Description

Chupacabra means 'goat-sucker'. It just doesn't make much sense for a backpack.

No, no, no - you're thinking of 'Chupacabra'. Chacabuco is an abandoned mining town in Northern Chile. It's also a spacious, 32-liter backpack from Patagonia. The Chacabuco features a roomy main compartment with plenty of space for the things you'll need for 15 miles of hiking. The Airflow mesh shoulder straps and back panel keep you cool and dry, reducing fatigue so you can go faster and farther than you though possible.
  • Padded, raised compartment protects your 17 inch laptop
  • Hydration-ready for hiking and cycling
  • Exterior zip pocket for your wallet and phone
  • Micro-fleece lined pocket protects your shades or MP3 player

HI! I am a girl with a small torso, about 15 or 16 inches...would this pack be good for me? I am looking for a nice pack for everything, that will keep me happy for as long as it lasts!

It might be slightly long for you considering the length of the bag is about 21". The actual fit of the torso for this pack is probably around 17"-18". However my sister who has the same torso size as you used this bag for a light hike and had no issues. It all depends what you are using it for and what your comfort level is. I have 2 of these bags and the quality/features are great.

For college, this is a great bag for classes. The laptop sleeve works well and the interior pockets are clever. For a school bag, it does have some unnecessary features: hip strap (gets in the way). Overall, as a college/work bag, it works great.
But for a day pack, it's not quite performance oriented. The hip belt is thin and not padded. The stationery sleeves on the front of the bag are uneedded for a day pack.

Also, it's quite expensive. Despite my comments, I would buy it again and I recommend this bag.

The 420D Nylon will be slightly water resistant but not waterproof.

Yup, the Chacabuco is definitely water resistant. The nylon has a DWR coating on it, and it would take some pretty good rain to get through to the interior

i am curious about what size torso this fits? i have a small torso and usually need to buy packs that are specifically in a small torso size.

The torso height will be similar to the listed height. The dimensions of this pack are 21 x 11.5 x 14in (53 x 29 x 36cm)

Lauren,
Check out the Cascada from Patagonia, it's basically a women's version of the Chacabuco with a shorter torso and contoured straps.

Love this pack, not to big, sized just right. Holds my 17" laptop, or swap it out for a hydration bladder, with room to spare. Large water bottle pockets on the sides hold my 32oz bottles with ease. Mega-pockets all over the inside,in various sizes, one on the exterior is fleece lined for your glasses or phone, which I really dig. Lashing straps on the back are also key, for clamping down whatever extra you may have. I'm pretty picky when it comes to packs, but this one is a winner.

I used this as my only piece of luggage to go to Costa Rica...it fit the 'few' clothes I needed, shoes, and my laptop! And had plenty of nice little secret pockets for other goods like phone and money. Great pack for the money and very comfortable!

Great backpack. It's light and has lots of room with plenty of compartments.

Love the quality of the pack (decent water resistance, seems like it will hold up over time). I love the i-pod pocket and laptop/camelbak slot, and the organizers in the front are great. I can fit a reasonable amount of stuff, but it's by no means a huge back pack. Overall I'm pretty pleased with it.

Can someone summarise the differences between this and the Fuego? They seem very similar.

The only differences are the ones you can see right away. A different compartment and pocket configuration and this one also has an ice axe loop, handy if you're doing an early season peak.

Also, the Fuego is an inch wider with slightly less depth, so even though it is the same volume as the Chacabuco, it is slightly "lower profile".

Great backpack with pockets in all the right places. The shoulder straps are super comfortable and allow for the pack to be cinched down tight if necessary. Primarily purchased for a school backpack and love the internal padded laptop compartment and it fits my 15 in MacBook Pro perfectly. It goes without saying that it is well made.

Amazing capacity with fine organized storeplaces. You never will lose your wallet or USB flash in such big backpack.

If you're looking for a great all around pack to hold your laptop and a ton of gear, clothes, or work paraphernalia the Chacabuco is your pack. This is my everyday bag for hauling my laptop, work paraphenalia, or whatever. The laptop sleeve is top notch - easily accessible and well padded. The water bottle pockets on each side hold large bottles in place no problem. And my favorite little feature is the two small pockets at the top of the pack. One is lined for sunglasses/phone/ipod, and the other is really nice to have for keys etc... Also a nice elastic cord on the exterior for lashing on a jacket, and organizer pockets in the small exterior pocket. Patagonia went all out for the largest and most fully featured pack in their daypack line and didn't leave much to be desired.
