Dawn patrol to desk jockey without skipping a beat.
Taking its name from a classic Santa Barbara-area surf break, the Patagonia Jalama Backpack separates wet gear without spoiling the rest of the bag's contents, should you head to work or school after surfing all morning. Its waterproof main compartment holds your wetsuit (or trunks), booties, and towel, allowing you to go straight into school or work without skipping a beat. The designers at Patagonia reinforced the waterproof compartment's polyester lining with a TPU coating and sealed seams to ensure complete separation between dry and wet contents.
Making this bag versatile enough to tackle the daily rigors of school and work, its back compartment easily secures your textbooks, papers, and laptop (up to 17-inch). Plus, the laptop sleeve is slightly elevated to protect your precious computer, should you set this bag down on the concrete or hardwood floor. Additional pockets include a front accessory compartment with an internal lanyard for holding keys, a front stash for quickly tossing your phone or shades, and two side pockets for stashing water bottles. Throw in ventilated Air Flow mesh shoulder straps, an adjustable sternum strap, and a reinforced haul handle for easy carrying to and from your favorite break.

My go-to bag
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I bought this backpack this past spring when they produced it in Turkish Red with Blue detailing. I have since used this bag almost every day for school, camping, hiking, and travel. It easily fits all my essentials, with plenty of pockets to help organize everything, and yet it still easily stows under the seat in front of me even on the smallest planes.
As the description states it has a laptop pocket which holds my laptop and a couple of small sketchbooks. The Waterproof pocket is awesome, and prevents all my gear from getting wet (I usually stow my laptop in there on rainy days).
The only bad thing I've noticed with this pack is how much stuff gets lost at the bottom of the waterproof pocket due to weird lining attachment. Otherwise, I really love this backpack and plan to take it on more adventures soon!
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I ordered this pack about a year ago. This pack has held up through MANY trips to the backcountry! Was a rock climbing guide through the past summer and was on the crag all day most days of the week. The 1" webbing waist straps were kind of useless so I just cut them off. I got the feather grey bag so the white has gotten a little stained but I'm sure a run through the washer and it'll be as good as new. The laptop pocket was a little small but held my 15" laptop fine. The waterproof "dry bag" pocket is pretty revolutionary, however, it can be a little difficult to put large items in because its so baggy inside. The padding is pretty good but could be improved on. The only things I would want to change would be making the overall pack a lot larger, maybe 35L. Also I would make the bag totally water proof.. Overall a good purchase! Love Patagonia!
I bought this backpack because it said it would fit a 17" computer. However, upon receipt I discovered it does not. It is a great backpack, but I just wish I had known it didn't fit my computer. Will be returning
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Not only does it look amazing, but the waterproof pocket is awesome. To clarify, the entire pack isn't waterproof, there's just a waterproof pouch inside one of the pockets.
Wanted to love this pack!
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I love the LOOK of this pack, but when I received it, the waterproof compartment is very cumbersome. The lining is not secured in the large compartment so it's hard to even see to the bottom of the back. It's kind of like putting a giant black trash bag in your backpack and packing your things in the squished up trash bag. LOVE the look, LOVE the colors, so sad to be returning it, but I think the large compartment would have driven me crazy. :(
The back of the backpack
I got the butt of the Backcountry stock and realized that something melted the black fabric in the back; unfortunately, it is too late to return because I threw away the shipping box. Check the condition of the purchase before you throw away the box! The backpack itself is roomy and light. The various compartments make organization easy. The straps are a lot thinner but more breathable than the NorthFace backpack that I used to carry. Really- the only downside was that the backpack came in a sub par condition.
