When you won't be trapped inside by the winter chill, pull on the Patagonia Women's Capilene 4 Bottoms and head out into the fluffy whiteness. These light and compressible bottoms feature an internal grid which traps body heat, wicks moisture and breathes whether you're on a ten-mile ski tour or sitting by a fire sipping an Irish coffee. The Gladiodor fabric treatment fights odors, and these bottoms are fully recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Bottom Line: Warm undies to block the wintry chill.

Super Warm!

By:
August 6, 2010

With my Cap 4 I have to be careful not to get TOO warm! I wore this on an alpine start in 10°F weather with 15-20 mph winds under just a light Schoeller soft shell pant and I was super toasty! It's got a nice fit and is soft on the inside against your skin. I machine wash mine and then lay it out to dry - I find they last longer and smell better this way (the dryer will seal in some gnarly odors).

Maybe I wore mine too much...

I really like these long undies (they are super warm, comfortable, and they dry so quickly so if you want to do some laundry you don't have to worry about your undies drying). My only problem with them is that the waistband had essentially completely ripped off of mine (I have even tried to sew it back on) and there is a hole that looks like a stocking snag on the butt seam. I do use them quite a bit but I take good care of them- I am blaming my washing machine, but I would recommend finding a pair that does not have a waistband like these.

I've been wearing SmartWool as my primary baselayer for both

I've been wearing SmartWool as my primary baselayer for both upper and lower body. Recently, I've noticed small holes appearing in all of my SmartWool garments, which I recently saw someone on the boards attribute to machine drying the garments. I like my performance clothes, especially the baselayers, to be easy care for the most part, meaning I can wash and dry them without worry. I know that the Capilene is not wool, however I want to be sure not to have to worry about lots of runs through the washer and dryer damaging the clothes. Has anyone ever had any problem with this?

One of Capilene's attributes over wool is definitely it's great durability. Definitely machine dryable and will last forever like mentioned below. However don't discount Capilene as that much cooler than wool. There are definitely some wool pieces that are warmer than Capilene, but this Capilene 4 bottom is very very warm!

I've been wearing Capilene for 5 or 6 years now and still have some of my original shirts, back when they were silk, light, med, and expedition weights. I haven't had any issues with them wearing out or getting holes. The Cap 4 will start to pile up a bit after a while, but it is much more durable than wool.

Keep in mind that the Capilene won't be as warm as a wool layer, so they aren't substitutes for each other.

Warm britches

By:
November 20, 2009

It's only the end of November, so it hasn't gotten too cold yet. However, I've already worn these and love them! I might need another layer for the German winter ahead, but so far, I really like these.

I wore these all last winter and they kept me warm. They are thin enough to wear under jeans comfortably, and I was still able to tuck my jeans-long underwear and all-into boots. Last night I was very cold when I was trying to sleep and I put these on, and immidiately warmed up wnough to be comfy.

I want something that I can wear as a base layer under pants

I want something that I can wear as a base layer under pants for when I ride my horse this winter. Something that I can move in.

These would work, but it better be really cold. Cap4 is really warm. I'd also suggest that your top layer be something that really stops the wind.

ankle seams not elastic enough

By:
March 29, 2010

Great product, but too tight at the ankle (especially if you don't want to tuck them in in your ski-boots, and try to pull them higher). The ankle seams are not elastic enough. For this reason, I have returned this item.

Warm and Comfy

Wore them for the first time today. In the 20's I'd say...and kept me warm (with a wind pant over.) Very comfortable, too! Love the softness.

I work outside and wear under amour as my base layer. I want

I work outside and wear under amour as my base layer. I want some long underwear that is loose enough to wear over the under amour, which ones fit the bill?

I think these would work well for you, or even the R1 pants might be a better option. The R1 is right in between a pant and a tight so it can be layered, or worn on it's own.

PERFECT!!

By:

I love these bottoms. I wear them as pants with boots, I wear them to hike in, I wear them as longn underwear. They are snug fit but with a soft elastic on the waist which doesn't cut and bind. I have them in 3 sizes depending on the fit I want. I keep warm no matter how cold it is! I don't sweat under them ever, they breath so nicely. They are scientifically designed and it shows!!!

I LOVE these!! I wear them as pants. They are thick enough to keep me warm but don't look bulky nor too tight. They complement my shape and the waist is nice and loose. I ordered them in 2 sizes so I could have a more relaxed pair and a pair that would look great around town.
