When light layers just won't get the job done, pull on the Patagonia Men's Capilene 4 Long-Sleeve Zip-Neck top and take advantage of heavyweight warmth with serious technical performance. This top wicks like crazy, so you don't get drenches with sweat when the going gets tough. On top of everything, Patagonia made this top from 50% recycled fabrics to protect the environments we all love so much.

Bottom Line: What warmth feels like.

SUPER RAD! but get the hooded one!

By:
February 3, 2010

there's quite a bit of difference in price...but i'd suggest going with the R1 flash hoody. it's so worth it! this is a great one too and if you'd rather have no hood, than this is the way to go.

AWWWWESOME!!

By:
January 28, 2010

the red in the cap 4 is possibly the best color i've ever seen on any pullover. it's super warm and fits perfectly with a lil chest pocket that holds my iphone perfectly. i picked up 2 at patagonia's annual sale and gave one to my brother and he's loved me for it ever since! i never go anywhere without it or the r1 hoody fleece by patagonia. patagonia dominates the market in pullovers, i've worn em all and have a gillion including arc'teryx and marmot and all those other second best brands but i ALWAYS reach for the patagonia because not only do their products perform better but they also look MUCH better than the competition

I tend to sweat a fair amount when hiking hard in freezing temps..

I tend to sweat a fair amount when hiking hard in freezing temps.. wearing a Cap 1, 2, or 3 gets drenched and they take forever to dry.. Is the material on the cap 4 faster drying?

cap 1 or 2 tend to be the quickest drying usually since they're the lightest of the capilene fabrics. Cap 4 might do well for you though, it's got an open grid texture on the interior of the fabric that moves moisture really well. If you need to layer I would actually put a Cap 4 or R1 over the Cap 1, 2, or 3, it would help move the moisture even better and hopefully keep you drier.

Love them

By:
August 13, 2009

These things are the best for hiking. They breathe like no other, yet still keep you warm. If you put a hand warmer in the chest pocket over your heart you wont even notice the cold if you stay active. Wont hike without them.

Essential

By:
January 4, 2009

I never leave home for skiing, winter hiking, etc without this layer. It's soft, it wicks moisture, and it looks good even for casual wear. Like others have said, it keeps the stink down, which is always a plus.

Integral gear

As base layer, or next to lighter weight/silkweight capilene, this Cap 4 top offers versatility and feedom of movement and is extremely warm when used alone or in cinjunction with a fleece. I wear it alone with the R4 fleece and am very comfortable even at altitude or on a cold windy New Mexico winter day. I recommend it highly.

great product

By:
December 25, 2009

I wear Captilene 2,3 and 4 beneath my North Face ski coat. Between mixing and matching the baselayer with the zip in liners (from a fleece vest to a down vest) on my coat, I can pretty much be warm and comfy no matter what Vermont Winters can through at me. If you use these layered systems correctly and take care of them, you will never need to wear anything new for years of winters, and as others have pointed out, great for layering all year- wear mine camping in the summer!

outstanding!

By:
January 5, 2010

I've had this shirt for about a year and a half now, and it's still one of my favorite pieces of gear. I've worn it for four days straight hiking in the smokies in winter, and it never felt cold and never started to stink. I love the look, and wear it on cool days around my hometown whenever I get a chance. Most recently, I hiked up 2000' in 2 miles wearing this over my wool Icebreaker Tech-T and under my Marmot Troll Wall jacket (gore-tex pro 3L), and it wicked away my sweat like a champ—I didn't even feel cold standing still at the top of the hike, despite the 15°F weather.

Super light, super warm, wicks like crazy, doesn't stink, and looks great in the process. I mean really, what more could you want?

my husband's favorite shirt

By:

My husband loves this shirt--he loves the fit and color as well as the warmth without bulk. However, I should point out that he has not tested it in extreme conditions as of yet.

None Better

By:
December 18, 2009

These absolutely rock. I had one that I wore just about every cold day for 10 years and never could wear the thing out. Ended up giving it to a homeless person, and expect to get a fresh one for Christmas (right, Honey?) :-)

Sure they cost more than other fleeces, but given the durability and quality, there is nothing else even close. Not all fleece is created equal!

Great Shirt - Accurate Fit

By:
May 5, 2008

The description of this item on this site is 100% accurate (believe it or not, it really does keep the body odor to a minimum). I wore back country several times in a variety of conditions and it performed superbly. Highly recommend.

Amazing shirt

By:
November 21, 2008

I just received my Capilene 4 and I'm very happy with it. It is extremely warm for how thin it is, and a great base layer for any outdoor activity. I live in Wisconsin so it can get extremely cold, and with this shirt I will be warm all winter! I can't take this thing off.

Does exactly what it should

By:
July 17, 2009

Fantastic top, regardless of the activity! Keeps me just warm enough when it's cool out, and manages warm temps better than any other base layer I've had. (Which is to say it beats 5 or 6 other big names.) Perfect for layering under my softshell. Fit is a touch on the snug side, as it should be for a wicking base layer. At 6'1", 185 lbs, a medium is just the right length in the arms and the torso, neck fits good, and it has a nice long zip for when I want some extra ventilation. Chest pocket is nice too. Really, the only place I don't like the fit is around my belly, which could use a bit of work anyway :) Does seem a bit likely to snag, but I haven't had that problem yet. All things considered, I'm not sure I'll ever buy anything else.

performance

By:
October 1, 2007

The Patagonia Capilene Zip Long-Sleeve has a great weight to warmth performance. It makes a great first layer for high country backpacking or cold weather activity. My only concern at this point (used for one 8 day trip) goes to durability. My impression is that this fabric requires care to avoid snags as it seems rather easily damaged.

Not as warm as I thought

By:
January 23, 2007

Fit: 6-4; 235; 46-47" Chest; 37/38" sleeve. Fit well in the body, not too tight. Sleeves were too short - could've used another 3 inches or so.

Performance: Not as absolutely warm during periods of inactivity as I was hoping for. My first experience with Capilene. Seems better suited to active pursuits. I wore it alone as a top for a run on a 30 degree morning and was fine - warm and dry. I wore it beneath a heavy work coat and The North Face Magic softshell on a few 15 degree nights where it was stop and go at work and froze when I wasn't laboring.

The Right Choice

By:
January 30, 2009

Recently climbed Aconcagua and bought this as a versatile inner layer to help handle the varied weather. We had very good weather overall and the zipper neck on this shirt handled everytning from snow, sleet, wind and rain to the gorgeous sun filled sky that we had on summit day. It also performed well after 16 days on the mountain in minimizing retained body odor.

Great Base Layer

By:
December 11, 2006

I dont think you can ever go wrong with Capilene. This layer 4 heavyweight long underwear is warmer then most for those really cold days. Fits pretty true to size. I am 6'1" 170 and wear a medium.

Not so warm

By:
January 10, 2010

Love it but clearly only warm enough with other under or over layers and/or as advertised for 'high output stop and go activity'. I would like to see Patagonia put a heavier version of this out for casual outdoor activity or just wearing around town on a cold day. Also, I like the idea of the little chest pocket (sunglasses or cell phone or air tickets, passport, whatever) but if we're going to have a pocket like that, which I personally like, make it a little bigger so it's actually useful for something other than iPod, which I would never use it for - don't go to the mountains to listen to anything but nature!

great fit

I really like this baselayer. It is well fitted, and breathes well. I recently used it on an uphill hike and it kept me warm without getting overheated. I think it will work great as a baselayer for skiing.

great midweight baselayer

By:
April 6, 2007

Patagucci does not fail in quality once again. This midweight baselayer is not only tough enough to withstand abuse, but will keep you dry and warm on a windy, cold day or on a sweaty, hot backcountry day.
