Ideal for sea kayaking and versatile enough for whitewater, the Patagonia Locean PFD includes a slew of features to help you stay safe no matter what kind of boat your paddle. Patagonia fit this PFD for those with a short torso, so you don't feel like you're paddling in a back brace. The Locean PFD includes a dual-compartment mesh pocket to hold small necessities like sunscreen, and the front includes a place to clip your river knife and whistle. Patagonia even added a shoulder strobe holder and reflective tape to help you stay more visible during emergency situations.

Bottom Line: Whitewater or open water—the Locean takes on everything.

I thought I'd write this because, even though I have not

I thought I'd write this because, even though I have not owned this PFD, it is a Type 3, and therefore regarded as not suitable for the open ocean. So people who buy this for the open seas, be warned! I suggest you buy a PFD Type 1, it is much much better.

No one's using this for open ocean, they're using it for coastal sea kayaking. Type 1s don't fit in a kayak.

I used this pfd for two summers as a commercial whitewater guide (maybe 100 days on the water) before it started to wear out. For anyone who gives it a little more TLC than your typical river guide, it would last a long time. Plus, Patagonia has a sweet warranty, so if anything goes wrong with it, they'll replace it for you.
My only complaint is that it was a pain to pull over my head to get on and off-- it meant I always had to take off my hat and sunglasses. Other than that, I liked it a lot.
