Every classy lady has a little black dress in her closet, and every class-act outdoor chick has a Patagonia Women's Capilene 3 Midweight Zip-Neck Top in her mountain wardrobe. This versatile number is made with Polartec Power Dry fabric, so it is moisture-wicking and quick-drying, and the zip-neck makes for easy climate control. To ensure that you won't be odoriferous (never a good idea in a little black dress either), the Polygeine odor treatment keeps smelliness at bay. Like the little black dress made with cutting a rug in mind, the stretchy Cap 3 is loaded with functionality. The slim fit slips beneath other layers, the straight hem is cut long enough so you can tuck it in, the offset shoulder seams merge out of the way of pack straps, and the thumb loops give you secure hand coverage. Wear this midweight to the mountain and prepare for a few jealous looks.

perfect for cool weather activities

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This was my most worn item on a recent trip through Flagstaff, Zion, and Salt Lake City. I layered it with casual vests / jackets in Flagstaff where it dumped 8" of snow and temps hit below freezing; I wore it on it's own when hiking 12+ miles in Zion and daytime temps ranged from mid 30's - 40's; also wore it asa top layered with a tank when mountain biking in Salt Lake. It was super comfy, the quarter zip is flattering and versatile, and after about a week of intense wear, it passed the sniff test easily!

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I've only heard amazing things about how Patagonia Capilene's are the go-to base layer. It was not very comfortable. It was scratchy against the skin and the thumb loops seemed cheap and didn't quite fit right.

You would look at this piece and think how in the world is this going to keep me warm? Little do you know, this thing is powerfully warm. The capilene technology that Patagonia has created is pristine material. It's thin, yet it keeps me so warm and at a great tempeture when I am skiing on those colder days. I would say that it is slightly shorter than what I would want, but not much to complain about. Great piece!

    Nice Color

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

I bought this Medium in Desert Turquoise and my favorite part is unfortunately, just the color. Being 5'10" & 135lbs, it is too short for my torso/arms and the thumb holes make the sleeves awkwardly stretch when I use them. The material is great, not too heavy but definitely keeps me at a good temperature. If the fit were better for me, I would love this but because of that it's only so-so in my book.

    Perfect Base Layer

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I use this almost everyday to go skiing at the resort. I love the zip neck. It is thin enough to wear as a base layer, with multiple layers over it. And great by itself as well.

    great base layer

I have an older version of this top (circa 2008), and this one is definitely different- thinner, softer material, which is nice- my older version was thicker, with a coarse outer material. Still has the slim fit, but not as long as my old one, unfortunately. The thumb loops are a great addition. Sleeves are a little short, but this has always been the case with all Patagonia items- they make great quality clothing, but think all women are 5'2" or less it seems! I am 5'7", normally a size 2 in tops, and wear size Small in this top.
