The Patagonia Men's Down Jacket offers the kind of warmth that winter wanderers need. Close the full-length zipper that is backed by a full-length flap, to trap every blessed ounce of heat your body produces. For shady belays and cold, clear days on the slopes, the Down Jacket use 700-fill European Goose feathers to retain warmth. Reinforcement on the shoulders and sleeves add durability to this personal heater. Deep hand warmer pockets allow you to heat up your fingers after scraping ice off of the car or completing a summit bid.
Bottom Line: Get down but not out with this extra warm jacket from Patagonia.
This is a great down jacket! Never owned a warmer coat - and believe me I own a TON of coats. Great design and true fit. This jacket is well designed from draw strings in the right places and the attention to detail is overly evident.
Perfect puffball coat for backcountry travel. Fleece neck lining and fleece-lined pockets are super warm and soft. It comes with a stuff sack too, so you can put it in your pack without losing a ton of space. Also doubles as a nice pillow when you're in your sleeping bag. Highly recommended, unless you really need a hood. I have this one in Stainless, and it gets dark stains where it touches oily skin (which is pretty common when backpacking). This is common for all ripstop nylon though.
I bought my son the Patagonia mens jacket in small and got it when it was 20% off. I need to exchange it for a med will I lose the 20% discount on the new coat?
Yep. You'll get refunded what you paid and if it's not on sale, you'll pay more for the new one. You might get a Gearhead to give you a break on Live Chat.

This jacket is awesome!!! I took my dogs for a 2 mile walk in 20 degree weather, buy the end I was sweating. The only thing is that the sleeves are a little shorter than I would like. I'm 5'11 200lbs and I got a large, fits just right.
I've been really impressed by this jacket so far. I've used it for camping, climbing trips, skiing, walking to the coffee shop, etc. The coldest its seen was about -10 or so with wind-chill (no shell). It's durable, warmer than your toaster oven, the zippers don't snag easily, it fits well and it makes a great pillow in a pinch. I actually almost prefer it to my pillow at home. I'm 6'4" 193 lbs, so pretty long and lanky on the whole and the Large fits me well. Yeah, the waist is way baggier than I'd like but I figure that's what the draw-cords are there for. They've got to make these things so they'll fit me now and me in 30 years when I've got a beer belly right? Exactly. Who's got the next round?
This thing provides excellent warmth. Have used it winter backpacking in -20F, and with a thin baselayer and Monkey Man fleece under it, was quite warm just sitting around campsite. My only personal gripe is that it is bulky in the chest on me. However, I own the medium and am generally in between sizes small and medium, so Patagonia can't be blamed for this.
it needs a shell if you want it to be in any way water proof. i mean, DONT wear it in rain if you don't have a shell.. and as for WHICH shell -- i don't think that there is a specific compatible shell, but more over, since it is a puffy down jacket, a nice and spacious hardshell (as opposed to form fitting) would probably be your best bet.
After research a bunch of down jackets I decided on the Patagonia. It was a little small so I returned it, so I can only comment on how it fit. The sleeves, as well as the overall fit, were short (I ordered a Medium and I'm 5'9, 160 lb). I can say I really liked the full fleece lining on the inside of the collar and the hand warmer pockets. I have since tried on a Large and was swimming in it.
This is the best down jacket I have tried so far. I tried the Marmot Ama Dablam (didn't fit right) and the The North Face Aconcagua (not warm enough) and the Patagonia down is just right. It is a little bit shorter than I would like, but it's not enough to deter me from keeping it. I am 6'0"/165 lbs and got a Medium; everything from Patagonia fits me in Medium, so this is standard Patagonia fit. Haven't had it long enough to tell about durability, but it seems like it will hold up nicely, the fabric seems sturdier than some down jackets that seem as if they would rip easily. Recommended.
I've owned Mountain Hardwear, Golite, and The North Face down in the past and none of them held up like this jacket. It's a bit heavier of a down jacket due to the thicker ripstop, but it's worth it when you aren't having to patch your jacket holes with duct tape all the time. Highly recommended jacket.
From the Patagonia website - the jacket has 615g (21.7oz) of fill. I haven't bought the jacket so don't want to rate it; I just wanted to share this info. But apparently I have to rate it...so...uh, I think I'll give it a 5 of 5.
probably pushing too warm at those tempsPatagoniaCommunity: I just wore mine tonight to the grocery store with a Capilene 3 zip-neck underneath. It actually was 40 degrees out and the jacket was great. I was just walking (no aerobic activity), but I definitely didn't get too hot. I think anything warmer than 45 or so and you might want to think about something lighter like maybe the Patagonia Down Sweater.
I recently got this jacket and it is very warm! Another great thing about it is the quality shell. I went camping last weekend and I was going through a bunch of thorny bushes and my jacket got caught on one pretty good. I thought for sure I was going to get a hole and loose down, but no such thing happened and when I thoroughly inspected it I couldn't even find the area it got snagged on.
Another great thing is the jacket is super light and packs down into the stuff sack so you can bring it along no problem.
I would definitely recommend this jacket over any other in this price range!
Bullet proof. Comfortable. Worn it for sub-zero fly-fishing, ski warm-up, garden chores, going to the gym and out on Saturday night...It's perfect...not too much, not too little. And Patagonia gets how to make really "green" gear.
Rob - Cleaning this jacket should be no big deal. Either handwash it or use a commercial front-load washer. Use soap made specifically for down items (REI, Nikwax, etc.). Hit the rinse cycle twice to get every trace of soap out. Dry it in a commercial dryer on low to medium heat with a few tennis balls.
I originally bought the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Jacket, however it was a little bulky compared to this jacket. I am glad I upgraded to this jacket. It is warmer, lighter, and way more comfy.
This down jacket is a lifesaver in cold weather. This jacket provides awesome warmth, comfort, style and packability. It's perfect for both - backcountry yurts and city streets.
