When you're racking up major mileage points on a long day hike or trail run slip into the versatile Patagonia Men’s Release Hiking Shoe. The DWR-treated synthetic mesh upper wicks moisture and protects against light rain and splashy stream crossings as you tear down the path. In addition to neutralizing funky odors, the Ortholite X-40 insole works in conjunction with a triple-density EVA footframe to provide cushioning on the longest days. Patagonia also added a Vibram rubber sole with embedded track spikes to give you solid grip on even the gnarliest terrain.

Bottom Line: Fast, light, and versatile? Look no further.

Can hike forever

I can hike, walk, run forever in these shoes. They have great traction and are pretty water resistant. My feet hurt a lot and in these they don't at all.

Great Long Distance Shoe

By:
November 19, 2009

Here is my take on it from the ground up.The Vibram outersole is rock solid with an aggressive tread pattern and embedded rubber spikes for additional traction when the going gets rough. I have run over a variety of surfaces including, hard-packed trails, mud, grass, gravel roads and asphalt. The soles provided excellent traction in all situations. They also offer excellent underfoot protection from sharp rocks and gnarly roots so no need to avoid them. I my opinion, the best test of a soles traction is how it grips on wet granite slabs. I haven't had a chance to test the shoe under these conditions but will update you when the opportunity presents itself. I suspect the soles will handle it just fine. The Vibram sole is so durable, I suspect it will outlast the uppers!

The triple density EVA mid-sole offers excellent cushioning without feeling too soft and spongy. If you have to run on paved roads to get to a trail-head then this might be the shoe for you. The Patagonia Release has the most cushioning of any trail shoe I have tried so far, even more than my Cascadias, which I consider to have very good cushioning. If you're into green, the midsole uses 15% recycled materials.

The shoe's upper is treated with a durable water repellent (similar to the repellent used on water-resistant jackets) to help seal out water when you are running in the rain or splashing through puddles. I haven't had a chance to take the shoes through any stream crossing but the shoes should drain well due to the open mesh design of the upper material. This open design also makes the shoe very breathable, great for warm weather running. Rounding out the uppers is a nicely padded tongue and a Dynamic Fit Lacing system with loops that are separate from the instep. The lacing system custom-wraps the upper around the forefoot. I have the say this shoe fits like a glove! Super comfortable.

The Patagonia Release is now my favorite trail shoe for long-distance running over trails with varying surface conditions. I used this shoe during a 50M trail race last week and had no issues with it. On the down side, the shoe is heavy at 14.5 oz but I can't really say I've noticed the weight on any of my runs. It's a well constructed shoe utilizing quality materials and should last a good long time. What else would you expect from companies like Patagonia and Vibram?

My One True Love

By:
December 11, 2010

I love these shoes for the same reasons I love my woman: They're tough, sleek and sexy, but soft and supportive where it counts; ready for anything and always ready to perform, be it an ultralight 14er ascent, scrambling gnarly granite approaches in Vedauwoo, week-long hiking trips in the Windrivers, or dancing in the rain. They are my best friend, and will accompany me on all my future adventures.

Though I don't count on replacing either any time soon, I'll be more than happy to pick up the same pair of shoes somewhere down the line, when the endless miles of love and abuse become too much for them to handle.

Happy trails!

Patagonia Hiking Shoes

By:

Shoes are great. Durable, light weight, grippy. The only thing I didn't like was the insole, which immediately gave me a blister on the inside of my heal. Easily fixed with other footbeds though. Great shoe and worth the price.

The Vibram bottom package for this shoe will do the job traversing over scree/talus and there's a TPU shock plate for stability and protection.

Great shoes and a great partner scrambling in Vedauwoo, Wyo. Vibram soles performed famously on the razor-sharp granite characteristic to the area.

Awesome.

They are light, breathable and so far bomb proof. The kind of shoe that is so comfortable your feet don't hurt even after a long day on your feet. I am satisfied.

UPDATE: As seen in the other reviews, the uppers were totally destroyed after 4 months or so. The foam and fabric around the heel was destroyed. That being said they were comfortable...until I returned them.

How are these for people that are EXTREME overpronators (like me) that use custom othotics? In the past I have only been able to wear New Balance or North Face but would like to give these a shot.

Your orthotics should correct your pronation. Shouldn't you then be able to wear any neutral shoe?

Still so comfortable, now so damaged, and still I would buy them again

By:
January 10, 2010

One reviewer mentioned that the tough soles on the Patagonia Release would probably outlast the uppers. This photo is the proof. The shoes in this picture have somewhere between four and five hundred miles on them. The soles seem hardly worn, but the fabric around heel is gone, the cushion gutted, with damage also on the side. But I have continued to run happily in these shoes through progressive disintegration for a couple hundred miles - that's how comfortable they still are. These shoes have been through extremes, from snow and slop for miles on end to the driest and dustiest rocky trails punctuated by water crossings, so perhaps subjected to more than normal wear and tear, but I bet that the fabric in the upper could be improved to make this shoe even better over the long haul. I would rather not retire them, but the side wall around the damage is starting to dig into my ankle a bit on the downhills. Then you look at the nearly pristine soles, and feel how comfortable they still are, and you don't want to drop another franklin on shoes. I have never worn a more comfortable shoe for trail running and I will buy them again.

Dug 'Em for a few months

By:
January 13, 2011

UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW:
After owning these for 4 months and wearing them casually a couple times/week, I took them on one, short spring hike and the sole started to come apart (see pic). Seeing as some folks have said that the soles outlasted the upper, I'm guessing this is just a defect on the part of Vibram, but at this price, this should not happen after such a short period.

Original Review:
I've been a hard core Keen guy for a few years now, but I saw the price on these (the $66 ones) and the great reviews so I figured I'd give them a shot. I really like these a lot! Great sole, nice foot bed, lightweight (compared to my last pair of Keens), well constructed - great deal! True to size as well. I typically wear a 10 1/2, ordered a 10 1/2 and they fit perfect. Having sort of a wide foot, it's always a crap shoot ordering footwear online but these fit perfectly.

Follow up to my initial review of this shoe. I was VERY disappointed that after one short hike in these up in the White Mountains (Arethusa Falls loop) a piece of the sole started to come off. Where a lot of folks have said that the soles outlasted the uppers, I'm guessing this was just a defect from Vibram, but at this price it shouldn't happen after just a few months of light everyday use and one short hike.

great shoes

By:

The sizing was spot on. I usually wear 12.5 and 12.5 fits me perfectly. I liked them so much the first time I put them on that I immediately decided to go for a run in them. Sturdy, breath very well, steller approach shoes, and even work well for short walks in the snow (but probably not hiking in the snow since they would get wet after a while).

Enjoy!

Release Trail Shoes

By:
April 22, 2009

I have 2000 mi on the AT and bought the Release after shredding two pairs of Hard Rocks in the White Mtns.

Good shoe. Love the soles especially the spikes for gripping the rocks. First 40mi, I have no blisters, no excessive wear points and overall good comfort.

We will see after another couple hundred but I have retired Hard Rocks for now.

One note. Spikes are protected by a rubber cone and do not appear to bother floors indoors.

Comfy, airy mesh

By:
November 21, 2009

I like these. I use them more for general day-to-day activities rather than trail running, but they're comfortable and go eight hours at a stretch with no problem.
My minor gripe is that slightly longer laces would be good, but what is there does stay tied.
Give 'em a try and walk around home for a day and see if it works for you. Return policy is great!

Second on the laces. I blew mine out at a trailhead and was rockin paracord for a 2-day 14er ascent until I could get back into town to pick up new laces. Still going strong 6 months later!

disappointed

By:
November 19, 2009

I bought these based on the review from the guy who retired his hardrocks. Great design, great materials but inferior workmanship. The tongues are different lengths, and not padded enough. The lacing system doesn't work; the little loops are too long. The top eyelets are too close to the edge and the plastic piece is different on each shoe. Patagonia just doesn't have the history in trail running shoes to compete with montrail and la sportiva and solomon.

I think the tongues are very well padded. My only complaint with lacing system is that they come untied a lot unless you make a double knot. The cosmetic deficiencies you mention do not effect the shoes performance.
