The big daddy Crag Daddy.
The Crag Daddy Backpack is one of Patagonia's biggest climbing-specific packs for a whole lot of gear. With careful packing you can get climbing ropes, double racks, draws, food, layers, and more into the 45-liter Crag Daddy. A full-length center zipper opens the Crag Daddy's main compartment wide, so you can find your belay device underneath all the cams. For comfort, Patagonia added cushy and breathable Air Flow mesh at the back panel, waist belt, and shoulder straps.
There's also a lightweight aluminum frame sheet to give support for heavy loads, and you can remove it for quick trips to the local crags. Large reinforced grab handles let you drag the Crag Daddy under routes quickly and easily, and the side compression straps accommodate extra climbing ropes. The Crag Daddy also features two stretch side pockets for water bottles, a zippered side pocket for climbing guides, and an internal stash pocket for your electronics and valuables.

Good size, light weight
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Only used it a few times so far, it fits all youll need easily. 60m rope, draws, extra shoes, extra layers, helmet inside the main zip pocket. Could wars the helmet and squeeze a trad rack in. Side pockets hold two liters of water and shoes in the other.
Only con is it uses lightish weight nylon, no draging this through the dirt carelessly.
good size, comfy, pockets, easy access
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
Exactly what I was looking for: one large zipper for easy access on top. I can stuff everything in I need to for a day at the crag. Room for water bottles on the outside. Additional zippered storage for snacks, etc. Also able to carry a rope on top if needed. Very comfy to carry. Good quality.
The CRAG BAG
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Holds all you need for multi-pitch day: trad rack, nuts, cams, tricams, slings, helmet, rope, lunch, first aid kit, extra clothes, water bottles. Very comfortable load distribution, and ease of access.
a light and easy Travel Bag
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Great bag for travel, weekend with a little hiking. For a photo traveller, this holds lots of gear in great variation. What I mean is, it holds a DSLR kit, gopro kit, couple of clothing stuff sacks, my dopp kit, small tripod in one side pocket, and a full size nalgene in the other. This keeps is flexible without having to reconfigure a 'camera backpack' for different gear/ different environs. Just a big easy open space that carries well. I dig it.
Confortable and well built
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
It really surprise me how it feels in the back. Is not as usual to find a crag bag that take in account the comfort.
The main compartiment is big but the zippered pocket are kind of small. The outside meshed pocket are also huge, very deep, great for bottles or shoes.
The materials are great, that's very clear, good plastic, good zip, good straps, good clothes.
Although the main zip is almost end-to-end it isn't as comfortable as it would be really end-to-end, a 10 extra centimeters and it would be perfect.
I would love that it included some external daisy for hanging extra stuff, an external elastic mesh for the helmet, and some internal hook for organizing quickdraws.
Not bad but........
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
Why only a single ziper on the long front zip !!! Kinda bummed on that also more pockets would be nice but overall very comfortable pack .
Is there a rope tarp included with the bag?
No there is not.
How would you rate this as a travel pack? It looks like it could fit in an overhead compartment and I'm assuming it's pretty good as a pack.
Its great. I use it specifically for travel. I keep 2 camera kit bags inside, 2 ditty bags of clothes , toiletry kit, big gorilla pod on one side pocket, large nalgene in the other. The big huge zipper was a major selling point- getting at my stuff quickly.
Can you actually fit a rope inside the pack or would you strap the rope on the outside?
Hey sarp501791,
This pack is certainly capable of fitting a rope inside.
