Down Special Edition Sweater - Men's

Pack up the 10-ounce Patagonia Down Special Edition Sweater in your climbing pack when you need some insulation but don’t want to carry the weight of a normal down jacket. This ultralight water-resistant jacket is stuffed with 900-Fill premium European goose down and holds in your body heat like you’re a potato wrapped in tin-foil. The translucent nylon ripstop shell holds up to the abuse of alpine climbing and fends off stray drops and flakes while providing a unique X-ray-vision-look for base camp. Whether at a chilly campsite or a frigid camp IV, the Down Special’s hem drawcords and elastic cuffs seal out the frostbiting air, and once you get warm the sweater stuffs into its own interior stretch mesh pocket with a carabiner clip-in loop.

Bottom Line: Ultralight, ultra-warm, ultra-awesome.

I agree..completely over priced...a lot of the patadouchey gear I see seems more color oriented for the female hikers out there? a bit feminine in my book

Nathan, thanks for the pics. It's always helpful to see what the gear really looks like. The stock photos don't always give a true picture. I appreciate you taking the time to take and post the photos...Cam

Special Edition Down Sweater on body

on body view of the Special Edition Down Sweater. 900 fill down and a shell fabric that's twice the strength and half the weight of the regular down sweater. Definitely not for everyone, but those that can appreciate it will be very stoked. Just one color way per season for this fall and next spring only.

Jason,
A hooded version of the Limited Edition Down Sweater was never created. However the Ultralight Down Hooded Jacket currently available is the same shell fabric, and just slightly less down.

Patagonia Down Special Edition

By:
February 18, 2011

I purchased this jacket primarily as a layer for cross-country, alpine touring, during rest stops.
After two (2) trips, I can fairly report the following: this jacket is perfect for intended use, very light and compact. If you are traveling in very cold conditions ( -10C or less) this layer may not be sufficient for extended stops or in very windy conditions and additional layers may be required.

Love the jacket. Super warm. Won't ever need another mid layer again. Very light and compressible. Do not have anything negative to say about it.

This made me feel special

By:
March 1, 2011

This Patagonia Special Edition down sweater is luxurious indulgence. Worth the money? Yes. Be advised: I'm 6'3", have 35" sleeve length in dress shirts, and usually order XL in Patagonia outerwear. In this sweater, I needed XXL to avoid appearing as if I was wearing my smaller brother's clothing. I love this - it makes me feel special.

Save $75 ...

By:

Save your $75 dollars and just go with the original Down Sweater. I bought this jacket last week and have compared it side-by-side with the original Down Sweater and don't see any difference whatsoever other than the Special Edition below a little lighter. The down fluff of the jacket appears to be the same, though it's supposed to be 900-fill. THe shell also seems to be the same ripstop pattern that is on the original jacket. Obviously, I've yet to wear it in cold conditions, but I anticipate not noticing a difference there either.

This or the new Ultralight Down Shirt? I am looking to add a jacket to my backpacking quiver, and right now my backpacking jacket is my Nano Puff Pullover. I do mostly 3-season trips in the Southern California area, and shoulder season and summer trips in the Sierras, so temperatures never get crazy cold, and rain is minimal and usually fairly predictable & manageable.

The SE Down Sweater would be about the same weight as the Nano Puff, and warmer, although I'm not sure how much so.

The Down Shirt would save 4-5 ounces over both, but would not be as warm as the Nano Puff (per Ty, about 2/3 as warm), and even less so than this.

The SE Down also adds handwarmer pockets and a more durable shell. The UL Down Shirt gives me the pullover effect that I have grown to love with the Nano Puff.

The cost is nearly the same, so if I'm considering shelling out $250 for the Down Shirt, I thought I'd might as well consider this at $275. I can only afford/justify one or the other...

Man, the warmth is totally subjective - I mentioned to someone from Patagonia that I responded that the Down Shirt was 2/3's as warm as the Nano Puff and they said they think they're equal in warmth. I think the discrepancy is how down wears vs Synthetic... Down is so comfortable in a variety of temperatures so although you might not be cold in it, you wouldn't perceive yourself as being hot either - while with the synthetic is traps the heat differently

The Down Sweater is definitely warmer than the Nano Puff, and the Special Edition Down Sweater is a little warmer than the regular Down Sweater. So on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the Fitz Roy Down Hoody, maybe the SE Down Sweater is at 8.5, Down Sweater an 8, Nano Puff is a 6, and Down Shirt is a 5. ???

Gents, thank you for your input. You're certainly not making this easy on me, though, LOL. I rolled to the Patagonia store today and looked at my options (although they are sadly not carrying the UL Down Shirt). It's a nice place to try on gear before I order it from Backcountry.

I am still weighing my options, and am also considering just going with the standard Down Sweater, which fit well and felt great. The price point at $200 doesn't hurt either, and as Ty said, I think it would be a nice option if I decide not to roll with the Nano Puff. I am still wondering, I guess, if the Down Sweater would be warmer than the Nano Puff, and if so, by how much? I'm okay with a ballpark number...

The choices are tough, see the attached photo of the Spring 2011 colors, including a view of the Nano Puffs and Down Sweaters. The biggest surprise for me was how nice the Ultramarine was; I really liked that and would consider it for a Down Sweater or Nano Puff, too bad it's not available as a Nano Puff Hoody...

Tough call! I would have a rough time telling anyone who's interested in buying a Down Shirt not to buy one - it's probably the coolest thing Patagonia is making right now. And on the other hand the Special Edition Down sweater is a kick ass piece in it's own right and this is the last season it will ever be available. Soooo... for your personal kit seems like maybe the SE Down Sweater would be provide a nice different option for when you leave your Nano Puff at home? You'll definitely love the Down Shirt though and wear it all the time.

Color offered...

By:
September 28, 2010

Seriously - what is Patagonia smoking? I'm sure this may be a "tad" better than the regular down sweater, but "hello", "FOG"? Nothing could be more bland and ridiculous-looking than the color they're offering for this jacket. Talk about showing dirt easily. Patagonia's color offerings for most of their line-up flat-out stinks. I love their products, own a few, but I own a TON more North Face, Marmot, and other assorted brands because they offer comparable products at less cost with colors/patterns that have some life to them. Patagonia is missing the boat on this. Why would someone want to spend MORE for something that looks crappy?

While I would word this a lot differently, I tend to agree with the sentiment. I've skipped many Patagonia products because of their color schemes. Not because of blandness, certainly. With colors like purple and aquamarine, gecko green and bali blue, they can hardly be considered bland, even if this particular product doesn't have those colors yet. It's because of those bright in-your-face colors I look for other manufacturers. I prefer subdued and earth tone colors, dark greens, tans, browns. In addition, working for a government agency means none of the colors are appropriate for work use. I'm very impressed with Patagonia's responsible business practices, the common threads program, and the quality of their gear, but the ultrabright colors need some color balance on the subdued side for those of us who would prefer to not stick out when we're out in the wild.

To each their own but I bought my SE down sweater in large part because of the Fog color. It is very unique and I don't believe it will get dirtly quickly. It is darker in person than the pictures here represent.
