Runs really small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

Great materials and quality workmanship, but runs VERY small. Also too bulky to wear under a helmet. If you have a medium-sized head or larger, or want to wear it under a helmet, I'd suggest a boring grey Smartwwool or Icebreaker merino beanie. They're not as pretty, but they work. (PS, I love Patagonia stuff, but this one is an easy pass for me.)

Patagonia Beanie, the best?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

In the outerwear space two companies stand out. Patagonia and Arc'teryx. I specifically ordered the Fitz Roy hat to match (poser alert) my blue Patagonia Powder Bowl Jacket.

This beanie fits my large-ish noodle perfect, stays on my head and the fuzzy liner inside keeps my head pretty warm with the wind is a bit brisk. It's a bit on the steep side for a hat but I know with Patagonia gear it will probably outlast me.

Update: Moving down from 5 to 3 stars. After a couple of seasons of use, this hat shrunk down to where I can't pull it over the bottom of my ears. Bummer, as I really dug this hat, but when commuting home in the winter, my earlobes remain important to keep the whole "ear" look. Bummer.

Nice...but

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

It is lined and a nice, warm and high quality hat. But it runs a little small. Needs to be longer to fit my head. Patagonia could add soem material to this oen and sel la lot more hats.

Why have just one beanie?

Why have just one or two beanies when you can have 5 or 6? Gotta admit I bought this one because it matches my orange jacket and I just felt like a new beanie. Glad to see there are at least a few half way decent color/design choices out there. The beanie itself is pretty basic. Not real high tech, but plenty comfortable for most all occasions. I particularly like the 50-50 wool-nylon outer material. Very warm. The polyester liner is way comfortable. Fits to my big dome well without extra air space. Doesn't require any readjustments once you put it on. Only time I won't wear it is skiing in a blizzard as I'd like something a little more hi-tech then Very satisfied.

    Why have just one beanie?

    It's a beanie...

It's kind of hard to screw up a beanie, Patagonia did a pretty good job here.

Pros: Nice soft liner, warm and good construction.

Cons: For the UL'ers it is heavier than my arcteryx but they seem to both keep my head warm.

When it comes down to it I think with beanies it is what you want your head to look like. My wife wanted mine to look like a fish I guess.
