When the temps drop below freezing, start your layering system with the Patagonia Women's Capilene 4 Long-Sleeve Zip-Neck. Patagonia made this long underwear top to give you an excellent start on layering for extremely cold winter conditions. The Capilene 4 Top's jersey face and flat seams reduce friction between layers for more comfort in the mountains.
Bottom Line: Shrug off the subzero temps in the Patagonia Capilene 4 Zip-Neck.
Good feel. Snaggy. Keeps you warm, and dries quickly when wet. Used it both for sleeping in below 0C temperatures (in appropriate sleeping bag) as well as during the day while trekking.
I love the entire Capilene range. This Cap 4 zip neck is warm without bulk, breathable so that it works across a wide range of temps and conditions, figure flattering and washes well -- no smell after multiple days wearing it, looks and fits like new after cold wash/line dry (dry so fast too). At 5.6 with a short torso, this is still a flattering length in boy and sleeves. It is more fitted than Cap 1 and 2.
Write your question here... How does the Capilene 4 compare to wool 4? I'm looking for the best warmth to weight ratio. Any one have a thought on this?
Just to add my two cents, I prefer the Wool 3 for a lightweight, but warm layer. Whenever I wear it i'm amazed by how warm it is, yet how thin and light it is. I even wore it a couple cool mornings backpacking this summer and was amazed that I didn't overheat as quickly as I expected, so it breathes well when needed.
Capilene 4 has the higher warmth to weight ratio, although Wool 4 is warmer overall, it's like a nice sweater you can run around in. Not too take anything away from Cap 4 though. Very warm, very light and super compressible.

I have owned my Cap 4's for over a year. The arms fit well, the sleeves stay down and the shirt stays down throughout activities. This is not old school capri which would end up a mess of lint after washing. This washes beautifully and does not end up out of shape for having been washed. I am a size 8 and the size M has a great fit. This will keep you warm and stop the shivers completely. You will be happy you purchased some as well as they will soon be your favorite. I hope this helps you make your decision.
I have a Capilene 4 short from 6 years ago that far exceeds the weight and warmth of the newer styled Capilene. The fit is now much narrower--I generally wear an XS, but go up in size for Patagonia's underwear. I ordered a M, and it was still on the snug side--I like to wear a light-weight silk underwear as a first layer, and the Capilene as a second. I think the improvements made in recyclable materials have compromised warmth and fit.
I love this shirt! I wear it with the Capilene 4 bottoms under my jacket and pants while boarding and stay 100% warm. I sized up on the top (L) because I like to wear the shirt by itself around town without a scandalously tight look. For underwear insullation purposes only, the M shirt is great for me (5'6"/135).
I love this shirt, it is the BEST EVER. Honestly, I've never made a better purchase. Perfect for skiing, running, or casual wear. Works great under just a vest for warmer days skiing/running. LOVE LOVE LOVE this shirt.
This is a great jacket for a taller person; it is long in the neck, torso, and arms; with plenty of hip room; the colors are great; however, since it is not a petite jacket and I am petite; I had to return it.
I love this Capilene material! I ride trails with a Morgan and all the outside work that goes with horse ownership. I was always fighting a virus before this top, because I'd sweat and then get hit by a cold wind in the saddle as the air chilled or the sun went down. Now I just layer with a smart wool or ibex wool base layer first and then my Capilene 3 or Capilene 4 depending on the degree of cold, and a vest--and although I still sweat, I'm never feel the cold and the wetness wicks right off until I'm dry again and comfortable. Best of all, I don't miss a riding day because I'm sick. Thanks!
I have this in both the Capilene 3 and 4. This one is perfect layering for skiing when it's pretty chilly out and the zip is great for regulating your temp if you're skiing hard.
Love it! This is the perfect weight of capilene to wear under my ski jacket and to wear around everyday. I live in patagonia's capilene and this is another to add to my collection.
