    An easy decision to make.

The Patagonia Fly Fishing Vest Front Sling takes the best of a fishing vest and blends it with prime features of sling packs so you don't have to choose between a vest or sling. A row of vertical pockets gives you the best of the vest, while a large storage pocket sings the praises of the sling. Light and breathable, the body of this sling-vest is made from 210D polyester 3-D spacer mesh. The shoulder harness and back panel are crafted from pure polyester. Small pockets hold small gear. The back zipper closer guards the entrance to the large pocket, where you can stash lunch, a fly box, and a compressible, ultralight raincoat. An internal security pouch offers waterproof storage for your car keys and cash, while other internal organizers keep tippet spools safe. A bottom water bottle holder prevents you from going dry in the middle of a body of water. With a simple swing, you can change what faces forward, be it the vest side or the sling side. Either way, the Vest Front Sling provides great gear storage on your body for a full day of fly-fishing fun.

Still in search of the perfect pack

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I want to like this sling a lot but it really doesn't work for me. I like the idea of it, but I'm still searching for the perfect river storage system. I gave it 4 stars because I think it is a great design and it has a lot of features.

    Pros:
There are 2 roomy pockets on the front and a fly patch, big enough to hold 2 or 3 tacky boxes, tippet, nippers, forceps etc. Main part of sling can fit a small layer, lunch, more fly boxes and an extra reel. There is a waterproof pouch in main compartment for phone or keys. There are also straps that you can use to strap rod to if hiking.

    Cons:
Runs big so there are lots of flaps from being tightened all the way. When I put a water bottle in the water bottle holder it weighs the bag down below my hips causing a lot of strain. Constantly have to adjust because it is either rubbing or moving around on my shoulder. May not be the case on a larger framed person.

    Incredible.

This pack is an amazing hybrid of vest and sling bag. Spacious? Yep. Features? Tons. It's still small and lightweight enough to be a minimalist pack, but packed with enough pouches, pockets, slots, holders, and space to carry all of your essential gear and then some. Accessing the bag is as easy is unclipping one of the straps and swinging it to your chest from your back. I recommend watching the product video to get the full scope of this. It even has two pull straps on the side of the bag to which I secure my tenkara rod holder making it the perfect bag for any style of fly fishing.

The only negative I can find on this bag is the occasional need to adjust it on my shoulder as it can feel like it is slipping off. It obviously won't slip off because of the straps securing it to you, but probably because of the weight distribution it needs an occasional slide back on to the spot I like it to sit. This is a personal issue, and certainly not anything to remove any stars for.

In summation this is a fantastic pack with something for every fisherman.

    Perfect Organization

I've been using this sling to fish all summer mostly for trout but also on the North Carolina Coast for Redfish and other saltwater fish. In the heat of North Carolina the bag did not trap heat due to the airmesh back and minimalist design. On trout rivers/streams from Virginia to Arkansas to Colorado this pack kept me will equiped for an afternoon outting or all day float trips. I enjoyed how easy it is to switch from the front organizer to the rear pockets. I also enjoyed the capacity of this pack, and how well it carried. This allowed me to take more water and food than I would normally stuff into my vest, allowing me to stay out longer and presumably catch a few more fish. All in all I don't see myself going back to my vest anytime soon.

    Thumbs Up Fishing Pack

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Picked this up for the boyfriend and it's basically the prime fishing sling pack. It's super easy to fit and adjust, and rests comfortably against the body. The sling has good room to hold your fly boxes and accessories, as well as a solid water bottle pocket and the piece to hold your flies on your shoulder. Easy attachments for your net and such too! As mentioned by others, the only not-so-perfect part of this pack is that it runs over your right shoulder- doesn't make much sense for those who cast right handed. It still does function and work well, just might be another perk if it were designed to fit over the left instead!

    Great Size

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large

I wanted to scale down my vest to something manageable on the water but not too small that I couldn't store all my gear between trips. I needed to hook my net, hold a box of in season flies, and store the wet ones, but didn't need to carry everything with me. I can carry everything and more. Took awhile to get used to the feel of having one strap, where it would sit, and I kept thinking the strap was coming off my shoulder. Now I am at ease swinging the pack around to get at the pouch. Worth every penny in the use it is getting and will get in the future. Four stars because I think it is a bit big for my awesome female frame. FYI manufacturers, woman are not the same build for waders or in this matter, vests as men.

    Great casual pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I absolutely love this pack after only a few outings (5-7). Super comfortable and light weight which makes it easy to use on local rivers and streams but maybe not those big rivers but if you're fishing those you probably know what you're doing. Tons of storage space and extremely customizable with all the lash points and what not.

Only issue I have--and I concede the bag is designed to be light weigh and sleek--but the rod carrier system comes lose pretty easily. Interesting because Patagonia makes a vest/camel back that has a bungee strap system far better than this unreliable latch. It's a bigger deal of you like to hike and jump around rocks and trees to get to that honey hole as its jostled more. So I use it to hold a rain jacket, if I use it. But as far as complaints go if that's it I don't think this bag should be ruled out. It's just a great all around average day pack

    POCKETS!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Awesome sling with tons of organizational sleeves and pockets! I purchased this one and the Atom sling at the same time since they were the same price wanted to see up close which one would fit the needs of this kid. Well this one came through with flying colors. I maybe tend to carry a little too much into the waters or maybe things i shouldn't be carrying at all but hey this sling keeps it all organized! Just love how easily it swings for access to front and back without removal and the waterproof security pouch is an awesome must have feature for sure. Gives you a piece of mind if you were to take a splash your keys phone and whatever other electronics you might have will be safe for sure!

    cool and comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was not liking the idea of a sling style fishing vest, after all fly fishing is full of tradition. What a fool I was! This is by far the best accessory that I have purchased for fishing. It is cool and comfortable on the hot days fishing in southwest Colorado and roomy enough to carry everything I need to fish. No more heavy vest for me. Patagonia has made another quality product.

Is this pack designed to go over the right...

Is this pack designed to go over the right shoulder (like Stealth Atom Sling), left shoulder, or is this one able to go either way? Never understood why most fishing sling packs seem to be right shoulder specific given that most of us cast right-handed. Thanks!

    Best Answer

While you could put the Patagonia Vest front Sling over your left shoulder, its design and function dictate that the right shoulder is the most practical place to wear it. I have seen a lot of left should slings in the past but unfortunately my experience with Patagonia is that all sling packs are intended for right shoulder wear.
