn't completely get rid of it, but it helps quite a bit.

This sweater looks nice and is by far the warmest sweater like this I have ever worn. But I think I'm returning mine because after just a few wears it looks kind of crappy. It pills like crazy and for $150 I just don't think it's worth it. So, if comfort and warmth are what you are looking for then buy it, but if you want a jacket that looks nice for more than 5 wears then maybe not.

I have a similar sweater, a Smartwool that has a texture to it. It looked great the first time I wore it, then after the next couple of times, it started pilling. I don't know if this is avoidable with this type of sweater. I love the sweater so much, and this is the only gripe I have. You just have to get a sweater shaver. :)
