Not bad as a base layer, but material is a bit see through, and doesn't have enough stretch to be completely comfortable. They' are warm enough for an average ski day/hiking under a good shell, but for sub-zero temps (F) I'd add a few extra layers. Also, I like my base layers to be stretch enough so that i forget I'm wearing them - these don't quite cut it.

I thought I was going over the top when I ordered these as a snowboarding baselayer (I'm originally from Florida and get cold easily!), but they are actually perfect! The material is very easy to move in and stays dry, but has kept me very warm riding in everything from 30 degrees F to -15 degrees (bbbrrrrrrrr). The waistband is very comfortable too! I'm 5'5" and 130 lbs, the medium works for me but they are a little loose after the day is done.

I love them! I look for many reasons to wear them in the month I've had them. Should get another pair because it seems I find Patagonia items I wear to death and can never find the same thing again.

Am a novice to warm baselayers and selected these after extensive hunting. They are superbly comfortable (no digging waistband) and breathe well. I'd argue they're a bit see-through to sip a hot toddie in public. I wore these with a lightweight yoga pant over top and a pure shell pant layer and was toasty in 20 deg F skiing and under jeans in 5 deg F walking the river for hours. Perfect. Next test will be the Andes. More reporting back after that.

Patagonia redesigned the new Capilene 4 fabric to be a true next to skin, super warm baselayer. It's not designed to be as warm as previous versions, which were more of a mid-weight fleece weight. That fabric is now available as the Patagonia Piton Pullover and Piton Bottom.

I'm totally digging the new fabric. It's super warm and incredibly comfortable. Almost wears like merino, and due to the new silver based anti-odor treatment it fights off the stink almost as well as merino too. This fabric is breathable when on it's own, and captures a lot of warmth when wearing layers on top of it. For me it's the perfect backcountry skiing piece, and the shirt that I pull on almost every morning right out of bed. The interior is a micro grid similar to what you'd find in an R1 fleece, but a lighter and more breathable version. The warmth it captures is pretty awesome for how light the fabric is, sometimes it's almost too warm for me, and I have to size up to a large since a slim fitting medium is too warm. It's a really unique new fabric, and definitely needs to be worn and tested to be appreciated.
(the redesigned waist is pretty sweet too - more of a yoga pant/wide band that stays up well and is super comfortable

These fit under my pants no matter how tight they fit. They keep me warm no matter what the weather. Can't even tell they are on. I hand wash and hang them to dry and they keep there shape and dry very fast. Love It!
