Exceeding expectations

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 5"
    Weight: 175 lbs
    Size Purchased: XL

I have had this jacket for a month or two and have already gotten such great use from it. It is BEYOND PERFECT for stuffing into a bike pack, camera pack, day pack, etc. But especially a bike pack because it is SO SMALL and SO LIGHT.

I can wear it around a windy trailhead, and perhaps start pedaling with it on, and then shove it in my pack when I start to heat up. Then pull it out again at the top of a climb for wind protection on the descent. It can even be useful in a light rain if you didn't bother to bring a full on rain jacket (I'm not saying it's waterproof, but it will certainly do a better job at protection vs your skin and tank top).

On cooler days I have been quit comfortable pedaling uphill in this jacket, too.

Patagonia delivers. As usual!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 7"
    Weight: 120 lbs
    Size Purchased: Small

I bought this to replace a Patagonia pullover windbreaker that I've had for 17 years, used primarily for running. (It didn't wear out, mind you. I had purchased it to have a baggy fit, consistent with how I used to dress for running then, and I decided I wanted one with a slimmer fit. Styles change before Patagonia stuff wears out!) When I pulled this jacket out of the package, I couldn't believe that it could possibly block the wind, given how thin and light the fabric is. But this Patagonia product does what it says it will do! It helped keep me comfortable running in 15+ mph winds in Chicago in springtime (read: not warm, around 40F), with just a baselayer underneath. It folds up super small and takes up no room in a bag. My only suggestion would be to have a loop or something to tie down the hood (don't always need it), but I get around that by just tucking it in. Fits TTS. Great product, highly recommend.

Does this jacket offer any sun protection?

Best Answer Responded on

Yes, in that it's a piece of fabric in between you and the sun, but it's not rated for a particular SPF. Given how tightly woven the fabric is (windproof and water-resistant), I think it's very unlikely that you'd burn through it.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

ive worn this jacket on rainy days riding my bike to work, running in the rain, windy days around work campus, or just that fresh cilly day and having a little extra to wear. its such a versatile jacket, fits perfectly. i have plenty of room to move around when im doing active stuff. the breathability is really good.
i got the green colour and its just cool, really different. initally i was hesitant on the price but now its been worth every penny.
i often dont leave the house without this coat.

Go to light jacket for me....

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I literally pack this jacket everywhere I go. It's so small and light and easy to carry with you, so why not? You never know when it will get a bit chilly or windy on a run, hike, bike ride, etc. It's even a great layering piece for going out and about in the cooler hours of the early morning or late evening summertime where I live. There are a lot of great colors to choose from as well. I love the bright grassy green I have (no longer there) and hope/wish that Patagonia continues to make more vivid colors for their women's gear. Women don't always want to wear pastels. They like bright and bold too. I always keep this in my carry on when I travel too.

I really like this jacket, the colors are terrific (I got the yellow) and it is well made. I kind of wish there was a pocket though.

The chest pocket kind of block the left side of jacket move naturally when you are not zipping up. A better way is set the opening of pocket vertically. That's a minor fault in this jacket

Lightweight and functional

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Great little jacket to have. I got it to use for running, and it worked in the current cold weather with just throwing a base layer underneath. Moderates temperature well and the bright color (Oasis Blue) helps pesky motorists see you. Will have to see how it handles in the other seasons.

Great jacket

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

Bought one for my wife and my sister. They both love it. Perfect to cut the wind when running, climbing or camping. It should be a part of every trip.

AK backcountry essential!

AK backcountry essential!

Just the right amount of protection for the skin up! I don't leave home without a Houdini. It's super lightweight and packable and has saved me on multiple occasions in the mountains whether I'm hiking, skiing, or mountain biking. If you play in the mountains... you need a Houdini, I promise.

Take it everywhere!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I can take this jacket everywhere! It is so lightweight and packable, that it is always with me now. It fits into its own pocket. It feels like nothing at all when you wear it, but provides some great wind protection when you might otherwise get chilled. I find it true to size and am happy with ordering my normal size, as I tend to wear more slim fitting gear when I need this (hiking base layers, or a tee shirt, etc), and I didn't want a lot of extra bagginess. I have fit it over a fleece though too. I got an XS; I am 5'2" and 115 lbs. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because no side pockets (probably for weight and compressibility), and it is a bit expensive, but if you catch a sale--grab one, you won't regret it!

Hike yourself up a peak, work up a sweat, but you wont freeze when you arrive at the summit....because you were smart and packed your Houdini! Blocks the wind so you can fully enjoy yourself. This is an essential piece for hiking, running and climbing. Fits in the palm of your hand. I am 5'7" 118 lbs with a 34 bust. I ordered the medium as I wanted some extra room for mobility and glad I did.

Patagonia Houdini Jacket-Fit & Function!

The various fun color options in this Patagonia Houdini Jacket make me want to buy more! Bought and used this jacket for my first few trail runs of the spring season. So far, I find the best qualities to be A) it's fit - not boxy at all, and does not limit movement and B) its breathability. It's extremely lightweight, you can't even tell you're wearing anything. I have yet to test it in the wind, but it also has windproof tech!

Great Jacket!

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I actually bought this jacket for a big backpacking trip to replace my fleece and save a little weight based on hiking blog recommendations. However, so far I've used it for running only.
I've had it out in rain and it's been pretty effective without overheating me. I ran for 4 hours in 30 degree weather and was able to pull up the sleeves and unzip as the temp began to climb. It's light enough that I don't mind carrying it on a run if I misjudge the weather and have to strip it off.

My only negative is that the pocket is a bit skimpy for stuffing it easily/quickly. My husband doesn't have this issue with his men's model.

Fit was fine. I'm 5'6", 135 pounds, and bought a large. If I only wanted it for running and didn't think that I'd be layering for hiking, a medium would probably be better.

An all-around winner. Jack-of-all-trades

LOVE. THIS. THING. It is so lightweight that I take it on all adventures. I have the 2011/2012 version, which has the pocket on the side (a little awkward), instead of on the chest. This jacket keeps you warm in the wind, and can withstand a light misting. I wear this jacket mountain biking, biking around town, and as an essential layer for hiking, alpine climbing and ski touring. My only complaint is that it gets smelly pretty quickly. Perhaps from overuse?
