The Patagonia Women's Capilene 3 Midweight Crew Top is a versatile baselayer for skiing and snowboarding and can also be worn by itself for a quick jog. The polyester fabric wicks moisture fast and dries quickly for sweaty runs or hot days climbing on the mountain. Its jersey face is soft to the touch and makes it easy to layer under mid-layers and jackets.

It's strange

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The fit is weird, the torso is boxy and short and wide and the sleeves at short and thin. The fabric takes getting used to, it's not soft and it feels very synthetic but I've actually grown to like it. But even though I like it, it's not attractive or flattering on me. I was disappointed because I've heard such great things about the brand but this item was not worth the money in my opinion. It is very warm with being stifling, and the odor block is fantastic if you don't leave it wadded up in a damp corner. So I am impressed by it but it's hard to get over the fit. It just doesn't feel good to wear it because of the weird shape, so no matter how great the materials I just don't think it's worth it.

Passed the Marathon Test

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Wore this for half of the Antarctic Ice Marathon and it was warm and comfortable for the run. I like the loop in the sleeves to help keep them down when you're putting other layers on top of the shirt. I thought the sizing was fine. 13.1 miles of running apparently maxes out the odor control capability though, because when I had to wear this shirt again a few days later (we got snowed in and I ran out of clothes) it definitely reeked.

Interesting fit

I really like the Cap 3 fabric and have been trying to like the tops for years now, but I have one major problem with it - Patagonia has a very distinct fit for women. By this I mean that it is very forgiving in the hip area. For those of us that are more ruler-shaped (waist and hips are same size), these kinds of tops just hang really awkwardly. I will admit that I own two of these tops, but I never feel like they look good on me or are flattering.

As a disclaimer, I have not tried on this season's tops, so if the fit has changed, please correct me.
