I love this coat. I returned the North Face Triple C in favor of this one, which is way warmer. About three weeks ago, in minus 9 degrees Celsius in New Haven, the North Face coat let in all the cold air, but this one kept me nice and warm. It has a long zipper all the way to the bottom, the sleeves are sufficiently long even for tall people (inner cuffs would have been a nice improvement, but I was warm even without them), there's no problem with the snap on the neck (it was probably improved as a result of previous reviews), and the hood may not be the most stylish thing on earth, but in this type of coat I find that they never are. It keeps your head warm even without a scarf. As for the sizing, I am tall (1.78 meters, almost 5'9')' and weigh 67 Kg (about 147). At first, I got the L but found it too wide. I returned it for the M, which fits just perfectly. It isn't too tight even over a shirt plus a woolen cardigan or blazer. It gives you a very nice slim figure, not puffy in any way. It goes all the way below the knees and is just a bit smaller in the waistline, so you don't look like one of those shapeless sleeping bags. I wore it in Manhattan in the evenings and felt that although it is perhaps not as stylish as my woolen coat (down coats could never be that stylish), I could easily wear this coat on the way to the opera. And when I had to fly back home to warmer weather, it folded into a pretty small item and fit perfectly in my suitcase. Absolutely the coat to buy!
well made. However, the cut is lousy!

I wish the cut is less like a dress on the bottom which is very unfashionable. I'm in the NYC area and this is not the "in" look. I 'd much rather have a waist adjustment but I bought this due to the 800 fill power since I'm cold all the time. Also, it's very long and I'm on the petite side.
The waist area is a bit snug and I'm on the thin side.
Excellent coat, should have inner cuffs

I returned the Eddie Bauer long coat in favor of this one, and I am generally glad I did. The zipper goes down much farther than any of the other makes of long coats and really keeps the cold and wind out. The hood is great, although I didn't expect to like it. With other coats, the hood comes so far over my face that I can't see. This one slips up when you need it and down into a shawl collar when not needed--very neat. I didn't have a problem closing the neck of the coat; maybe that has improved since some of the reviews. It is extremely stylish, though very long; so anyone shorter than my 5'6" may find it cumbersome--I have to hold it up when climbing steps. It is very good looking, light and fits well (I am 138 lbs and got a large). I have only two problems with it. First, there are not enough pockets--true for many women's coats. This could really benefit from an additional outside or inside breast pocket. My biggest objection, however, is that there are no inner cuffs for the sleeves, nor do they cinch down in any way. This means that without long sweater sleeves or long gloves, you will feel the cold come in through the sleeve cuffs. An interior hidden cuff would make this coat almost perfect---I may have to add some.

what is the down #? HOW SNUG FITTING IS THE COAT ? Temperture range it is recommended for?

800 fill goose down. Fairly snug? Temperature range is tough since it's so subjective. My wife and I live in Utah, and this is her coat she pulls out of the closet for our coldest days and she seems to be comfy in it down to 0 Fahrenheit or so..

have tried it in zero weather with a sweater and turtleneck underneath--quite warm and cozy. Maybe a bit snug if you don't order up a size--i have other Pategonia and know to do that. I am 5'6" 138 lbs and wear a Large--it is just right.
Stop looking, this is the coat to buy.

If you're looking for a warm long coat this is the one. This coat has a very sophisticated simple look. I'm tall and thin; 6'0 and purchased the XL and I have plenty of room in the sleeves and more than enough room to layer if I needed to. I love that I don't look like a puff ball walking around or a walking sleeping bag; it's not puffy at all. I'm very happy with this coat. I spend a lot of time walking my dogs and sometimes in 26 degree weather I have to actually unzip it because I'm too warm. Some reviewers have mentioned the feathers have come out; I've not had that problem. Way to go Patagonia!

This coat is beautiful but after 2.5 winters with it, I really regret the purchase.
The hood makes a pretty collar, but it is just plain ugly up. Worse: it is close to useless - there is no way to cinch it closed and there is a big gap at the neck.
I am a city dweller and walk a lot in the cold, and this problem limits the usefulness of the coat to me. I don't want to carry hats and scarves when I am going in and out of stores, for example.
I have had Lands End, Eddie Bauer and North Face coats and never had a complaint about the hood. I wish had purchased the Triple C instead.
I gave three stars because it is attractive and I notice that many people do not seem to use their hoods.

Hey All
I live in Northern Ontario and I'm looking at a coat that can handle -30 and then the wind chill. Any suggestions?

Beth,
With the hood up and some warm layers underneath this coat would do a pretty awesome job at keeping you warm in some very chilly temps.

You might want to consider the Patagonia Tres. It has a similar (same?) down parka but it zips into a water/windproof hard shell. My wife wore this in similar temps in Minnesota and was very pleased.

This long down parka is really doing the trick in the cold New England winter. I bought it so I could walk home from my work (about 1 mile) without having to have excessive layers on, and it's been great.
I originally bought both the M and L to compare (I am 5'6" and about 155lbs) and ended up keeping the large because the medium felt a smidge too small in the arm holes/chest area. I think the medium would have kept my legs a bit warmer as it would have been more snug around the legs, but as is, I am VERY pleased with this purchase.
Patagonia downtown parka is wonderful

I can not even begin to bemoan my down parka woes. I had to order and return three others before I took a chance on this one, having read the reviews. Boy, was I happily surprised. This down coat is actually flattering. I know it's hard to believe and I thought it just looked great on the models because theyre so skinny, but it looks fantastic even on regular me who is a 5'5" normal sized six. The fabric is lovely, a sort of satiny soft hand without being flimsy. The Prussian blue is true to Patagonias web site photos, a deep blue with very slight greenish undertones and slight black undertones. Sort of the night sky color right after sun set. This coat is very cozy and warm. I tried it with no layers but a thin tee on a freezing day and found that I was asking too much for below zero in Michigan but, when I wear an camisole, long sleeve shirt and a very thin sweater I am totally warm with no bulk or weight. In other words, sensible but not excessive layers. The only thing I am unhappy about is the lack of a snap way up high on the neck/hood area to keep drafts out, something other reviews mentioned. Are you listening, Patagonia? I mean this coat is not exactly cheap and it annoys me that I have to spend money to add this but given that this is the only fault I could find, I am very happy. As far as size goes, I am glad I read reviews and got a small. Normally I am between a small and a medium with chest 34 1/2 waist 30 hips 37. Usually my waist is bigger than the size chart small but my hips and chest match. The small fits snug but very pretty, even with a normal weight sweater. More important, this coat fits my short torso really well. Often I have to order petite sizes which then have too short sleeves. I say go for it, it's worth the money!

With few layers beneath, I think someone's regular size will do, but I want the option of sweaters and vests if the going gets really cold, and I order up a size.
great coat

First of all, customer service is awsome! Thank you!
Have been wearing my Patagonia coat for 6 weeks now & meant to brag on it a lot sooner! I could not be happier with the warmtn it provides and the shape. Wonderful detail: the zipper works from two sides, so you can create a slit at the bottom for brisk walking or more air. In regards to sizing: I am 5'.6", arround 135lbs w/ fairly wide shoulders - love size M. First I had ordered a size S and was surprised how narrow it was cut, especially since I read all the previous reviews about sizing. Also, when the coat sits too tight, as in S on me, the arms tend to ride up with every move. With a thick sweater underneath I felt like a saussage in casing. My recommendation would be, unless you are very small or petite, do not get the S.
About color!!: I ordered a grey and want you to know, the shade on the website does not match reality, in fact it's a different color of a medium to darker grey. I could not believe the difference. It was a surprise I had to get used to, but then embraced this shade. The only other thing I could wish for, would be a slightly larger hoody -for women with a big head and lots of hair. Some previeous reviews spoke about the buttons being flimsy. They do give that feel at first, since the material/fabric is thin and I tend to open them carefully, as not to create too much pull on the fabric because they do snap very tight. However after getting used to opening and closing them it seems to be easy and no damage so far. Last word about the zipper: it needs to warm up to you- give it some use. Main overall plus: it's warm, yet light and stylish!Great buy for years of use. Love this coat!
PS. Also, I think it's great that this coat keeps people wondering who makes this product!- no pretentious verbage, just a small name on the sleeve, hardly visible.

Not for minus 21 C degrees weather ....

This was actually my second choice as the one I really wanted (based on reviews) was the "Canada Goose Mystique parka" which seems to be sold out for the season - apparently the coats were in some stores since July.
I do not find that this coat is made for -21 degrees Celsius and colder temperatures (approx - 6 degrees Fahrenheit) as was the case in Ottawa 2 days ago - and there will be more days like this ahead.
I felt the wind and cold but by keeping moving and not spending too much time outdoors - this coat worked. Also, I have long arms and as there is not tapered fit at the wrist, part of my skin was exposed to the wind and cold. It would be nice to have recessed rib-knit cuffs to keep out the cold or longer length on the arms.
I like the stylish, snug fit and it will be a good coat for up to minus 10 degrees weather, but for colder temperatures a warmer coat is needed.

Totally agree with LueBubba!
I live in Calgary and Patagonia Downtown parka was not warm enough for me as well. Last winter, when we had -35C weather, I tried every kind of down jacket/parka/coat available in Calgary stores, and Patagonia turned out to be the most unsuitable for such a cold weather. I was freezing 10 minutes after I walked outside in this jacket; my legs were cold despite the length of the jacket; my shoulders and upper arms were freezing as well; and its funny hood and fancy front closure did not help either to keep me warm!
After trying out an expensive Canada Goose long coat (forgot the model name), as well as The North Face's Triple C coat, I ended up buying Eddie Bauer's Arctic down coat, and was very glad I did so.
P.S. I also have a previous model of The North Face Metropolis Parka, and it is very warm for me to wear from October until April. However, sometimes during winter months, it is just not long enough and warm enough for me.

I first tried Eddie Bauer's Arctic Down long coat, and found it heavier but not warmer. It has inner cuffs on the sleeves, which is good, but the zipper does not go down all the way and my legs were cold. The hood was huge and literally blinded me when up. I returned it for this coat and love it. This is lighter, but as warm or warmer for icy Colorado mountain nights.
My wife loves this parka

Keeps her warm, fashionable enough to wear around the city and much better quality than the TNF it replaces. Keep in mind that it is not a super-warm coat like a Canadian Goose or something, but it is a great mix of style and function with Patagonia's quality and warranty.
I recommend highly to any woman
