Face Winter with Grace and Poise.

Winter seemed like it would be fun until back-to-back storms and howling arctic winds came rolling in to make your walk to and from work anything but pleasant. When winter throws its worst at you, slip into the Patagonia Women's Downtown Parka and put the season back in its place. Insulated with ethically sourced down and made of a recycled polyester fabric, the jacket not only keeps you warm and cozy, but it keeps your conscience feeling warm and fuzzy too. With a slim cut, the Downtown delivers a flattering fit, while its full-length design keeps everything from your head to your knees nice and warm. An oversized collar provides a dramatic look that keeps your neck and chin warm, and converts into a hood for additional weather protection.

    Sizing for the hourglass shape

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: L

Originally ordered a medium after reading the reviews, figured it would fit well enough. It almost did, just not across my chest (34D). Thanks to Back Country for a rapid exchange, the roomier L is very comfortable across the chest and is longer, which I appreciate. Not much difference that I can see in the shoulders and the arm length. I think body shape is important to consider in addition to your weight/height. Comfy coat, I am less afraid of NYC's winter this year!

    Warm, stylish coat!

Great color & length, very happy with this jacket so far. It's particularly warm & I like the slender fit. The zipper pockets are a bit tricky to open/close at times but overall very pleased.

Worked for my daughter but not for me.

Daughter is30, 34C, slender and athletic. Nice styling with high collar, partially hidden monks hood, and deep pockets. Hit her below knee and with her height it looks great. I had a little trouble with zipper but she didn't. Deep Mahogany nice near neutral color, no fake fur needed. Will keep her toasty in winter while supervising school playground in CO mountains. Replaces a Pantagonia long down coat that she wore for years.

But on me M too tight especially in the chest, and L too roomy all the way around. (I'm 5'6" 150lbs 36B a little pear shaped). Had the same size issues with Marmot Montreaux. The basin + range Evergreen and Skyline style coats did fit me nicely (but didn't keep them for other reasons, see my other reviews for details). Thought the longer length of Downtowner looked a little dowdy on me at my height, without higher heeled boots. .

Nice Coat for mild winter weather

I really loved the design as it is very "city chick" for being a down coat. It is also fitted on very nicely. But I did find it had to little down filling for cold winter weather. It also did not have a lining in the back which means that wind will blow through it where the seams are. It surprised me that a coat at that price level coming from a supposed quality provider as Patagonia doesn’t have lining all around in a winter coat. Where I live we have cold and long winters so warmth is more important than design. I therefore returned it and went for the Marmot Montreaux coat which is warmer and seems to manage snow and rain better but doesn't look as nice. If you don’t have to be out to much in cold winter conditions this is a nice city coat for winter walks. I usually wear medium and I had plenty of room to add a warm sweater.

Great coat, does fit a little small!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This coat is really great. Not too hot for warmish weather (in the 30s) but warm enough for when it's really cold. The elastics inside the sleeves keep the wind from blowing up your arms! I find the collar feels weird against the back of my neck if I have a scarf on (it's a lot of bulk), but that unzipping the hood and just letting it hang loose fixes this. The one thing I'd tell you about this coat is that, unless you're very confident in the newer Patagonia sizing, you might want to consider sizing up. I was ALWAYS an XS in Patagonia (I'm 5'3", 110 pounds, always a size 0-2), and the XS was tight when I tried it on with a thick sweater and put a few things in the pockets. I sent it back and tried the S instead; and although the fit isn't as adorably fitted, the coat now fits over a warm sweater and can fit my phone in the pockets, so: win. Also, this coat is really cute. You can wear it fashionably in a city!

      Wonderful coat

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

As usual, Patagonia has the best fabric, the best features, and the best fit. Their sleeves are always a little bit longer than their competitors'; which is great for someone with a 5'9 frame. The coat is like a warm hug, and has room underneath for layers. Although the hood would be difficult to open while wearing the coat, it's design is ingenious. It covers my head, shelters my face, and stays on in wind. The ash-gray color camouflages the tiny bits of down that inevitably escape through the fabric of a down coat. This is the first "grown up coat" I have purchased in more than 20 years, and it was worth the wait. Great price at backcountry.com, too!

      Super Warm!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this for my sister in law who walks 1 mile to work every day in the Montana cold weather. She was looking for a longer down jacket that would keep her warm on the really cold mornings. She absolutely loves this jacket. It is a little less boxy than other jackets she looked at, as the waist tapers in slightly and the bottom flares out every so slightly. Also, the hood/collar is a great feature. When the hood is stowed away, the collar is still a little high, making this slightly more fashionable than the average long down jacket. When it gets extra cold, the hood comes out to offer additional coverage. The jacket is also DWR finished, so she can stay dry even if a snowstorm rolls in. The jacket is true to size - she is a true medium, and that size fit her perfectly. The only small complaint I could make about this jacket is that it is definitely long. I'm 5'1" and tried on the jacket before giving it to her, and found it to be a little too long for me - almost mid-calf length. If you are super short, you may have a hard walking or getting to the zipper down by your feet.

      As warm as can be

This thing is absolutely amazing when it comes to warmth. It looks nice on, isn't too "Michelin Man" . It fits well, I ordered a Medium but normally wear a small. I needed a Medium for the shoulders to be comfortable. The arms are the perfect length, going slightly over your hands. Perfect for a chilly day. Only thing I would change is bringing the jacket up about 3-4 inches. I have has some people say "that is a long jacket" and nothing else. Thanks, I think?

      Keeps you warm!

This is the ultimate down jacket. Like wrapping up in a nice down blanket before heading out to brave the cold. Running around town, walking the dog in a blizzard, standing on the side of the ski run watching your kids...you're covered! Toasty warm down, flattering feminine cut, zipper hand pockets and a hood that fits nicely over a beanie. It is longer than any jacket I've worn on a regular basis. With that being said I was careful with the bottom zipper on the hem. Unzipping it a bit allows for a little more freedom of movement, if needed. The hood stows nicely with an undercover zipper and snap down strap on the inside, giving a nice tall collar. Overall, this jacket makes a long winter certainly more comfortable!

      Disappointing quality

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The insulation gets out, producing huge amount of lint. Looks awful from inside and outside.

      Love this coat

      • Size Bought: small

I live in northern Michigan with extremes of weather conditions and this coat has been great. It is very comfortable, fits true to size (I and 5'4", 120 lb and bought a small) and keeps me warm. The only reason I didn't put a "5" is like noted by another reviewer the zipper sometimes gets caught in the lining near the top. Otherwise it's perfect and this has only been a minor nuisance.

Wanted it to work but it doesn't

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love the look and feel of this warm coat but the zipper keeps getting stuck in the lining. I have tried protecting the zipper from the under lining but no luck. Every time I pull the zipper to the very top, it gets stuck on the top. Twice, I have had someone else help me get out of the coat because I am stuck in it. I've worn it three times and I have been annoyed three times. Back it goes. As an aside, I tried all of the other Patagonia coats and did not have this problem. Additionally, the hood is not a true hood, more like a lovely tall collar but it does not reach up over my head to keep it dry. Seems like a silly design feature to have half a hood! I returned it for the Down With It.

      Great down jacket

I love this jacket! I had a hard time deciding between all the different brands and styles of down jackets and finally chose this one and I am happy I did. I am 5'4" 120 lbs and size small is perfect. It is a very flattering jacket..not boxy like some of the others I have tried.

      great update

I had the downtown loft parka, xs black, from 2010 and was very happy with it. This has some nice updates. Fits a little shorter and a little smaller than my older one. I love the hood/high collar. I'm 5'2'' 115 lbs with broad shoulders and a skier's booty. Small fits well with room for layering underneath and still has tailored look/fit. Beautiful coat. I will live in this.

      Zipper sticks

The coat is fine--there's nothing particularly special about it, but it seems like it would keep you warm. I returned it, however, because the zipper kept jamming around the collar area when I tried it on. Both times I zipped it all the way up the zipper got stuck. Once I had to slip the coat off without unzipping it (because I couldn't). Definitely less than ideal. I don't recommend this coat.

      Funny fit but very warm

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small

I bought this coat last winter during the "polar vortex" complete with several days of below zero temps and/or windchills. As I am from the warmer climes, I wasn't sure what to expect as my own freezer does not reach such temps. This coat is so warm it's not even funny. I had winter boots that came up to my knees, my ski mittens and a warm hat and I was quite toasty even when outside for more than 5-7 minutes at a time.

Negatives for me are: hood does not tighten and is quite large but I have big curly hair so this has been not too much of a problem for me. When I get hit with a big gust of wind, the hood does often threaten to blow off. But I also generally wear a kind of large rasta type hat to cover my crowning glory and the hood fits perfectly well for me after the addition. Not everyone has such a blessing (or curse) so it may not work for them. Like the other reviewer, the fit is a bit snug but truly I really don't care that much as I am so warm. For me, despite the negatives, this coat was a game changer for me living in the north.

      Very Disappointed

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I am a size Medium in mostly all brands of clothing. As I never got to wear the jacket out I will not be able to comment on the warmth

#no way to cinch the hood to your face

#no way to hold the hood in place when the wind blows

#hood is way too large and trust me you will get uncomfortable during windy days

#the chest and tummy part had very weird fit. Even though the jacket it self was a good fit but from outside it made me look like.... ugh I can't even explain the weird fit. I think they needed to give more space or some style to the chest area. When I wore it my friends agreed it looked too tight across the chest and tummy area.

#not snug in the bottom. Hips below was nice and long as I wanted...but the space was huge...when the wind blows...you'd want that jacket to hug the hips and thighs to give warmth and not have wind seeping in.

Hope it helps. The color is lovely though.

      Will have to return.

      Patagonia Downtown Loft Parka

      • Fit: True to size

This is a fabulous coat! I am 5'8", 150 lb. size 12 clothing. I purchased this coat in XL. I tried on every single coat at Macy's. None looked or fit as well as THIS coat. It feels luxurious, the length is fabulous on my arms, and I love the fact that the hem is not straight across and it is very flattering to my figure which I have no 'waist' it makes me appear that I do.

It is longer in the back; same on the sleeves (longer on the outside towards my outer hand) and the length is actually long enough to pass my wrist bone. The two side zipped pockets are slim and flattering. I am only sad that I could not get this in beige or bronze and had to choose another dark, dingy-colored coat to my collection.

      Unanswered Question

Is there a warmth difference between the downtown parka and down with it parka?
Do they both have a tall collar?
How do they compare to the warmth of the North face Arctic parka?
      Thanks!

What are the major differences between the Patagonia Downtown Parka and the Down With It Parka? Are the lengths the same?

      Best Answer

      Julie,

The Downtown Parka is longer than the Down With It Parka. Downtown will go to past your knees, or a little longer, depending on your height. The Down With Parka is knee length, or a little shorter if you are tall. The Also, Downtown will have a less puffy look, due to it's smaller baffling construction.

Does this hit the ankle or mid-length? I saw the same one at REI page that says it's a mid length coat but this says full length.

If my coat doesn't fit, how do I return it?
