Here's what others have to say...

Great base layer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Though I've never gotten to use them for skiing as I had intended when I bought them, I've used them on many hikes and dog walks in single digit temps. I love how warm and thin the material is. I can wear them comfortably under a pair of jeans. My only complaint is that the fit is sort of weird, tight thru the lower legs and growing to bagginess at the waist and butt.

good baselayer for winter activity.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

use these for resort skiing in cold temps (0- 15 deg. Farenheit).they work well for alpine skiing but would want a little more pliable material for touring or hiking. the material is very warm but not stretchy.

Great besides being too big...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I had been researching for some good baselayers to take backpacking and finally decided on the Patagonia Capilene 3. Luckily, Backcountry has awesome sales :) I bought both the top and the bottoms, size large. I'm 5'8 and 135lbs. so, I thought that the large slim fit would be good. The top was great, but the bottoms fit a little baggy. So, they're comfy and long enough, just loose.

Big fan

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Great for the colder days in the mountains. Layer nicely under all different kinds of pants. My only gripe is that they don't always stay on my waist (get a little saggy through the day), so I have to make adjustments as the day goes on. Not a big deal though.

Great baselayer. Lightweight and wicks well. Keeps me warm on long days on the slopes

Good Stuff

  • Fit: True to size

These thermals are pretty toast and wick moisture well. The only down side is there isn't a ton of stretch to the fabric.

Almost perfect

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm always cold so I may be a bit biased, but I ski in the Northern Rockies where it is bitterly cold some days and these have done an amazing job keeping me warm. I still feel the cold on my butt though when I'm on the chair lift. That's my only gripe

Saved my girlfriend's and my vacation

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Purchased a pair of these for my girlfriend who I just took skiing for the first time... She was on the bunny slopes at Sugarbush VT for 3 days all in the single digit temps and she was warm every day, she wore only these under a pair of north face insulated ski pants. These suckers are warm and wick away moisture to keep you warm even as you work hard and sweat... If it wasnt for these pants she def would of froze and then that would have wrecked my vacation as having a cold and soggy GF translates to me having a headache and not being on the slopes to enjoy the day, thanks for saving me Patagonia!!!

very soft and comfy

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

these are a great baselayer, keep me very warm when id normally feel goosebumps. also attractive enough to wear as a lounge pant at home. im 5'8" 123 lbs, got the xs. tiny bit short in the ankles but not a bad thing really.

Sexy & Comfy

Usually I am not one to think long underwear look 'sexy'. They typically do the job with keeping you warm & dry. But if you are like me and ski your legs into the ground, then you are usually sweating and hot come 4 o'clock. I hate packing too much in my bag and usually just strip down to the ole long underwear for apre ski. Ya I know I'm 'that girl.'I like these long underwear because they are functional, the seams don't dig into your waist and they look good when your ski pants come off! Hopefully this helped.(I'm not in the long underwear in this picture. I just like adding pictures)

Not Impressed

I will say, these are certainly warm, and they're still thin enough to wear under a (loose) pair of pants. However, they have very little stretch to them, so if you're feeling particularly acrobatic, you may be a bit confined. They are only just barely long enough, technically reaching my ankles, though I would prefer them a little longer. I've worn them running and they do just fine, but I have yet to try them in truly inclement weather.

Patagonia Capaline 3 Baselayer

These are very comfortable and run fairly true to size. They are easy to layer over and keep you warm and comfortable, and the waist band and seams don't cut into your skin which is always a plus.

Holds the junk in trunk nice

Was bought to accompany the Patagonia Capilene 3 midweight crew top for thermals for Everest basecamp trek in winter. Fits well and is comfortable.

What do the capilene numbers (1,2,3,4...) mean?

Best Answer Responded on

They're relative measures of warmth, only relevant for measurement against each other. The Capilene 1 is a thin wicking layer built for keeping you cool on warm days, while the Capilene 4 is a heavyweight fleece baselayer for slow moving or stop and go cold weather pursuits.

This layer, the Cap 3, will be good for high activity in bitter cold, or more leisurely activity in cool weather.
