The Patagonia Gritty Pack is a lightweight, durable, versatile backpack for fast-and-light alpine ascents and backcountry touring. The Gritty is made with ShiftLayer nylon that has two independent layers to reduce friction and protect against the harsh environment of the alpine world. At only 2lb 3oz, this Patagonia pack is light enough for climbers who count ounces as they pack, and the removable stays cut weight even further. Its reverse-opening lid is easily accessible while hanging from a belay and creates a clean profile to shed snow and water. The Patagonia Gritty pack also has an insulated sleeve for your hydration system to keep water accessible and keep it from freezing. When it's time to bivy, pull out the removable fold-out back panel to insulate your upper body on whatever ledge you come across.

Bottom Line: If light and fast is your style, the Patagonia Gritty pack is your backpack.

Love this pack! Works great as a cold weather day pack, hauling a splitboard, a day ice climbing, etc... No complaints, would purchase again without reservation, even without considering the lifetime warranty.

Tough as nails

I bought this pack a couple months back. The pack fits me well but i could see some people having some problems if they were over six feet. The fabric is amazing and DOESN'T RIP! I have put it to the test and after days hard use it shows very little wear. You can also remove the supports and make the pack even lighter which is a big advantage. versatile, tough, simple pack. Definitely the stuff to have.

Good pack, annoying insert

By:
November 1, 2007

I recently picked up one of these packs and, overall, it's great. I have a size large and didn't run into the sizing issue some other folks have (although I'm 5'11'' with a shorter torso as opposed to the big guy). It's tough, comfortable, and, as usual with Patagonia, well made. However, the removable back panel is a major pain to maneuver. You'll mainly run into this issue when trying to put it back, since it *just* fits. After a lot of cramming and smoothing, it's still nearly impossible to secure the velcro holding it in. My main suggestion would be that Patagonia make the pad a little smaller (or the sleeve slightly larger) to accommodate the pad, preventing this annoyance. What I'll likely do is stick in my own chunk of custom cut foam padding (one layer, as opposed to the folded over beast they supply) in there. Otherwise, everything else, in terms of construction, is top-notch.

Great Pack

This pack in regular size fits me really well (5'6'' girl with short torso). The material feels very sturdy and lives up to the patagonia name. I haven't got a chance to use it...can't wait to put it to test this weekend doing ski touring :)

strange sizing...

By:

This backpack seems to be very well thought through, however the sizing is way off! I ordered a large (L), have a back length of 20 inches (6 feet 2 tall). When I put the pack on with the straps loose, the hip-belt closes in the middle between chest and belly button, i.e. about 8-10 inches too high! The pack I have would be too small for a 5 foot person I think. There's a chance it was marked wrongly, however the tag on it says L.
