Classic style meets lightweight windproofing in Patagonia's Retro-X Jacket.

The Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket is made for working under the hood of your truck or spending the night in a bivy. Patagonia made this jacket with a plush Synchilla Fozzie-the-Bear outer, a polyester mesh liner, and a windproof breathable membrane sandwiched in the middle. The Classic Retro-X Jacket packs a surprising amount of warmth for its light weight. The sooner you get this jacket, the sooner you'll be able to mat down the ¼-inch Synchilla for its real Classic look.

    Extremely Disappointing Jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I'm a big fan of Patagonia outwear, and wear my Down Sweater and multiple Synchilla fleeces often. Those are fantastic and highly functional pieces, and I was expecting the same from the Retro-X jacket, but boy was I wrong!

When I received the jacket I was surprised by how much structure the jacket has for a fleece, or what some other reviewers are referring to as its stiffness. I'm guessing that the stiffness is due to the windproofing, and it makes the jacket feel more like a wool or leather jacket than a fleece. It feels comfortable, it just may be different than what you're expecting.

My problem with the jacket is that it does not breathe at all. Of course a fleece that is windproof won't breathe like a regular fleece, but wearing this jacket is like wearing a sauna suit. After walking a couple blocks in this jacket I'm sweating like crazy, and I've never experienced this before in anything besides really cheap junky nylon jackets. The only way to stop sweating is to open the zipper, but then I'm cold, especially my base layers are wet from the sweat.

So when wearing this jacket, my choice is either drenched in sweat, or freezing my you know what off. $200 down the drain.

Definitely contact Patagonia customer service so they can work to get you a replacement. Unfortunately it's tough to make a fleece windproof, and breathable at the same time. The Better Sweater or a classic Synchilla piece from Patagonia might be more to your liking.

    Great look and fit

Wore it in to work today and got a lot of compliments on it. It was just below 30 degrees and i was very comfortable outside. Great product, would recommend to anyone debating. is always a pleasure to deal with.

    Tough Jacket

    Hello All.

Have owned this jacket for about 9 months and have enjoyed every bit of it. The experiences with this jacket have been causal cold nights out on the town. Also cold weather commuting it has served has a excellent jacket for keeping out the wind and shedding light snow. I have used it a handful of times xc skiing and shoeing, but with the aerobic exercise its ventilation is poor. Agree with the "boxy" fit comments.

    Um, No thanks

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size

Received this and the R3 fleece jackets for Christmas. Love the R3! Super comfy. The Classic Retro X on the other hand--like wearing cardboard on the inside with a brillo pad outside. Just not for me so I returned it. Looks very nice but just not comfortable for me.

    Love It

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This jacket was perfect for what I was looking for. It's windproof and warm which is great on those cold windy nights. It's perfect for walking around town or on a weekend camping trip. A couple downsides i do want to point out; it doesn't have a draw chord so sometimes can be a bit drafty in the back. It also isn't for an extended backpacking trip because it doesn't pack small nor is it super light. Still is a quality retro piece from Patagonia.

Loved it, but oddly it "split" on arm.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I got this for my husband a few years ago, he LOVED receiving it. He wore it a handful of times. Oddly enough the fabric on the arm of the jacket split/ripped. We have no idea how it happened, so it's been hanging in the closet since.

    Sizes didn't work for me

I tried a large and it was too big in the waist and then a medium and it was too tight in the chest. It's a very nice jacket but didn't work for my tall skinny frame (6'2", 180 lbs) so I returned it and am searching for another style jacket.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a very warm fleece! The fleece isn't lined all the way through the interior but it is still very warm. I love the look of the jacket and get complemented all the time. The chest pocket was great to keep my phone in while I could keep my hands warm in the other pockets.

      nice, but runs big

i got this for my bf-- should've known to size down w/ patagonia. he is 6' and about 170lbs. the L was too big, should've gone M. we ended up returning it, although it's a nice jacket-- fuzzy!

        NOT soft and fuzzy

          Yes, it's really windproof.

Yes, it's made of recycled materials.

But no, it's not soft. The Patagonia R3 fleece and the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man look similar to the Retro-X but unlike the Retro-X, they are SOFT AND FUZZY. However, this jacket isn't. The jacket feels like the yellow insulation materials they put in buildings/houses. It's not soft. I'm in college and a couple of girls literally ran up to me to feel my jacket, but leave disappointed in it's roughness. Times like that I wished I chose the R3 or the Monkey Man.

But considering that the Retro-X is windproof unlike its counterparts, it's nice. But keep in mind that the jacket feels a bit stiff even after wearing it for a couple of months and I don't think it'll get any less stiff because of its construction with the inner windproof layer design.

But the jacket is very warm and cuddly looking, but beware it's not soft and fuzzy like how I was hoping.

One of the Finest Made Product Ever

I bought one of these jackets around 1993. It was my main jacket for winter for many years. I left it at a new years party and my friend refused to return it conveniently because he love it so much.

This jacket is one of the greatest jackets ever designed. It has a thicker fleece exterior but it keeps you incredibly warm due to the wind-proof membrane. Pockets are large.

Patagonia makes quality products that are durable and this is one of the best.

I'm glad to have my new one for this winter.

            warm, wind resistant

The wind blocking layer really works and the jacket is quite warm. i would call it more of a casual/around town/maybe a day hike fleece. It's not the most packable, i wouldn't take it in the backcountry with me. i could see wearing it as a thick midlayer under a shell on the ski hill tho. All in all, i bought it for casual wear so i am happy with it. The vest is a good option too.

              Bought over a year ago

First off, I'm 6'4 190-200lbs (depending if its the holidays) and i fit very well in size large. I bought the black retro x with the grey pocket.

Used this from camping and hiking to everyday use in the wind, rain sleet and snow up here in the pacific northwest. Never has let me down. People have commented on it on several occasions and have even gotten a few random people asking if they can feel the fabric.

Over the past year and a half of owning the jacket the only wear and tear is under the elbows where the fleece has gotten a little matted while driving or resting my arms. Does not affect the integrity whatsoever. And can be remedied by rubbing your hands over it for a few seconds to kind of rough it back up.

I see myself using this for a long time.

                Looks Great!

He loved it. Gift for the BF...and i was uncertain about size as Patagonia usually runs a bit small. He normally wears an XL so i was in a quandry..but the XL fit fine. Plenty big (he can wear a heavy shirt or two layers under it).As stated in previous posts, it is looser at the bottom, but in my case that was what i wanted...many of the snap tees i have ended up with because they are too tight on him (too big on me).I would say this Patagonia item was pretty true to size. Thanks to those who helped me on the chats on this one trying to figure out size. its a KEEPER!!!!

                  Great Bargain!

It FIT!!! I held off on doing the review until after gifting it because i really thought it may have been too large. Patagonia has a tendency to run a wee bit on the small side, but after "chatting" with some of the customer service reps who checked and re-checked i was pretty comfortable with ordering the XL. Recipient is 5' 8", longish torso(short legs) and broad chested...this fit fine...a wee bit large, but i know a Large would have been too tight in the chest. It is loose around the bottom which I liked but some readers complained about (cold air etc) but if it had been tight i think it would have hung a bit funny. This was a great bargain...and "recipient" is quite happy with it..and he is a hard one to buy for..but he is a sucker for patagonia and fleece.

                    Unanswered Question

I need a 30-50 degree wind proof jacket, will this work (planning on using it for short bike rides btw)? or is it too warm? (planning on using it for short bike rides btw) any better patagonia options?

                    Unanswered Question

How does this compare to the R4 Jacket in warmth and weight? I have an older R4 that's incredibly warm, but swallows me like a trash bag.

I have a 44 inch chest and a 49 inch waist. what size Classic Retro X is recommended? How do they fit? Does this Jacket run Large or true to size? I have never ordered a Patagonia item before. Thanks

                    Hey Jennifer,

this jacket does fit true to size. Patagonia generally has a somewhat "boxy" fit compared to other brands. If you have a chest of 44" I would recommend an XL. the L might be a little tight across the chest if you have a thicker layer/shirt on under the jacket.

I am 5 foot 9, 150 lbs, and a 32 waist. I can't decide between a small and medium. I understand a medium would be better for layering, but would a small still be big enough to fit a sweatshirt under? How does it compare sizing wise to the north face Denali or the Patagonia better sweater?

My blood runs pretty warm and I tend to get pretty hot inside most jackets with a waterproof-type membrane - but this one is just windproof. I can't ever get a feel for how well something like this breathes. How stuffy is this jacket?

                    Hi -
I'm 5'7 165 lbs... 32 waist with a shorter torso and athletic build. I am always between a small and a medium in shirts and jackets. I have read this jacket is a tad big and I'm looking for a replacement for my frazzled monkey man (medium - but they ran a bit small)... i'm looking for something I can throw on over a t-shirt and use as a layer under my shell for skiing and other winter activities. I'll rarely have more than a t-shirt or other base under the retro. That said - would a small be too small - or would it fit perfect? I'd imagine a medium would give more freedom - but I also think the retro might stretch just a hair over time. Thanks for any advice....

Thanks for the question. I'd say you should give the small a shot and rest assured that Backcountry's return policy will help you out if it doesn't fit. I think since you only want to wear a T underneath, or use the fleece as a mid layer that the size small might possibly give you the perfect fit. Hope that helps, good luck

Is it just me or does this jacket have a wider waist than the older versions?

I can't speak to the older version but this new one does have a really wide waist... and no drawstring. Patagonia was probably trying to appeal to a greater percentage of the American market... or should I say "wider". Ugg... fat Americans... I just puked a little in my mouth.

Okay I'm a bit of a strange build but I'd really like this jacket for the colder seasons..... Currently I stand about 5'6" and I'm about 170 lbs and I'm really not fat promise But I have EXTREMELY broad shoulders and muscular arms....normally a medium T-shirt is tight on my shoulders but fits well on the rest of my body...however a large is perfect for my shoulders but looks like a dress on me...I'd like to get the size right on this so I don't have to play the ship/size game....anyone have any ideas about what size could work?? I don't mind if the fit is a BIT loose or tight I'm used to that. Any advice?

Hey Jared, I'm thinking you'll be pretty happy with a medium. If you're shoulder are super broad it might be a tad tight, but I can't imagine it being that bad. Large would be good in the shoulders for sure, but possibly to long in the sleeves and waist. Hope that helps! Good luck.
