A classic core layer with a dose of sheep-inspired style.

Like clockwork, the wind ramps up its game once you get to camp, so zip up the windproof Patagonia Classic Retro-X Vest and start cooking your backcountry feast. Fuzzy, recycled polyester fleece holds in your body heat nicely, especially when layered under a ski jacket, but the breathable, wind-blocking barrier just atop the mesh lining gives you the protection you need off the grid. Then around the fire, you can trade off warming your hands in the front pockets and jamming on the harmonica you stashed in the chest pocket.

    Bro, you need this

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The vest is real nice, I wear it to the ballpark, I wear to the dog park and sometimes I wear it to the coffee shop where the hipsters get totes jelly about my mountain swag being on fleek. Oh yeah, I also wear it before I ride and as a mid layer in the Arctic. Here's a picture of it keeping me real warm while hanging out with the #adventurebrothers. As you can see this sleeveless jacket optimizes my arms range of motion during aggressive fetch and any other activity that requires my hands to go over my head ie jumping jacks or dancing to YMCA.

    Once More with Feeling

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

I love this vest. I would have one in every color if it wouldn't take up an absurd amount of room in my closet (and dent the ol' bank account). I bought the men's version as I liked the color offerings better, also because the pockets were larger; weird but true.

This vest has been the perfect throw-on layer over top of hoodies, t-shirts, swim-suits, you name it. I wear it almost every day, so often that my students become a little alarmed if I'm not wearing it on my way into class.

I bought the men's size small, which is a tad narrow in the hips because of the male-specific cut, but fits me well otherwise. If you're a lady-human with very narrow shoulders, I would fer sure go with the women's version.

It blocks the wind superbly well and keeps you cozy warm while dog-walking, adventure-taking, beer-drinking, or fall-snuggling.

    Love this vest

This vest does not disappoint. I usually wear with a flannel on underneath and it works great for cold nights out where you don't want to carry a jacket. I've also received several complements on it. Can't wait to test it out camping this spring.

      Great Vest!

Great vest to hop around town in, or just to wear on hikes. Like others have said, it works great as a base layer. I'll throw this on with a t-shirt a lot of days when it isn't too chilly, or will throw it on top of another layer if it's a little cold. Works great in all scenarios. Doesn't hurt that I love the way it looks as well....

      My favorite vest

I own the Black and Forge gray. Perfect for chilly nights on the town.I rarely wear this while active, as I would definitely get too warm, and its not in my vest quiver for that. Classic look and cut. Even my dog likes it.

      great vest

I love how this one looks! I got the El Cap khaki color. Very cool look. Very warm for chilly evenings around a camp fire. Im 6'1" 220 and the XL is perfect with a flannel under it

      Too Pimp

I will admit I love Pradagonia a little too much. But their stuff works well and looks good, so i cant be too ashamed. I own too many vests, and this might be my favorite. It has a good cut for athletic mountain folk, can dress it up or down, is warm on top of a flannel , and i think looks better as the fleece gets more worn. Ive worn it to both Oktoberfest and a few date nights, and works well for both casual uses.

      not yet fully utilized

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size

Just got this for a new england fall, and it has been 90+ degrees so i have not put it through the ringer yet, but can't wait to. Trying it on quickly the neck is high, but will appreciate when it is windy and cold. Otherwise I got a XS which seems to go true to size for me. So far would recommend. Will update if life changes.

      Great Classic Patagonia Vest

I've been using the Patagonia Retro-X Vest for as long as I can remember. This is a tried and true style from Patagonia - a great vest for chilly mornings and evenings, and also works well as an underlayer for the colder days out on the mountain.

        Sizing problems

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Had to send it back. Tried a medium in the store and it was too tight, so I ordered a large and it was too baggy. While I like their products, I've had this problem with Patagonia before... I guess I'm a medium and a half

I'm 6'4 about 165 pounds, tall and slender. Should I purchase a M or a L? I have the synchilla in a L and it fits my torso but is a little baggy.

        Hey Pat,

The bigger concern with selecting a vest is going to be how it fits around your torso so particularly the chest measurement is the most important dimension for this article of clothing. If your chest is under 42 inches around the I would bet the Medium would fit you best otherwise I would go with the Large.

Do all the retro-x vests had a red lining...

Do all the retro-x vests had a red lining on the inside? Some pictures (even of the same color vest) show different colored linings so I just wanted to check.

The Balsamic color looks good on the screen,...

The Balsamic color looks good on the screen, but am concerned it will be too pink or fuchsia. Anyone out there have this color? Is it more cordovan or more pink? Thanks!

        Best Answer

Ha, I just learned a new color; cordavan. Honestly, the Balsamic isn't going to be very pink, Patagonia understands that even though in today's society colors shouldn't be gender specific that most guys don't want to wear girly colors. There shouldn't be any effeminate hues in that light balsamic and against the gray tone its going to come across as a darker purple anyway.
