    Capilene, o capilene.

While your little cherub might not be old enough to have a sense of brand loyalty, you can in the very least attempt to cultivate it with a little help from the Patagonia Infant Boys' Capilene Midweight Set. This two-piece set includes a long-sleeve bodysuit and pants made from the same performance Polartec Power Dry fabric as your own baselayers, which ultimately traps warmth and wicks moisture away—so he stays comfortable, longer. Not to mention, it's quick-drying so he's not sitting in soggy layers after spills or leaks. Plus, it has a Polygiene odor-resistant treatment, the benefits of which are obvious to any parent.

    • An insulating baselayer set for an infant
    • Polartec Power Dry provides warmth and wicks away moisture
    • Two-piece set offers adaptability
    • Sleeves have fold-over mitts for added warmth
    • Bottom features seat gusset for big-booty-diapers
    • Item #PAT01GB

    Lil dude loves them

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

My 1 year old looks awesome in these. Love the material. It's almost got a silky feel to them. I bought the 18 month size for him so they are a bit large on him now but I like that. Plenty of room to grow in and they seem super durable but we'll just have to wait and see.

The top and bottom are different. The bottoms have flat seams that are soft. The top has rough seams that stick out.

      Great Baselayer for Baby

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Patagonia Baby Capilene is by far our favorite baselayer for the under two crowd. The onesie and pants are made of the same capilene as the adult baselayers, and performs well. It's warmer than a standard cotton shirt, but more importantly wicks moisture away from baby.

The onesie is key for long hikes with baby in a front pack, where your sweat can cause little ones to get wet and cold without proper clothing.

I also love that baby capilene can be hand washed and dried overnight, so we only need 1-2 sets in each size. We layer both pieces with vests, jackets, and puff pants as weather requires.

The fit is true to a wee bit generous. My boys are tall and outgrew other brands (Carter's, Old Navy, Gap) about two months before the advertised age. They can truly wear the Patagonia outfits as described (B is 9 months old and currently in 6-12 month size). If I could make one suggestion to Patagonia it would be for a second set of snaps on the onesie for a more "grow with you" style.

Patagonia baby gear is pricey but has been worth it every time for our family - we love having the option to get our boys outside in any weather!

      Perfect Baby Base Layer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 0-3month

In preparation for the recent Engearment mission to Iceland, we picked up a few extra bits to make sure our littlest gearhead, Danjo, stayed warm and dry no matter what sort of shenanigans we got up to. The foundation of a great layering scheme is a great base layer. And, wouldn't you know of the all-time greats is available in mini sizes. So, we had a set of the Patagonia Baby Capilene Midweight base layers delivered just in time.

The set comes with two pieces - a long-sleeve onesie and a pair of pants - and are available in six sizes for everybaby from birth to 24 months. There's no difference between boys' and girls' sets other than the colors. The 0-3 month size is still working for the little dude since early December at about 14 pounds, though it's starting to get small. Patagonia rates it up to 10 lbs, but with baby sizes, everything is a total crapshoot.

We found baby Capilene to be a great foundation for a baby layering system and used the same set almost every day. After washing, it dried quickly enough - despite a janky Icelandic dryer - that we could wash it at night and put it back on Danjo in the morning. It also really liked to absorb liquids, so spit-up and drool made for frequent washings. No damage from washing, so far.

There are a few features we've really appreciated. Patagonia uses snaps that feel exceptionally solid. When you snap the onesie together, it's not coming apart until you unsnap it. Also, hand covers! The sleeves have magical hand covers that fold over and keep the little ones from scratching themselves or getting cold hands. Though we haven't tried it ourselves, Capilene must be pretty tasty because the little dude loved shoving his hands in his mouth the second we covered them. Keep an eye out for our upcoming base-layer taste test.

Does your kid need Patagonia Capilene? No. But, if you plan on having the little one outside in some chilly conditions, it's a great (and adorable) way to keep them warm and dry. Add in a set of Patagonia Baby Synchilla Booties and your nugget will be cozy and well on his or her way to being a little gearhead.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

Soft, warm and the color is as seen above. I ordered the Pico Stripe/Peppergrass Green/Feather Grey for this little guy and with his red highlights in those locks it looks great. He is just one and the 12 month is a perfect fit.
