Patagonia Footwear Release Hiking Shoe - Men's - 2009 BCS
Available Colors / Styles
When you're racking up major mileage points on a long day hike or trail run slip into the versatile Patagonia Men’s Release Hiking Shoe. The DWR-treated synthetic mesh upper wicks moisture and protects against light rain and splashy stream crossings as you tear down the path. In addition to neutralizing funky odors, the Ortholite X-40 insole works in conjunction with a triple-density EVA footframe to provide cushioning on the longest days. Patagonia also added a Vibram rubber sole with embedded track spikes to give you solid grip on even the gnarliest terrain.
Bottom Line: Fast, light, and versatile? Look no further.

5 days in the Windrivers, and never wished once that I'd brought my sturdier hikers.

Great shoes and a great partner scrambling in Vedauwoo, Wyo. Vibram soles performed famously on the razor-sharp granite characteristic to the area.
Still so comfortable, now so damaged, and still I would buy them again

One reviewer mentioned that the tough soles on the Patagonia Release would probably outlast the uppers. This photo is the proof. The shoes in this picture have somewhere between four and five hundred miles on them. The soles seem hardly worn, but the fabric around heel is gone, the cushion gutted, with damage also on the side. But I have continued to run happily in these shoes through progressive disintegration for a couple hundred miles - that's how comfortable they still are. These shoes have been through extremes, from snow and slop for miles on end to the driest and dustiest rocky trails punctuated by water crossings, so perhaps subjected to more than normal wear and tear, but I bet that the fabric in the upper could be improved to make this shoe even better over the long haul. I would rather not retire them, but the side wall around the damage is starting to dig into my ankle a bit on the downhills. Then you look at the nearly pristine soles, and feel how comfortable they still are, and you don't want to drop another franklin on shoes. I have never worn a more comfortable shoe for trail running and I will buy them again.

UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW:
After owning these for 4 months and wearing them casually a couple times/week, I took them on one, short spring hike and the sole started to come apart (see pic). Seeing as some folks have said that the soles outlasted the upper, I'm guessing this is just a defect on the part of Vibram, but at this price, this should not happen after such a short period.
Original Review:
I've been a hard core Keen guy for a few years now, but I saw the price on these (the $66 ones) and the great reviews so I figured I'd give them a shot. I really like these a lot! Great sole, nice foot bed, lightweight (compared to my last pair of Keens), well constructed - great deal! True to size as well. I typically wear a 10 1/2, ordered a 10 1/2 and they fit perfect. Having sort of a wide foot, it's always a crap shoot ordering footwear online but these fit perfectly.

Follow up to my initial review of this shoe. I was VERY disappointed that after one short hike in these up in the White Mountains (Arethusa Falls loop) a piece of the sole started to come off. Where a lot of folks have said that the soles outlasted the uppers, I'm guessing this was just a defect from Vibram, but at this price it shouldn't happen after just a few months of light everyday use and one short hike.

Second on the laces. I blew mine out at a trailhead and was rockin paracord for a 2-day 14er ascent until I could get back into town to pick up new laces. Still going strong 6 months later!

I think the tongues are very well padded. My only complaint with lacing system is that they come untied a lot unless you make a double knot. The cosmetic deficiencies you mention do not effect the shoes performance.
Change me.
